In the historic heart of Andermatt village, a colourful façade
draws the attention of passers-by. The lavish patrician house
dating from 1786 was once General Suworow’s main barracks.
Since 1991, it has been home to the Ursern Valley Museum. The
permanent exhibition focuses on the lives of the people of the
Ursern Valley at the start of the 19th century and features the
impressive grand parlour and numerous other exhibits. The
museum also covers the valley’s history and culture, the military
and the Alpine and mule-drivers’ way of life. There is a natural
history collection and an exhibition on the life of ski legend
Bernhard Russi. The ground floor is home to the museum’s special
exhibitions. The current exhibition “Bergeis – Strahlen der
Steinzeit” (Mountain Ice – Crystals from the Stone Age) has been
curated with the Institute “Cultures of the Alps” and delves
into the work of prehistoric crystal hunters. The retreating
glaciers have made the age-old finds accessible to archaeologists.
It is known that hunter-gatherers in the Valais and the Gotthard
region mined rock crystals, and the exhibition provides a
fascinating insight into this tradition.
