e-mobility on demand: An integrated
Mobility Concept for the Future.
Despite rapid population growth and the
resulting challenges to the urban infra-
structure, Vienna needs a concept today
for the transport of the future in order to
remain a habitable, modern city. With the
regional model “e-mobility on demand”
the Vienna Public Utilities (Wiener Stadtwerke)
will be able to realise their vision of
a comprehensive, user-oriented electrical
mobility service for the Vienna area. This
should reduce private individual transport,
encourage changes in mobility behaviour
and lower pollution and noise pollution.
“Smart City-Vision”
The aim of the pilot project is to test new
elements of a diverse range of electric
mobility services. “We want to test technologies
and transport logistics chains in
Living Labs and to learn primarily from user
behaviour,” explains Dr. Michael Lichtenegger,
Managing Director of the Wiener
Stadtwerke E-Mobility GmbH. Basically,
the share of public transport should be increased
with electrical mobility established
not as an alternative but as an extension to
it. Already more journeys are made by public
transport (36 percent of all trips) than by
car (31 percent). The reason for this is the
excellent service offered by good public
transport. In the future innovative forms of
mobility will add to the backbone of public
transport to extend urban mobility. Following
the campaign slogan “Moving from
possession, to use” public and individual
transport should be intelligently integrated,
for example, by sharing schemes for electric
vehicles.
Information Hotspots
The most important tool for testing new mobility
systems are the mobility junctions or
“hot spots” with seamless modal transfer.
“A typical hot spot is the west railway terminus,”
said Lichtenegger. Here all the services
are bundled together: Intercity, regional
trains, underground, tram, bus, park & ride,
bike ride, car sharing, taxis and car rental
companies. In addition, further hotspots
will be implemented that demonstrate other
scenarios: for example, the connection with
university campuses, a Park & Ride facility,
residential areas with their specific mobility
needs and corporate fleets.
Intelligent Packages
Because Smart Mobility needs to deliver
seam free information to the customer
about his ideal mobility options, integrated
information channels and control systems
are being created for improved networking
of all services. The hotspots also provide
valuable data about expectations, needs
and challenges of the users. Based on this,
intelligent systems, such as the popular
real-time mobile app. “qando” can be
further developed to provide a comprehensive
information platform, connected
to local conventional control systems. The
ultimate goal is to develop and test a multimodal
“Smart Mobility Card” as a single
access, control, information and billing tool
for a comprehensive, variety rich mobility
package in the Vienna area. The travel card
will make the use of an e-bike or electric
car just as easy as the underground or bus
and will optimally integrate electric mobility
in to public transport.
