Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen
„verteilten“ Antrieb, starkes Interesse hervorgerufen.
As an interdisciplinary research think tank, one of the
main objectives of Bauhaus Luftfahrt is to give food for
thought and discussion to key aviation stakeholders and
policy-makers. One suitable platform for this purpose
was last year’s International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA),
held at Schönefeld Airport. The concept of a new innercity
airport “CentAirStation” and the corresponding
regional aircraft “CityBird” was the central theme of
Bauhaus Luftfahrt’s appearance at ILA Berlin Air Show
2016.
This novel airport concept has been developed in
collaboration with the Glasgow School of Art and
addresses the European Commission’s Flightpath 2050
goal of shortening the travel time to four hours doorto-door
for 90 % of all inner-European travellers. The
result of the concept study is that through the vertical
arrangement of the airport operation passenger processes
can be reduced to 15 minutes from arrival at the
“CentAirStation” through to take-off and to 10 minutes
from landing to exiting the building.
However, also in other research areas, new
approaches have generated a high interest in academia
and industry. One publication of the Combined Cycle
engines was awarded the Best Paper Award of the
AIAA, and the concept of the Propulsive Fuselage has
generated a strong interest, not at least because of the
planned work of NASA on this “distributed propulsion”.
These topics show the success of the proven interdisciplinary
research work that provides important
impulses for key trends and developments in aviation
with scientifically founded results. The team is thus
making an important contribution to addressing the
challenges of air transport in 2040 and beyond.
We wish you, dear reader, a lot of fun reading our
research results on these and other exciting topics of
the year 2016.
