The building should still be recognisable
at 200 kph. Is there a risk of design
overtaking architecture?
Petersen: For us, no conflict exists between
the two – even in the design details, for
example, the bearing points. The Porsche
building has a wide-span, framed structure to
cope with the poor soil conditions. We
moulded the pillars into three-dimensional
symbols of power that give rise to a building
that looks as if it had been cast.
What goes on above this concrete base?
Hansen: To keep the interior free from supports,
we erected a lightweight prefabricated steel
structure.
Petersen: The steel frames support a homogeneous
metal skin. All of the openings are
integrated into the modularity of this envelope.
Closing them produces a continuous surface
like a relief.
The illuminated building also attracts
attention at night. What message is
intended here?
Petersen: Our idea was to use the gable
façades as screens, onto which images and
information could be projected. The glazed
façade then seems to dissolve, leaving the
Porsche product with a public presence.
Hansen: This also makes the area interesting
for outdoor events such as meetings, parties
and promotional events. This option was
developed from a basic concept put forward
by the client.

Was werden Ihre nächsten Projekte sein?
Petersen: Ein Fußballstadion für Union Berlin,
ein Verwaltungsgebäude in Marl und ein
innerstädtisches Einkaufszentrum in sensibler
Lage mit unmittelbaren historischen Bezügen.
Außerdem arbeiten wir gemeinsam mit der
TU Wien an einem Forschungsprojekt: leichte,
ein- bis zweigeschossige Gebäude aus Stahl
mit komplett elementierten Fassaden aus
Glas, Kunststoff oder anderen Materialien.
Welche Entwicklungen sehen Sie in der
Fassadenplanung?
Hansen: Es wird sicherlich einen starken
Innovationsschub geben – bei neuen ebenso
wie bei vorhandenen Materialien.
Petersen: Die Systeme müssen komplexer
werden, damit sich unterschiedliche Materialien
problemlos einsetzen lassen. Sie bekommen
dadurch eine ganz andere haptische
Qualität, einen höheren Abstraktionsgrad. Das
gilt nicht nur für Glas, auch für Kunststoff
oder pneumatische Konstruktionen, die man
im Sommer herausnehmen kann. Fassaden
sollten als System in Zukunft noch mehr
leisten, zugleich aber in ihrer Anwendbarkeit
einfacher werden.

You have a penchant for high-tech
forms and a technically precise, industrial
language of materials. What other
projects are you working on?
Petersen: A football stadium for Union Berlin,
an administrative centre in Marl, and an inner
city shopping centre in a sensitive historic
location. We are also working with the
Technical University in Vienna on a research
project: a lightweight, one or two-storey
building in steel with modular façades made
of glass, PVC-U or other materials.
What developments do you foresee
in façade design?
Hansen: There will certainly be a lot of
impetus towards innovation utilising new
materials, and using existing materials in a
different way.
Petersen: The systems will have to become
more complex to facilitate the use of different
materials. This will make them feel quite
different and more abstract. This applies not
only to glass, but also to PVC-U products or
inflatable systems that can be removed in
summer. In future, façade systems will have
to do more yet also be simpler to use.
