REPORT ON THE 30 TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE WORKING GROUP
“BENEFICIAL ARTHROPODS AND ENTOMOPATHOGENIC NEMATODES”
Dr. Annette Herz and Prof. Dr. Ralf-Udo Ehlers
The 30 th Annual Meeting of the Working Group “Beneficial Arthropods and
Entomopathogenic Nematodes” of DPG and DGaaE was held on the 29 th and 30 th of
November 2011 at the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, Campus Geisenheim. Prof.
Dr. Annette Reineke and her team from the Geisenheim Research Center, Department of
Phytomedicine arranged the event in a smooth and perfect manner, including an extraordinary
winetasting at the University’s wine cellar as highlight during the evening.
This year, the Working Group celebrated its 30 th anniversary and the first two talks addressed
the history of the working group as well as the history of the use of beneficials for biological
control – both are examples of true success stories! The other 14 presentations focused on
current problems in plant protection and perspectives to solve them with the help of beneficial
organisms. The scientific program included also a poster session where four posters were
shortly presented by their authors. Over 40 participants from research institutions,
universities, extension services and biocontrol companies attended the meeting and a part of
them also joined the subsequent “20 th of Workshop of Biological Control”, a meeting of
representatives of private and governmental extension services, biocontrol companies and
other practitioners. Thus, summa summarum, 50 years of successful biological control with
the help of beneficials!
Our next meeting will take place end of the year 2012. Exact date and venue will be
announced in due time. We would like to thank all contributors and especially those who
submitted their abstracts for publication.
30 YEARS WORKING GROUP “BENEFICIAL ARTHROPODS AND
It was in the year 1981 during the 43 rd German Congress of Plant Protection at Hamburg,
when three researchers launched the idea to establish a discussion forum for scientists and
practitioners engaged in basic and applied research on beneficial arthropods for use in
biological control. Said and done, the first meeting of the Working Group “Beneficial
arthropods” was held at the Institute for Biological Control in Darmstadt in April 1982 and
the “founder-trio” – Dr. G. Neuffer, Dr. S. A. Hassan and Dr. J. Schliesske – was elected as
management board by the audience. From the beginning, the working group was associated to
the DPG - Deutsche Phytomedizinische Gesellschaft e. V. (German Phytomedical Society r.
S.) and the DGaaE – Deutsche Gesellschaft für allgemeine und angewandte Entomologie
(German Society for General and Applied Entomology). The general goal was to bring the
application of beneficial arthropods into practice and to consider them as an important
component of integrated pest management. The scientific meetings were supposed to provide
a lively platform to exchange ideas, to discuss methodological issues and to involve especially
young scientists at the beginning of their career – still one of the leading ideas until today! In
subsequent years, the meetings were annually held at various locations, including universities,
governmental bodies and research institutions all over Germany – particular thanks to all
