The biotechnology boom
Austria now has a successful biotech company which is quoted on
the stock exchange, Intercell. In the next five years, an additional 30
to 40 start-ups will be possible in this sector, and 10,000 new jobs by
the year 2015 have been predicted.
Over the next ten years, worldwide biotech sales will
triple at least. According to a conservative estimate
that means annual global sales of 500 billion euros
(150 billion at present) and almost a million new jobs.
Already this year, biotechnology products represent 20% of
the total pharmaceuticals market, and this share will double
at least by 2010.
There is no lack of internationally competitive projects
in Austria either. Proof of this fact are the results of the BOB
– Best of Biotech business-plan contest, which was followed
by a number of business start-ups. The focus was "red” biotechnology
(human and veterinary), for which annual
added value amounting to approximately 1.6 billion euros
by 2015 is forecast for the field of research. At the same
time, the new jobs in this segment alone will rise from the
present figure of about 300 to 2,500 by the same year. A
positive trend in employment statistics for all steps in the
value-addition process can also be expected. For example,
in the same time period, approximately 5,000 new development
jobs and 2,500 in both production and technical
services will be created.
A good overview of the situation in Austria was available
in mid-June at the world’s largest trade fare for biotechnology,
Philadelphia’s BIO. Companies represented at
Austria’s stand included Austrianova, Biotec Area Krems,
Eucodis, Greenhills Biotechnology, igeneon, Intercell,
Oridis, Sanochemia and the biotech working group Life
Science Austria. Since June 2002, the goal of LISA, as the
continuation of the successful Impulsprogramm Biotechnologie
innovation programme, has been to serve as a
clearinghouse for services, know-how and information; and
a communication-network node for potential business
founders in the life-science field (according to the one-stop
shopping principle). Within LISA, for example, progress

Mit der Intercell verfügt Österreich seit heuer über ein erfolgreiches
börsenotiertes Biotech-Unternehmen. In den nächsten
fünf Jahren sollen weitere 30 bis 40 Start-ups in diesem
Bereich ermöglicht werden, wobei bis zum Jahr 2015 bis zu
10.000 neue Arbeitsplätze prognostiziert werden.
In den nächsten zehn Jahren wird sich der Biotech-Umsatz
weltweit zumindest verdreifachen. In Zahlen ausgedrückt
bedeutet das einen globalen Jahresumsatz von konservativ
geschätzt 500 Milliarden (statt derzeit etwa 150
Milliarden) Euro und rund eine Million neue Arbeitsplätze.
Bereits heute halten biotechnologische Produkte 20 Prozent
am Gesamtpharmamarkt, dieser Anteil wird sich bis 2010
zumindest verdoppeln.
An international konkurrenzfähigen Projekten mangelt
es in Österreich nicht. Ein guter Beweis dafür sind die
Resultate des Businessplan-Wettbewerbs „BOB – Best of
Biotech“, dem zahlreiche Unternehmensgründungen folgten.
Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der „roten“ = humanund
veterinärmedizinischen Biotechnologie, wofür eine
jährliche Wertschöpfung in der Forschung von rund 1,6
Milliarden Euro bis 2015 vorausgesagt wird. Gleichzeitig
werden die Arbeitsplätze allein in diesem Biotechnologiesegment
von derzeit zirka 300 auf 2500 im Jahr 2015
anwachsen. Eine positive Beschäftigungsentwicklung bei
vor- und nachgelagerten Wertschöpfungsschritten ist ebenfalls
zu erwarten: So könnten im selben Zeitraum rund 5000
neue Arbeitsplätze in der Entwicklung und jeweils 2500 in
der Produktion und in der technischen Dienstleistung
geschaffen werden.
Einen guten aktuellen Überblick über die österreichische
„Szene“ bot Mitte Juni die weltweit größte Fachmesse für
Biotechnologie, die BIO in Philadelphia. Auf dem Österreichstand
präsentierten sich dabei u. a. Austrianova, die
Biotec Area Krems, Eucodis, Greenhills Biotechnology, igeneon,
Intercell, Oridis, Sanochemia und die Biotech-
Arbeitsgemeinschaft Life Science Austria. Die Zielsetzung
von LISA als Fortsetzung des erfolgreichen „Impulsprogramms
Biotechnologie“ besteht seit Juni 2002 darin, als
