legendary 70-metre ski jump replaced three earlier,
much smaller jumps and attracted competitors from
across Switzerland and the world.
Huge applause and an abrupt end
The Swiss Championships were held in Andermatt three
times – in 1934, 1953 and 1966. Andreas Däscher landed
the longest ever jump by a Swiss skier, which came in at
69 metres. And there was huge public interest when a
foreign national team chose this location as its Olympics
training base in 1956 and set new records. However,
there was also a major problem. The Gotthard ski jump
was susceptible both to wind and to avalanches and had
to be rebuilt many times. Its final hour came in 1970
when its ramp was removed. Today, the landing area is
still a visible reminder of the cheering from back then.
«Der Dank betrifft die Wettkämpfer,
die den Namen Gotthard
hinausgetragen haben.»
“Our thanks go to the
competitors who spread the
word about Gotthard.”
