For a small country with a population of approximately eight million, Austria possesses
considerable exportable know-how in the field of health and medical technology.
at its Graz location over the next three years, and about 70
employees will be hired for this project exclusively.
Another technological leader is Otto Bock Healthcare
Products GmbH, which has moved to the top of the prosthetics
and rehabilitation sectors with products such as its C-
Leg, the world’s first microprocessor-controlled leg prosthesis,
and myoelectrical prostheses such as the Transcarpal
Hand and the Ergo Arm. In addition to production and sales,
research and development has made Vienna one of the company’s
most important locations, and approximately onefourth
of its 250 employees work in this sector. Currently,
high hopes are set on neural implants, electrodes connected
directly to human nerves for the purpose of registering and
influencing body functions. As a result, the function of certain
organs can be restored in the event of damage to the central
nervous system (from disease, stroke, etc.).
The company’s special challenge is developing implants
that draw information from a certain place in the biological
system, interpret it in a way similar to the body’s natural
information-processing system, and return the result to
nerve tissue in a suitable form by means of a biotechnical
contact. At present, about 20 different illnesses can be treated
by means of electrically stimulating the brain, the spinal
cord or the peripheral nervous system. In the past, implanted
electronic devices were unable to register nerve signals
from the nervous system – this will change thanks to neural
implants.
Ultrasound images now occupy a firm place in modern
medicine – and the Kretztechnik company has become the
