EXCURSION TO GENEVA
5th – 7th June 2011
Recently, the Human Rights
Council - situated in Geneva
- reviewed the human rights
situation in Austria. In doing
so the Human Rights Council
made more than 160 recommendations
for Austria. On this
occasion Prof. Roth and Prof.
Geistlinger planned the annual
excursion – which is always
organized in early summer – to
Geneva.
12 students from different countries
around the world namely from
Australia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic,
Germany, Iceland, Poland and
Slovakia participated in the excursion
to Geneva. We had the privilege
of being able to observe the
17th Session of the Human Rights
Council at the United Nations Offices.
During the first day, we heard
from many non- government organizations
who made claims of
human rights abuses by member
states. The reports included but
were not limited to:
• The regime in Bahrain using
unnecessary force to quash
protests, hearing a firsthand
account was disturbing and
powerful.
• The dubiousness of the Chinese
governments claims it
has improved its Freedom of
Speech legislation, with a discussion
on a New Zealand
journalist who has been missing
in China, suspected impri-
soned.
• The violent and degrading
treatment of Burmese migrants
and refugees working in the
textiles industry in Thailand.

The second day we were able
to observe a lengthy discussion
with Her Excellency Ms Marlene
Moses; the United Nations delegate
from Nauru, about the implementation
of civil rights legislation
preventing the discrimination
of gay, lesbian and transgender
people. Her Excellency discussed
the length of time in which such
legislation could comfortably be
worked into Nauru law and was
quite inspiring in her ability to
aptly answer all questions which
were asked of her.
We had the opportunity to speak
with Her Excellency after the meeting
had gone to a break. She was
delighted to hear that Austrian law
students were able to observe the
17th Session of the Human Rights
Council.
The opportunity and experience
of visiting the UN surpassed our
expectations and has inspired all
of us to pursue activities outside
of our university studies to help
those less fortunate and to promote
human rights and raise awareness
of the issues that many people
face. The excursion to Geneva
will live on in our memories long
after we have finished our studies.
Further, the mere chance of being
able to share these two days and
communicate with students from
many other countries and learn
about their legal systems, values,
culture and beliefs also added
another amazing dimension to this
experience.
We would like to thank both
Professor Roth and Professor
Geistlinger for providing us with
such an enriching experience.

2. Campusgespräche: „Soziale
Vernetzung vs. Datenschutz“
„Europe-v-Facbook.org“ ist all
jenen eine Begriff, die die Causa
Facebook in den letzten Monaten
verfolgt haben. Denn „E-v-F“ ist
eine Gruppe junger Wiener Studierender,
die es auf Facebook und
seinen Umgang mit datenschutzrechtlichen
Vorschriften abgesehen
haben.
Der Sprecher und Mitbegründer
dieser Gruppe, Max Schrems, ist gebürtiger
Salzburger und studiert Jus in
Wien. Er ist, seit er 22 Anzeigen gegen
Facebook formuliert hat, vielgefragt
und ständig unterwegs, um namhaften
Zeitungen und TV-Sendern
wie Die Zeit, Le Monde, CNN-TV,
Al-Jazeera, Standard, Presse und Co
Interviews zu geben. Umso mehr hat
es uns – die StV Juridicum und die
StV Computerwissenschaften – als
Veranstalter gefreut, Max Schrems
bei unserer zweiten Runder der Cam-

Jahnel, der uns, als Spezialist
für Datenschutzrecht, auch schon im
Vorjahr den nötigen fachlichen Input
zur Diskussion geliefert hat.
Wir durften uns großer Besucherzahlen
und reger Teilnahme an der
Diskussion erfreuen. Es waren Vertreter
des „Chaos Club Salzburg“
(Zweigstelle des CCC Stuttgart),
Professoren und hauptsächlich Studierende
anwesend. Nach offiziellem
Veranstaltungsschluss bestand die
Möglichkeit, bei einem Buffet offene
Fragen zu stellen. Max Schrems hat
uns noch mit seiner Anwesenheit
beim „Juridicum-Treff“ im Posthof geehrt.
