Smarter Mobility, Smarter Cities...
Smarter Planet!
How can I be certain that electric mobility
is available when I need it? - Who pays if
your car is charged at the place of work?
- How can the energy suppliers cover the
additional demand for sustainable energy?
These are questions that research, industry
and consumers alike are posing. In answer,
Michael Schramm MSc, Business Development
Executive at IBM Smarter Cities
Austria, suggests that “It requires intelligent
systems that go beyond technology and
infrastructure. That’s why we’re working to
make electric mobility a little bit smarter.“
Intelligent fleet management
IBM sees the greatest potential in electric
in the short term through car-pools, sharing
models and corporate fleets: Here the
switch to electric mobility is attractive due
to the high mileage. Intelligent control and
reservation systems should include parameters
such as battery charge level, location,
distance to destination, loading facilities
or idle times of individual vehicles. Thus,
the provision of each vehicle is optimised
per trip for the most appropriate logistical,
economic and ecological aspects.
As part of an EU initiative, IBM is also
working to develop and establish common
standards for electrical roaming that are
relevant in this context.
Optimisation of bidirectional
charging
Plug into a socket and the current flows! –
if uncontrolled peak demand and reliance
on CO -burdening forms of energy are to
2
be avoided, then electric cars cannot be
“filled up” as in the current mass market.
In the future smart charging strategies
and systems will allow charging at the
optimal time by taking account of factors
such as desired charge level, duration of
breaks in use of the vehicle, availability of
green electricity, avoiding peak consumption,
etc.. Conversely, the introduction
of electric cars in the mass market also
requires a significant level of electricity
storage capacity in the network. “We are
investigating how millions of electric vehicles
can be turned into mobile batteries’
to store overcapacity and feed it back into
the grid when needed,” says Schramm. In
the Edison Project, this scenario is already
a reality. The aim of the IBM simulation
project in Denmark is to optimise the combination
of wind energy and the charging
of electric cars and to synchronize with
the availability of wind energy.
The battery that breathes
As one of the challenges is the efficiency
of energy storage, the IBM laboratory
in Zurich is researching a new technology:
lithium-air batteries should achieve
five times the capacity of today’s models
and reach market maturity in four to five
years.
An interesting possibility for the future is
that entirely new business cases will apply:
If the battery is excluded from the purchase
of a car, then costs can be reduced
and as a result only battery capacity is
rented. Based on deposit guarantee systems
batteries could simply be replaced
against charged units at any time.
