tells Apache to forward all HTTP requests with a .php suffix to be handled by Zend Core. On
Windows systems, the LoadModule would specify a DLL. But Unix systems use Shared Object
(SO) files, which brings up an important point: PHP runs in the System i PASE. Furthermore,
because PHP was designed for easy extensibility (with .so or .dll plug-ins), Zend Core can run
any PHP extension compiled for AIX.
PHP for i is available for free from Zend (zend.com). You can download it from Zend, but
it nevertheless has an IBM product number (5639-ZC1 Zend Core for i5/OS). There are also
two other IBM product numbers for Zend: 5639-ZS1 Zend Studio Professional for i5/OS and
5771-ZS1 Zend Studio Professional for i5/OS Support. Zend Studio is a PC-based IDE, and it,
too, is free for the System i. Figure 1 shows what the Zend Studio environment looks like. So
where is Zend expecting to make money? It’s counting on sales revenue from licensing support.
Note that Zend is the group that makes most of the enhancements to the open-source PHP server
(Zend Core). Zend has made a successful business out of providing commercial support for
PHP, and now it’s expanding its customer base to include System i.
