An Austrian success story
It was more than fi ve decades ago that the motorcycle manufacturer
KTM, run by founder Hans Trunkenpolz, presented the Moser-KTM R 100,
the fi rst lightweight motorcycle of a long line from the Alps.
Eine tolle österreichische Erfolgsstory
Mehr als fünf Jahrzehnte ist es her, dass der Motorradhersteller KTM unter der Regie von Firmengründer
Hans Trunkenpolz mit der Moser-KTM R 100 das erste Leichtmotorrad einer langen
Ahnenreihe von Motorrädern aus dem Alpenland präsentierte.
On March 15 th , 1953, at fi ve o’clock in the morning,
three prototypes of the KTM R 100 lightweight motorcycle
were prepared for shipping to the spring
trade fair in Vienna. Thus the KTM name fi rst became
known to the public as a new Austrian motorcycle brand!
Hans Trunkenpolz, who did not see a great future in the
manufacture of spare parts, was looking for a new fi eld, and
motorcycles seemed to be the best choice. At that time, Austria
was a poor country divided into four occupied zones,
there was great demand for simple, inexpensive and robust
motorcycles to make its citizens mobile again.
In the early 1950s, motorcycle manufacturing in Austria
consisted of the brands Puch, RWC (Radwerke St Christophen,
Tresnak & Co.), Delta Gnom and Lohner in addition
to a few smaller companies. Lohner built motor scooters,
and only Puch offered motorcycles with engines larger than
125 cc. The most serious diffi culty facing them all was obtaining
suitable engines, and everyone went to Rotax in
Gunskirchen, Upper Austria, with the exception of Puch,
which built its own.
BRP-Rotax, now part of Bombardier Recreational Products
Inc., is currently an international market leader in the
development and manufacture of modern two- and fourstroke
engines for recreational vehicles such as the Ski-Doo
and Lynx snow sleds, Can-Am all-terrain vehicles and quads,
Sea-Doo watercraft and sport boats, motor scooters, motorcycles,
karts, and lightweight and ultralight planes.
In 1954, three models of lightweight motorcycles, the
Standard, Luxus and Tourist, had already been included in
KTM’s product line, and production of the company’s
1,000th motorcycle, a KTM Tourist, was celebrated in Mattighofen.
One year later came the company’s offi cial entry
into motorcycle racing, and in 1957 the successful Mecky
was launched, the world’s fi rst moped.
Bis 1947 hatte sich die Firma Trunkenpolz zu einer der
größten Reparaturwerkstätten Österreichs entwickelt.
Am 15. März 1953 um fünf Uhr früh wurden drei Prototypen
des Leichtmotorrades KTM R 100 zum Versand zur
Wiener Frühjahrsmesse gebracht. Der Name KTM als neue
österreichische Motorradmarke trat erstmals in der Öffentlichkeit
auf!
Hans Trunkenpolz gab der industriellen Ersatzteilfertigung
keine große Zukunftschance, suchte nach einem neuen
Produktionszweig, und da drängte sich das Produkt „Motorrad“
förmlich auf. Im damaligen armen und in vier
Besatzungszonen geteilten Österreich bestand ein sehr großer
Bedarf an einfachen, billigen und robusten Motorrädern,
um die Österreicher wieder mobil zu machen.
Die österreichische Motorradproduktion bestand zu Beginn
der 50er Jahre aus den Marken Puch, RWC (Radwerke
St. Christophen, Tresnak & Co.), Delta Gnom und Lohner
sowie einigen Kleinherstellern. Lohner baute Motorroller,
und nur Puch hatte Motorräder mit mehr als 125 cm 3 im
Programm. Das gravierende Problem für alle Hersteller bestand
im Bezug eines Motors, der bei allen mit Ausnahme
der Firma Puch, die ja eigene Motoren baute, über Rotax in
Gunskirchen (Oberösterreich) erfolgte. Heute ist BRP-Rotax
als Unternehmen der Bombardier Recreational Products Inc.
internationaler Marktführer in der Entwicklung und Herstellung
moderner 2- und 4-Takt Motoren für motorisierte
Freizeitgeräte wie Ski-Doo und Lynx Schneeschlitten, Can-

Karts sowie Leicht- und Ultraleichtfl ugzeuge.
1954 waren bereits drei Modelle des Leichtmotorrades
mit den Typenbezeichnungen Standard, Luxus und Tourist
im Programm von KTM, und in Mattighofen wurde die Herstellung
des 1.000 Motorrades gefeiert, einer KTM Tourist.
