The Future? A “big bang” of evolution<br />

Researchers believe bacteria hold keys for our future with regard to “clean energy”<br />

Dramatic progress has<br />

been made over the last<br />

decade understanding the<br />

fundamental reaction of<br />

photosynthesis that evolved<br />

in cyanobacteria 3.7 billion<br />

years ago. For the first time<br />

it used water molecules as<br />

a source of electrons to<br />

transport energy derived<br />

from sunlight, while converting<br />

carbon dioxide into<br />

oxygen. The light harvesting<br />

systems gave the<br />

bacteria their blue<br />

(“cyano”) colour, and<br />

paved the way for plants to<br />

evolve by “kidnapping” bacteria<br />

to provide their photosynthetic<br />

engines, and for<br />

animals by liberating oxygen<br />

for them to breathe, by<br />

splitting water molecules.<br />

For humans now there is the<br />

tantalising possibility of tweaking<br />

the photosynthetic reactions<br />

of cyanobacteria to pro-<br />

duce fuels we want such as hydrogen,<br />

alcohols or even hydrocarbons,<br />

rather than carbohydrates.<br />

Progress at the research<br />

level has been rapid,<br />

boosting prospects of harnessing<br />

photosynthesis not<br />

just for energy but also for<br />

manufacturing valuable compounds<br />

for the chemical and<br />

biotechnology industries.<br />

Large amounts of<br />

clean energy<br />

Such research is running on<br />

two tracks, one aimed at genetically<br />

engineering real<br />

plants and cyanobacteria to<br />

yield the products we want,<br />

and the other to mimic their<br />

processes in artificial photosynthetic<br />

systems built with<br />

human-made components.<br />

Both approaches hold great<br />

promise and will be pursued in<br />

parallel, as was discussed at a<br />

recent workshop organised by<br />

are capable of regenerating themselves, just as in real plants or cyanobacteria.<br />

agreement over the ability of<br />

photosynthesis to provide large<br />

amounts of clean energy in future.<br />

While the sustainable options<br />

currently pursued such<br />

as wind and tidal power will<br />

meet some requirements, they<br />

will not be able to replace fossil<br />

fuels as sources of solid energy<br />

for driving engines, nor<br />

are they likely to be capable<br />

on their own of generating<br />

enough electricity for the<br />

whole planet. There is the potential<br />

to develop dedicated<br />

systems, whether based on<br />

cyanobacteria, plants, or arti-<br />

des EBA umfasst Eisenbahnstrecken<br />

mit einem<br />

Verkehrsaufkommen von<br />

mehr als 60 000 Zügen pro<br />

Jahr. Für die Kartierung der<br />

mehr als 4600 Kilometer in<br />

Frage kommenden Eisenbahnstrecken<br />

wurden umfangreiche<br />

Datenbestände der<br />

DB Netz AG und der öffentlichenVermessungsverwaltungen<br />

auf Landes- und Bundesebene<br />

bearbeitet, harmonisiert<br />

und in ein akustisches<br />

Modell überführt. In die Be-<br />

ficial components, capable of<br />

much higher efficiencies than<br />

biofuel producing crops, reaching<br />

10 per cent efficiency of solar<br />

energy conversion. This<br />

would enable enough energy<br />

and fuel to be produced for a<br />

large part of the planet’s needs<br />

without causing significant<br />

loss of space for food production.<br />

über die Lärmsituation in ihrer<br />

Gemeinde zu informieren.<br />

Des Weiteren stehen statistische<br />

Informationen über die<br />

Anzahl der von Schienenlärm<br />

belasteten Personen zur Verfügung.<br />

Die Lärmkarten bilden<br />

auch die Grundlage <strong>für</strong><br />

Lärmaktionsplanungen der<br />

Kommunen. In einem nächsten<br />

Schritt wird das EBA die<br />

Lärmsituation in 27 Ballungsräumen<br />

durch die Kartierung<br />

komplettieren.<br />

Public Transport 41<br />

Increased mobility by rail and bus –<br />

public transport section expanded<br />

Environmentally friendly mobility is one of the main subjects at InnoTrans<br />

Mobility that is both environmentally<br />

friendly and<br />

suitable for meeting future<br />

needs forms one of the<br />

main themes of InnoTrans<br />

2008. It features all the<br />

various display areas of<br />

the International Trade<br />

Fair for Transport Technology,<br />

and especially the<br />

section devoted to Public<br />

Transport.<br />

There are some 260 exhibitors<br />

in this section, with products<br />

and services that are needbased<br />

and offer ecological benefits<br />

too. A higher proportion<br />

of exhibitors will be coming<br />

from abroad this year and they<br />

now account for some 50 per<br />

cent of the total. Increasing attention<br />

has been given to the<br />

subject of Public Transport in<br />

recent years, along with qualitative<br />

improvements and as a<br />

result it now constitutes an<br />

important, separate section at<br />

InnoTrans.<br />

Compared with other specialised<br />

events the Public<br />

Transport section at Inno-<br />

Trans is a world leader in its<br />

field. Covering an overall display<br />

area of 14,000 square metres,<br />

it is even larger than at<br />

the event two years ago. In addition<br />

to halls 2.1 and 4.1, hall<br />

6.1 will also be used by ex-<br />

hibitors in the Public Transport<br />

section for the first time.<br />

The expanded range of products<br />

and services now includes<br />

stationary installations,<br />

passenger information systems,<br />

fare management, information<br />

technologies, traffic<br />

management, communication,<br />

data processing, planning,<br />

consulting and engineering<br />

services, transport<br />

companies and much more.<br />

This year’s display will be augmented<br />

for the first time by a<br />

presentation of buses for use<br />

on local and regional services.<br />

New buses can be seen, for<br />

example, on an open air site<br />

between halls 2.1 and 4.1.<br />
