7.5 Metacommunication<br />
This involves identifying the situation and moving from the<br />
level <strong>of</strong> direct discourse to the negotiation <strong>of</strong> the communication<br />
itself. Examples <strong>of</strong> this are establishing the use <strong>of</strong> forms<br />
<strong>of</strong> address, clarifying the terms to be used and discussing basic<br />
cultural standards (e.g. concepts <strong>of</strong> time and punctuality),<br />
to name but a few. The use <strong>of</strong> appropriate language in these<br />
situations has, to our knowledge, so far been neither a part<br />
<strong>of</strong> language training nor <strong>of</strong> most intercultural training.<br />
