Der erste filmische Rückblick nach
dem Fall der Mauer sollte und durfte
kein „Abgesang auf die DDR“ (W.
Junge) werden. Den passenden Rahmen
für ein Wiedersehen bot der Tag
der Deutschen Einheit 1991.
Einzelporträts der „Kinder von Golzow“
beschreiben die Gedanken und
Gefühle in der neuen Lebenssituation,
nach dem Ende der DDR.
Geschichte und ihre Auswirkung auf
den Menschen wird in diesen sehr
persönlichen Filmen nachvollziehbar.
Im ersten Golzow-Film nach der Vereinigung
zeigen Barbara und Winfried
Junge, wie sich die Welt „ihrer
Kinder von Golzow“ verändert. Ein
auch selbstkritischer Film mit zahlreichen
Szenen, die vor 1989 unmöglich
gewesen wären.
Nach den „Lebensläufen“ (1980/ Berlinale
1982), ist „Drehbuch: Die Zeiten“
der erste Golzow-Film, der auf
den Internationalen Filmfestspielen
Berlin in der Sektion „Forum“ zu
sehen ist. Ab nun wird jeder folgende
Golzow-Film auf der Berlinale vorgestellt
und erfüllt auf zahlreichen Festivals
– vor allem im westlichen Ausland
– eine einzigartige Brückenfunktion
zur Übermittlung von Befindlichkeiten,
Schicksalen, Hoffnungen und
Gedanken von Menschen, die im Zentrum
des gesellschaftlichen Wandels
Ende vorigen Jahrhunderts standen.
Wie schnell die „Kinder von Golzow“
in der neuen Zeit angekommen sind,
zeigt ein Blick auf die Förderer und
den Produzenten dieses Films: Der
angesehene bayrische Dokumentarfilmproduzent
Klaus Volkenborn. Das
Interesse beim westlichen Nachbarn
Frankreich war so groß, dass der TV-
Sender „La Sept“ die Fortsetzung der
ostdeutschen Biografiensammlung
unterstützte.
The first cinematic review after the
Fall of the Wall should not and must
not be a “swan song for the GDR” (W.
Junge). Occasion for a reunion was
the Germen Unification Day in 1991.
Portraits of the “Children of Golzow”
describe thoughts and feelings in the
new life situation after the end of
GDR. History and its effects on people
involved become comprehensible
in these very personal films.
In the first Golzow film after the unification,
Winfried and Barbara Junge
show how the world of “their Children
of Golzow” is changing. A selfreflecting
film with numerous scenes
that would have been impossible
before 1989.
After “Biographies” (1980), “Screenplay:
The Times” is the first Golzow
film that was shown at the Berlin
International Film Festival at the
Forum. From then on, every new Golzow
film was presented at the Berlin
International Film Festival and functions
at numerous festivals abroad,
especially in the Western world as a
bridge to convey feelings, fates, hopes
and thoughts of people who were in
the centre of the social changes at the
end of the last century.
When looking at the producer and
backers of the film, one sees how
fast the “Children of Golzow” arrived
in the new time: the distinguished
documentary producer Klaus Volkenborn
from Bavaria. There was so
much interest in the film in France,
that the TV channel “La Sept”
backed the sequel of the East German
biography collection.

Drei Frauen geben Auskunft über ihr
berufliches Engagement in der Textilfabrik
und ihren Rückzug ins Privatleben
in der kleinen Stadt. Der abendfüllende
Kompilationsfilm war als
Abschluss der Wittstock-Kurzfilmreihe
gedacht: Zehn Jahre hat Volker
Koepp die Arbeiterinnen des Trikotagenwerks
begleitet. Offen erzählen
sie von den Anlaufschwierigkeiten
des Betriebs, der hohen Fluktuation,
den Mängeln in der Führungsebene
und nicht zuletzt von ihren Träumen
und Wünschen. Nach der Veröffentlichung
der Tonbandprotokolle des
Three women talk about their commitment
at work in a textile factory
and about their withdrawal into private
life in the small town. The feature-length
compilation film was supposed
to be the ending of the Wittstock
short films: for ten years Volker
Koepp has been accompanying the
workers of the knit work factory.
They talk of the teething problems of
the business, of the high fluctuation,
of the deficiencies of the management
and, last but not least, of their
own dreams and hopes. After the
film’s tape protocols were published
in the FDJ magazine, the women
were observed.
die Gründung der DDR und
den ersten Fünfjahresplan im Juli
der Aufbau der Stahlindustrie. Kontrastierend
stehen dem Bilder aus
Arbeitslosigkeit, Elendsquartiere,
Westberlin und die Luftbrücke. So
wird auch der Kalte Krieg jener Jahre
The economical and cultural
improvements of the Soviet Occupied
Sector are documented with
scenes from the years 1945 to 1950.
The film deals with the land reform,
the foundation of the Socialist Single
Political Party, the expropriation of
war criminals, the foundation of the
GDR and the first five-year-plan in
July 1950. A special attention is dedicated
to the setup of the steel industry.
All this is shown in contrast to the
new Federal Republic of Germany,
where unemployment, slums and the
West Berlin airlift prevail. So the Cold
War of these years is reflected in the
film as a part of the development of
post war Germany.
In January 1945, the order from Berlin
still is: „believe, fight, win“. More
people die until capitulation than within
the previous five years. The last
128 days of the Second World War
are shown in this compilation film
containing previously unreleased
archive material – staggering images
that show the main battlefields of the
allies and thus correct the very common
idea in the GDR of the lone liberation
through the Soviet army. The
confession “We communists are
partly responsible for the course of
history because we couldn’t prevent
the takeover” was censored after the
intervention of some high officials of
GDR television.
„Ihr Völker der Welt. Schaut auf diese
Stadt“ – Damit macht der Westberliner
Oberbürgermeister Ernst
Reuter am 9. September 1948 auf das
Schicksal seiner Stadt aufmerksam.
Dieser viel zitierte Satz wird zum Titel
für einen Film über ein Westberlin
aus Sicht der DDR. Mit unverkennbarer
Ironie sagt nun Karl Gass:
„Schaut auf diese Stadt“ und zeigt
auf alte Reaktionäre, Militaristen und
westliche Spionagezentralen. Wer
den Zeitgeist des historisch bedeutenden
Jahres 1961 kennen lernen
will, der auf beiden Seiten mehr das
Kalte-Kriegs-Vokabular als sachliche
Argumente kannte, kann hier seine
Look Upon This City
1962 · 2327 m · 86 min. · b/w
Dir.: Karl Gass
„People of this world. Look upon this
City.“ Thus, Ernst Reuter, the West
Berlin mayor wanted to call attention
to the situation of his city on September
9th, 1948. This emotional phrase
– often repeated – was the basis for
Karl Gass’ film. It shows a different
West Berlin, the city from a GDR perspective.
Gass quotes “Look upon
this City” with irony. He shows us old
reactionaries, militarists and western
spy headquarters, all of which
made Berlin their home town. If you
want to know more about the spirit of
the year 1961 that heard more Cold
War vocabulary than sober arguments,
this film will show you the
East German point of view.
Henselmann, a city person, defender
of the industrial construction
method, describes his relationship to
power. His long artistic development
reminds one of episodes of German
history: from the Villa Kenvin close to
Montreux that established his architectural
reputation, to the television
tower in Berlin and the high-rise for
Leipzig University. The 80-year-old
architect talks in a moody, sometimes
cheerful way, but also combatively
and occasionally supported by
his wife, an instructive and amusing
witness of contemporary history.
An exact and atmospheric documentary
Western sectors and the Eastern
Hager, Vener and Honecker considered
the representation of the Hansa
too “neutral”, the commentary on
West Berlin by Stephan Hermlin had
to be revised in its entirety – they
said the political concept of the film
had failed and the party’s role as a
mobilizing force was not shown clear
enough. The tone became gradually
harsher and the ideological confrontation
after a short period of “thaw”
can still easily be felt after half a century.
To Manuela
The film deals with one of the difficult
topics the leaders of the GDR actually
would have preferred to be left
untouched: the demolition of villages
in the brown coal area of central
Germany. Open cast mining pushed
into landscapes where once people
lived. Over several years, the director
observed boroughs south of Leipzig
and took an interest in the people
there and their fate. Without polemics,
the director shows the close
bonds the people, especially the
elder, have to their piece of land. But
the film also shows the way the
young people make themselves at
home in the newly built blocks of
flats. They enjoy the convenience
they did not know before. But still,
sadness and melancholy remain.
Ein unterhaltsames Roadmovie über
die Rockszene in der DDR. Dieter
Schumann und sein Team haben
Gruppen wie „Pankow“ und „Silly“
mit der Sängerin Tamara Danz, aber
auch unbekannte Bands auf ihren
Tourneen durch die DDR begleitet.
Alle Gruppen sind im Konzert zu
sehen, im Kontakt mit ihrem Publikum.
Regisseur Dieter Schumann
Organisation andere Interessen
stellt. Aufschlussreiche Einblicke
1988 · 35 mm · 3301 m · 120 min. · color
The entertaining road movie about
the rock scene in the GDR. Dieter
Schumann and his team accompanied
the tours of bands like “Pankow”
and “Silly” with the singer
Tamara Danz but also less known
bands. All the bands are seen during
their shows, interacting with their
audiences. The director Dieter Schumann
talks to the fans. They speak
about their desire to dress and to
move the way they want to, their
desire to disagree. And not to be
marked as subversive when they
have other interests than work and
the political organisation. Interesting
insights into the lives and feelings of
the young people.
Ernst Cantzler’s documentary about
the soccer fan club “Union”, the
scenes in the stadium, in their club bar.
Scenes like the ones from the football
stadium and the hooligan bar “Green
Hell” had not been seen before: young
football fans full of violence from the
“first German peaceful state”. The
documentary was a sensation because
the people shown are inconspicuous
young men. They talk about their
regular street fights as if they were a
natural part of every day life. Well
equipped teenagers from rival clubs
ally against the police. The filmmakers
with their microphone and
camera are right in the centre of the
explosive mixture of aggression, frustration
and boredom. The reason for
this collective violence is the sheer
zest for violence.
Leuchtkraft der Ziege –
Eine Naturerscheinung
1987 · 35 mm · 525 m · 19 min. · Farbe
Regie: Jochen Kraußer
Ein merkwürdiges Mobil fährt durch
eine Ackerlandschaft. Begegnung mit
einer scheinbar unendlich wandernden
Kindergartengruppe und einem
Amateurfilmer, der sein Werk dem
Publikum vorführt. Seine Zuschauer
hatten nie zuvor eine leuchtende Ziege
gesehen. Kraußer beobachtet Laienkünstler,
eine Amateurfilmgruppe,
und führt zugleich die offizielle Kunstdoktrin
auf vergnügliche Weise ad
absurdum. In Kraußers Arbeiten stößt
man auf Individuen. Sein groteskes
opus magnum ist bis heute ein Kultfilm
in Filmclubs. Was mit „Leuchtkraft
der Ziege – Eine Naturerscheinung“
auf die Leinwand kam, befreite
für 20 Minuten von Kleingeistigkeit
und Zwang. Dazu trugen vor allem die
Montage und eine Kamera der ungewöhnlichen
Blickwinkel bei.
The Goat’s Intensity
1987 · 35 mm · 525 m · 19 min. · color
Dir.: Jochen Kraußer
A strange vehicle is driving through
fields. An encounter with kindergarten
children who seem to be wandering
endlessly and an amateur film
maker presenting his work to the
audience. The viewers had never
seen a glowing goat before. Kraußer
observes amateur artists, a group of
film makers, and makes fun of the
official art doctrine at the same time.
In Kraußer’s works you always get to
meet individuals. The grotesque opus
magnum has kept its status as a cult
film in the film clubs until today.
When watching “The Goat’s Intensity”
on screen one was delivered
from narrow mindedness and pressure
and unusual perspectives of the
camera contributed to it.
literature, music and architecture.
He shows the protagonists point
of view on themes like birth, childhood,
growing-up, love, hate, joy and
sorrow and resurrection. The artistic
universal genius Ernst Fuchs, at the
age of 73, considers life as a process
of playful creation. He opposes the
things he already knows and starts
searching for the truth. The film is a
portrayal of the leading representative
of the “Vienna School of Fantastic
Realism” at the places of his life and
work.
Studio H&S Films by Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann
The “Studio for Political Documentaries” H&S located in Berlin Mitte was economically independent of the
DEFA-Studio (except 1982-1986). Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann worked exclusively together for
almost three decades; their individual talents complemented one another; Heynowski and Scheumann found
their topics in the dramatic changes in the 20th century. Their unmistakeable stylistic devices were emotionalization,
exposure, pictographic transmission of insights via contrastive montages and the use of historic film material.
H&S documentaries were exceptionally well received for the genre. Shown in more than 75 countries, they
belonged to the GDR productions that were famous abroad without giving insights about life in the GDR.
