The Graz Region: Ideal factor conditions
for electric mobility.
In the model region Graz, there is focus
on systemic intelligent mobility solutions
that make both e-mobility use and public
transport more attractive. The promoters
of the project are Holding Graz, as the mobility
service provider, and Energie Graz
and Energie Stiermark (Styria) as energy
service providers. For Robert Schmied
DI, managing director of E-Mobility Graz
GmbH, the region is ideal for the practical
testing of electric mobility services: “On
a daily basis we have in the order of 50
percent of the Styrian population present
in the Graz area. This is due to strong
commuter behaviour into the city from
the surrounding metropolitan areas - from
about five to 20 kilometres distance.” A
particular asset of the model region, seen
by Schmied, is the variety of companies
and research institutions settled in the
Graz area, such as Magna or AVL, that are
intensely involved in the theme of electric
mobility.
Renewing the fleet
At the beginning of the project, the first
task has been to re-equip the electric
vehicle fleets of the sponsoring companies
in order to gain experience. By 2013/14,
up to 250 dual fuel electric vehicles will
be in regular use. Beyond this the fleets
of commercial enterprises of varying sizes
will be converted. In contrast, the focus
of a number of leasing and hire-initiatives
is on all electric vehicles: for example a
central hire point has been launched, for
communities and tourism organisations,
to book electric bicycles via the Internet
or telephone. A further initiative is already
underway for the combined use of e-bikes
and public transport.
Energy autonomy with photovoltaics
Special emphasis in the model region
is placed on the involvement of public
transport (where trams already contribute
to electrification) and the linking of
mobility services to form an environment
– transport pact. Energie Graz is making
renewable energy available to promote
the expansion of the project by installing
photovoltaic systems with an expected
output of more than 300 kWp. The largest
installation, with an area of 1,100 m2 and
output of 150 kWp, is located on the roof
of the Graz-bus garage. More recently a
PV system with 254 m2 has been commissioned
in the grounds of Graz airport.
Overall Energie Graz can currently
produce renewable energy for more than
a million car-kilometres and five million
e-bike kilometres.
A new type of Mobility behaviour
In order to establish electric mobility
across a broader user base personal travel
behaviour must change. “This only works
if the incentive is large enough,” explains
Schmied. “As long as the cost equation for
electric mobility is unattractive, it will remain
a niche market.” A further stated aim
of the model region is therefore to identify
promising approaches and mechanisms
for cost reduction of electric mobility offerings.
