nischen Energieministerium ins Leben gerufener, internationaler Hoch-
schulwettbewerb.
Especially noteworthy are studio projects, which are executed in cooperation with
a company and are connected to student competitions, as well projects, which
are actually being built, such as the two solar homes for the Solar Decathlons
2007 and 2009, and the Project “Velux Model Home 2020“.
The Solar Decathlon is a bi-annual international university competition, hosted
by the U.S. Department of Energy. Teams of 20 pre-qualified universities from
all around the world are faced with the challenge, to design and build a solar-
powered “Year 2015 prototype home”, transport it to Washington D.C., and
compete with each other in one-week building exhibit on the National Mall.
In 2007, the team from TU Darmstadt, lead by the ee-unit, was the first cen-
tral European university to compete, and straightaway won the competition. In
2009, our team traveled to Washington as the defending champion, and was
able to repeat the success with a new house, returning as the overall winner.
About 25 students participated in each of the Solar Decathlon projects, and
had the opportunity, not just to design a plus-energy home through all project
phases, but to build it with their own hands.
