WEIHNACHTS.ORATORIUM
(Christmas Oratorio), BWV 248
This work, which was given the title of'Oratorio'by
Bach himself, can be said to have a story-like nmative
flow, and is not a group of independent, successively
performed pieces. In fact, it is a set of six sequential
cantatas. The writing of the celebration of Christ,s bi.th
as a cantata series takes as a presupposition the fact that
Christmas is not an independent holiday but, like Japan-
ese New Year, a fixed period of celebration. That is.
Bach's Weihnachts-Orqtorium (Christmqs Oratorio) is
lruly a work on a grand scale which celebrates the whole
delightful season from rhe three days of Christmas
through New Year ro Epiphany (6th January).
The Christmas Orctorio rs one of the later works
among Bach's church music. The composition probably
took place in November and December 173,1. and the
work was first perfomed between 25th December of that
year md 6th January of the following year This was at
the time that Bach, taking a hiatus from his writing of
church cantatas (which he had produced over a number
of yers, beginning in 1723), had turned his energies towild
secular music, which he played with the Collegium
Musicum in Leipzig. However, based on the facts that in
1733 the Kyrie ancl Gloria of the MaJs in B minor \|erc
presented at the Sachsen court and that. after the CrriJF
mas Oratorio, Bach produced a succession of funher
works
'oratorios'
entitled
(Eastet Oratorio, Ascension
Oratoio), it can be suggested that Bach was endeavouring
to break new ground in church music. This is
connected with his incrcased tendency in his later years
to mange pre-existing materials according to new, higher
concepts. Thus, in the Christmas Or?/oria. existins can_
lata choru\es and aria' are reanimated with neu Iexl\
and mediated by newly-composed recitatives and chor_
ales. The existing music was brilliantly vivid and abundantly
lydcal, and fomed a religious work well suited to
the celebration of Christ's nativity and the consideration
of its meaning.
Even in the autograph, the six cantatas comprisine
Lhe Chistmas Oratorio appear as separate manuscripts,
and musically, too. each one stands on jts own. But from
such points as the choice of so orgmic a base key as D
major and the juxtaposition of accounts of the nativity
from Luke 2 and Matthew 2 (different tiom the readings
appointed for the church). we know that Bach conceived
of all six parts as one combined work. The naffation of
the nativity story is entrusted to the tenor, in the r6le of
Evangelist, and other characters such as angels. Herod
and shepherds also apper. Although Mary does not speat
directly, her supposed words and thoughts are taken as
the text of an alto solo in ftee verse.
The libretto is attributed to picander, the author of
the St. Matthew Passion text. Picander probably con-
fered with Bach in producing skilful parodies of exist_
ing cantatas. Parts I 4 incorporate music that originated
as BWV213 (The Choice of Her.zles) and BWV214
(Tdnet, ihr Pquken, erschqllet, h.ompetery, securar can-
tatas produced in 1733 for the Sachsen court. part 6, too,
contarns almost in its enthety a lost church cantata.
For the first perfomance. the new sections produced
by Bach included the music for the biblical narrative,
chorales, and the redtatiro a.compagnato parts. These
are vuied pieces written with a mature technique, and
among them, the ftee union of chomle and recitative is
notable. Other new music included the sinfonia in pat 2
and the alto aria in Pan 3 (No.3l), and also perhaps rhe
openrng chorus of Part 5. The first pedomance was at
both the Nikolaikirche md rhe Thomaskirche: Bach went
back and forth with his choir between these two matn
churches of Leipzig. It appears that other perfomances
took place in l'13914O. t744/45 and t'l45/46.

Christmas DaY (25th Dercmber)
On this day in 173'1. it was performed in the morning
during sewices at the Nikolaikirche and in the atiemoon
at the Thomaskirche. Beginning with a chorus sparkling
with joy, the nanative unfolds throughout the subsequent
movements with Joseph and Mary s anival in Belhlehen
and the birth of Jesus in the stable. The orchestration
here calls for 3 trumpets, timpani.2 flutes' 2-oboes' 2
of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem. The time for Marl"s
Verse l3 of Luther's Christmas chorale Vom Himmel
Itotlt, tla komm ich her (From Hearen high to eafth I
ronre. 1535) describes a plea that our hearts nay be a
bed for Jesus. The trumpets and timpani' as if evoking an
irnage of the host of angels, frame each half of the chor-
ale.
PART II
Und es waren Hirten in derselben Gegend
(And there [ere in the same country shepherds abiding)
Sccrttd Du,- of Chrislnds (26th Dercnlb'r)
Part 2 was perfomed al the Thomaskirche in the moming'
and at the Nikolaikirche in the aftemoon The theme is
{he angel's announcement to the shepherds camped with
their fl"ocks in the lield (Luke 2: 8-1 l): the angels' rvords
a pastoral drama with a caln flavour. The orchestration
is for 2 flutes.2 oboes d'amore.2 oboes da caccia,
stnngs and continuo.
No. l0: Sinfonia (G major I 2/8)
This is the only instrumental piece contained in any of
the six parts of the work. The pastorale in l2l8 time has
appeared in Christmas music since ancient times. The
distance between lightly moving lines for llutes and
violins and the melody of the group of oboes (the fomer
representing the music of the angels, the latter that of the
:hepherds r gradually shrjnks as the mu\ic propre\se\.
No. l1: Recitative (Evangelist)
The Evangelist describes the scene of the shepherds in
the lields and rhe glory of God shining in the sky. Here a
pattem appeils in the continuo which vividly describes
the descent of the angel.
No.12: Chorale (c majo\ 414)
As if impatienrly waiting for the Evangelist to end, rhe
chorus enters with verse 9 of Johann Rist,s Christmas
chorale Ermuntre dich, nein scha,d(.her Geist (Hq|e
courage, mt" b'eak soul, 1611). The resulr is as refteshing
as the light ofdawn.
No. l3: Recitativ€ (Evangetisr. Angel)
The angel (soprano) reils the shephefds: .Fear not: today
in David's city the Saviour has been bom.'
No. 14: Recitative (Bass)
The bass telis that whar has come to pass fulfils the OId
Te.tament covenant. The group o[ obues rccompanies.
No.15: Aria (Tenor, E minor, 3/8)
This tenor aria speaks to the shepherds, telling them to
hurry to see the child. The continuo reflects lighr and
quick running steps, and a flute solo and the tenor develop
a skilful interaction. This movement parodies BWV2l4.
No.5.
No. l6: Recitative (Evangelisr)
Continuing on from No.13 with the words of the angel,
the Evangelist nanates the sign to the shepherds: a baby
lying in a manger
No. l7: Chorale (C major, .f4)
Verse 8 of Paul Gerhardr's Christmas chorale Scrdrr,
schdut, v,us ist fir Wunder dar (Look, look, '|hqt is this
niracle. 1667) gives a vivid preview of the appearance
of the infant.
No. l8: Recitatiye (Bass)
The bass enjoins the shepherds to go where the child is
to sing him lullabies. The rocking pattern of a cradle
appears in the continuo.
No.19: Aria (Alro, c major. 2/4)
The setting for this aria is the scene in the stable, where a
lullaby soothes the hean. Throughout. the flute accompanies
an octave above the voice: perhaps this is meant to
symbolize angelic support lbr rhe singing Mary.
No. 20: Recitative (Evangelist)
As the angel finishes speaking, the sky nlls wirh rhe
hosts of heaven. and the praises of God begin.
No.2l: Chorus (G major, 2/2)
'Glory
to God in the highest, and peace on earth., This
lively and magnificent chorus encompasses three parls:
the glory of cod, rhe eanh s peace, and the joy of maD_
kind. lt is the largest of the pieces composed especially
for the Christmas Oranrio.
No.22: Recitatiye
(Bass)
The bass calls everyone to raise voices and sing with the
angels. ln the autograph we can see fhat a partial score
has been erased and then a new manuscript with contlnuo
accompaniment
only was written.
No.23: Chorale (G rnajor, t2l8)
Now. a chorus ol the taithful sings with strong voiccs'
naming) was premiCred in the moming al the Thomas-
kirche and in rhe afiemoon al the Nikolaikirche. It is rhe
only pail set in a flat key (the kev of F major.). and two
horns are also used. giving part.l a new and distinct
sound and character The orchest.ation is tbr 2 horns.2
obocs, stilngs and continuo.
No.36i Chorus (F major. 3/8)
The clear tone of the homs announces a new character.
which i! suitable to the beginning of the seconcl half of
lhe oratorio. The movenrent is a parody of the opening
chorus of BWV 2 l3 . Lasst unt sorgen (Let us sorrou:).
No. 37: Recitative (Evangelist)
The day ol the circumcision has come and. according 10
the angel'! u ords, the child is named Jesus. The nante of
Jesus is broughr parricularly to the ear by rhe high A
upon u,hich ir is sung.
No.38: Recitatire and Chorale (Bass and Soprano)
The nativit! is none other than the accomplishment of
the words from the book of Isaiah: 'Behold. a virgin
shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name
Emmanuel . Thus the consideration of rhe Name begins
with 'Emmanuel' (which means 'God wilh us ), and
moves on to the question of what Jesus ls to us. Arouncl
this twines the second half of verse I of Johann Rist's
1642 chorale of longing fbr Jesus./cr!. du mein liebstes
Leben (.lesus, Thou nl beloted 111t,); when the text
reaches the Passion on the cross, the bass tums to thoughts
of his own dearh. In rhat time. especially, rhe name of
Jesus has power to protect.
No.39: Aria (Soprano rvith Echo. C nrajor. 6/8)
This echo aria is based on BWV2t3. No.5. Although rhe
origiltal piece featured Hercules calling to the echo. here
it has become the soprano calling to the Saviour. Two
soprano voices in dialogue from diflerent dimensions
tinally.join in a beautiful duet on the worcl ./d (ycJ).
\o.40: Recitative and Chorale (Bass and Soprano)
This chorale and recitative are woven togelher with
No. 38. Reflection on the name of Jesus brings still more
tervent joy.
No,41: Aria (Tenor, D minor.4/,1)
In this powerful aria (a parody of BWV2l3, No.7), rhe
tenor sings of his decision to live to praise the Lord's
glory. The competifion berwccn the tcnor ancl obbligato
instruments has the pouer ofa lirst-rate concerto pjece.
No.42: Chorate (F major. 3/4)
The final movemenl in Part.l uses verse l5 of Johann
Rist'\ Nes Year's chorale Hilf, IIerr.lesu, !olJ gelingen
(Help, Lrtrd.lesus, let sutceed,1642). Al this point. the
day of the circumcision and narning is associatecl with
the llrst day of the New year. 'I'he two horns retum. and
hem each line of the chorus rvith convrctron.
PART V
Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen
(Glory be sung to You, God)
Sunday after New Year's DaY
ln 1735 this Sunday fell on 2nd Jmuary, and Part 5 was
first perfomed dudng the moming seruice at the Niko-
laikirche. The theme is the fear and trepidation of King
Herod at the nativity (Matthew 2: l-6) Perhaps because
it is offered for a lesser feast day, the entire section is
written with a light structure, and considers Jesus as the
'light' against the darkless. The orchestration is for two
oboes d'amore, strings and continuo.
No.43: Chorus (A maior, 3/4)
Concerning lhi. choru\. marked Virace. two oppo'ing
views exist: some think it to be a parody of an unknown
piece, whereas some believe it to be original. Among the
six opening choruses of the oratorio, it is the most
nimble, and the texture changes freely between homophony
and polyphony.
No. 44: Recitative (Evangelist)
Taken from the Gospel of St. Matthew. this recitative
opens the story of the Wise Men from the east.
No.45: Chorus and Recitative (Alto, B minor. 4/4)
'Where is he that is bom King of the Jews?' As if interruptin8
the chorus of the Wise Men' the alto breaks in
with'Seek him in my breast'. This king' as the alto
explains, is none other than 'rhe light to lighten the
Gentiles'. This piece is a parody of a potion oi the St'
Mark Passiott (1131, now lost)
No.46: Chorale (A major, 4/4)
A hymn to the glory of Jesus, which changes darkness
into light; the brilliance of A major is overflowing The
chorale is verse 5 oi Geory Weissel's Nun, liebe Seel,
nuil ist es Zeit (Now, beloted soul nov is the tine'
t642).
ll
No.47: Aria (Bass, F sharp minor, 2/4)
The bass asks for that glory to enlighten him with its fire.
This piece is an adaptation of the soprano aria with liute
found as No.7 ofBWV215 (1734).
No. 48: Recitative (Evanselist)
Hearing the words of the Wise Men, King Herod and all
of Jerusalem are troubled.
No.'19: Recitative (Alto)
Th€ strings illustrate the trembling of the people. Scold-
ing them for their fear, the alto chuges them rather to
rejolce.
No. 50: Recitative (Evangelist)
Herod gathers the chief priests and scribes together to
take counsel. During the portion where they quote from
the book of Micah, the piece picks up into a more cheerful
Andante arioso.
No.5l: Trio (Sopmno, Alto and Tenor' B minor,2l4)
When will salvation come? - while the soprano and
tenor repeat this question, the alto interjects: hush! lt is
here! While the piece is probably a parody, the work on
which it is based is not known.
No.52: Recitative (Alto)
The aho proclaims that Jesus already rulesl His throne is
the heart.
No.53: Chorale (A major, 4/4)
The light of grace illuminates the dark cavern of the
beart, making it suitable to be a throne for the King
Among the linales of the six parts. this is the simplest
four-part arrangement. The chorale is verse 9 of lir
Gestin, ihr hohlen Li)fte (Ye stars' ve hollov' winds,
1655) by Johann Frmck.
PART VI
Herr, wenn die stolzen Feinde schnauben
(Lord, when the proud enemies snort with rage)
E p i p hany ( 6r h.Iarwarl- )
Written for 6th January, rhe Feast of rhe Epiphany, rhis
section was premidred at the Thomaskirche in the moming
and at the Nikolaikirche in rhe aftemoon. The theme
is the visit of the Wise Men from the east, following the
star (Matthew 2: 7-12). Of the eleven pieces. if we re-
move the Gospel text recitatives and the chorales, the
rcmarnlng seven are believed to be anangements of the
movements of the lost canrata BWV 248/VIa ( 1734). D
major makes its appearance a third time, and the trumpets
and timpani roo return. The orchestration calls for 3
trumpets. timpani,2 oboes,2 oboes d'amore, strings and
continuo.
No.5,l: Chorus (D major, 3/8)
Matching the opening choruses of Parts I and 3, this
movement too has a dance rhythm in triple time. En_
thusiastically, it asks for the power of the Lord as help in
the struggle. The brilliant rejoicing of the first half of rhe
oratollo retums herc.
No.55: R€citative (Evangelist. Herod)
Herod (the bass) summons the Wise Men, and sends
ihem to Bethlehem.
No.56: Recitative (Soprano)
The soprano, hearing Herod's words: 'I too will go to
worship him', says rhat the Lord sees through all deceit.
No.57; Aria (Soprano, Lar3o e stdccato, Amajo\ 311)
In the soprano aria which follows the recitative, the
peculiar effecr of 3/4 with a shifted accent exprcsses the
strength of the hand of the Lord. The altemation of strong
and weak produces an echo effect.
No. 58: Recitative (Evangelist)
The Wise Men depafi, following the star and, aniving at
their destination, they joyfully worship the child.
No.59; Chorale (G majo\414)
Verse I of Paul Gerhardt's nativity chorale I(h steh an
deiner Krippen hier (l stand here at tb, .radle.1656) is
sung. The content declares that we. too, stand by the
manBer and give praise.
No. 60r Recitatiye (Evangelist)
Following the waming they receive in a dream, the Wise
Men avoid Herod and retum home by a different roure.
No.61: Recitative (Tenor)
The continuo plays a figure evocarive of the walking feet
of the Wise Men: the tenor compares Jesus to a bridegroom,
and begins to tell of thoughts of love. This sort
of subject has been entrusted to the alto up to pan 5 but,
possibly due to the unavailability of the singer for Bach,s
first perfomance, here it is the tenor who takes the aria.
The dynanics and tempo are meticulously set out in the
accompmiment.
No. 62: Aria (Tenor, Vivat e, B mlno\ 214)
This ada has the same instrumentation as No.61. Triumphant,
the faithful now stand strong against the enemy.
No.63: Recitative (Soprano, Alto, Tenor Bass)
This is a four-voice recitative. The four soloists draw us
toward the last movement with imitative entries.
No.64: Chorale (D major. ,l/4)
Following a splendid introducrion, verse 4 of Georg
Wemer's Ihr Chisten auserkoren (You chosen Christians,
16.18) is sung with vigour. Taking the melody of a
Passion chorale, this chomle, which declres the victory
of Christ, reminds us thar the meaning of the narivity is
fulfilled in the Passion.
2 Oboen d'amore.2 Oboen da caccia, Streichern und
Continuo.
NL l0: Sinfonia (G-Dur, 12l8)
tlich, mein sthtather Geist (1611). Das Ergebnis ist erfrischend
wie das Licht der Morgendammerung.
Nn 13: Rezitativ (Evangelist, Engel)
Nr. l7: Choral (D-Dur, 4/4)
Die achte Strophe aus Paul Gerhardts Weihnachtschoral
St haut, schaut. \'as ist fiir Wunder dur ( 1667) vermittelt
ein lebendiges Bild des Kindes.
Nr. 18: Rezitativ (Bal3)
D ritter Wei hnac htsfe ie rtq g ( 2 7. D e zember )
Der dritte Teil wurde am dritten Weihnachtsfeiertag
w:ihrend des Morgengottesdienstes in der Nikolaikirche
aufgefiihfl.
Nr.2E: Choral (A-Dur, 4/,1)
Weihnachtschoral Frbhlith soll mein Her:e springcn
(1653) als Text.
Nr. 34: Rezitativ (Evangelist)
Die Hirten kehren wieder. Cott preisend.
Nr.35: Choral (fis-moll. 4/.1)
TEIL V
Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen
Ktinigs Herodes (Matthaius 2: I -6).
Heiden scheinen sollen" (sic!). Dieses Stiick ist eine Pa-
rodie eines Teils der Marirs P4JJlofi (1731, jetzt ver-
schollen).
Nr.46: Choral (A-Dur. 4/4)
Eine Hymne an Jesu Glanz, der die Finstemis in Licht
verwandelt: der Glanz des A-Dur ist strahlend. Der
Chorai ist die fiinfte Strophe von Georg Weissels Nur,
liebe Seel, nun isr es Zeit (1612).
Nr. tl7: Arie (BalJ. fis-moll. 2/4)

I'ouveflure du

diflerente.
No 30: Rdcitatif (Evangeliste)
QUATRIEME PARTIE
Le premierjanvier 1735, cette section,6crite pour le Jour
No 36: Chaur (fa majeur, 3/8)
No ,12: Choral (fa majeur. 3/4)
Herr Jesu, lass gelingen (A I'ttide, Seigneur Jl.rrr, /'risre
