Studio H&S Films by Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann
The “Studio for Political Documentaries” H&S located in Berlin Mitte was economically independent of the
DEFA-Studio (except 1982-1986). Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann worked exclusively together for
almost three decades; their individual talents complemented one another; Heynowski and Scheumann found
their topics in the dramatic changes in the 20th century. Their unmistakeable stylistic devices were emotionalization,
exposure, pictographic transmission of insights via contrastive montages and the use of historic film material.
H&S documentaries were exceptionally well received for the genre. Shown in more than 75 countries, they
belonged to the GDR productions that were famous abroad without giving insights about life in the GDR.
