Demonstration project VIBRATe: Electric
mobility region without borders.
The demonstration project VIBRATe - VI-
enna BRATislava E-mobility - is the first of
its kind in Central Europe for cross-border
cooperation in use of electric vehicles.
The Austrian power utilities VERBUND,
EVN and Wien Energie are the sponsors
and promoters, but they are also
members of the Austrian electric mobility
programme AMP (Austrian Mobile Power).
This ensures synergies and experience
with on-going e-mobility projects of AMP.
Involvement in this EU project from the
western Slovak side comes from the power
company Západoslovenská Energetika
and the specialist centre for renewable
energy sources and efficiency, Energetické
in Bratislava.
Model region as a paradigm
The electric mobility model region includes
the two closest capitals in the
world, Bratislava and Vienna, and the
region of Lower Austria situated in between.
“The Twin-City Vienna-Bratislava,
with just under three million inhabitants, is
an urban region that is perfect for electric
mobility applications,” as Wolfgang Pell DI
Mag, director of the VERBUND centre of
excellence for innovation, states enthusiastically.
As part of this a network of
charging stations is being built. In a twoyear
pilot period public convenience and
the practicality of electric vehicles in daily
traffic will be demonstrated. The potential

enna - Bratislava is at least 45 kg per year
for an average car with an electric motor,
compared to a combustion engine! For
the two-year trial period, 20 public organi-
sations and private companies have been
selected, each of which will receive an
electric vehicle for extensive use. These
first electric mobility “pioneers” include,
amongst others, the Technical University
of Vienna, Wiener Hilfswerk, Samaritans,
Federal Environmental Agency, ecoplus,
Bratislava Town Municipality, Bratislava
Self-Governing Region, Ministry of
Economy and Ministry of Agriculture and
Rural Development. Through a structured
evaluation process, the user experiences
gathered will be processed directly into
the implementation of infrastructure and
systems development.
Development of standardized
infrastructure for charging
To ensure barrier-free cross-border use,
charging stations for normal and rapid
charging will be installed with users and at
public and semi-public locations (e.g. customer
car parks at shopping centres). All
the sites will be visualized with the help of
a map tool on the project website (www.
emobility-vibrate.eu). Cross-border billing
and payment of the electricity consumed
by the user will also be tested. This will
include the identification of the vehicle at
the charging station and authorisation for
the charging procedure. With the creation
of a “green highway” between the two
metropolitan areas VIBRATe supports an
ecological connection between the two
neighbouring countries, thereby laying the
foundation stone for the transport of the
future.
