Good prospects for the domestic
economy.
“Austrian companies need to invest in elec-
tric vehicles,” stresses Henrik Gommel DI
from Fraunhofer Austria Research, according
to the results of the recent study - Electric
mobility - Opportunities for the Austrian
Economy. “This way they can build new
skills at the start of market development, in
order to secure market share, take advantage
of additional employment potential
and achieve success in the medium to long
term.”
The 2011 study was conducted on behalf
of the Federal Ministry of Economy, Family
and Youth (BMWFJ), the Austria Chamber
of Commerce (WKO) and the commercial
partnership between of Fraunhofer Austria
and the Institute for Vehicle Drives &
Automotive Technology at the TU Vienna.
Five car-vehicle concepts were investigated
in terms of their economic impact: a
plug-in hybrid, a range extender vehicle, a
pure battery electric, a fuel cell vehicle and
a combustion-powered reference vehicle
– together with a charging infrastructure
system with intelligent charging management
for inclusion in future Smart Grids.
By assigning value added, based on the
standard classification of economic activity
(ÖNACE), against the development of two
future scenarios, the value added and employment
effects of the individual components
where assessed and evaluated in the
context of international competition.
70 percent growth possible
The results show that, in the period from
2010 to 2030, electric vehicles can increase
the directly obtained value added
of domestic automotive production and
employment by 70 percent. In the best
case, the direct value added potential of
electric mobility will reach approximately
1.2 billion Euros by 2030 with an electromobility-induced
employment potential of
23,800 full-time jobs. Companies mainly
in the mechanical engineering and electronics
sectors, as well as the metal and
electrical industries, stand to benefit most.
The study also shows good opportunity for
the established vehicle sector, because a
number of conventional technologies and
components will be used in electric-vehicle
concepts.
Component supply is particularly
promising
Austrian companies should put the focus
on multi-use components that can play a
role in all of the electric mobility vehicle
concepts. They should also capture opportunities
with two-wheeler and commercial
vehicles. Using these strategies a
significant impact on employment can be
achieved with low market risk. The largest
potential areas for Austria, that the study
was able to identify, are in the traction battery,
control and power electronics, electric
motor, bodywork and hydrogen tank.
“Hydrogen technologies promise great
impact, but are associated with a higher
risk because of the uncertain market development,”
suggests Gommel and recommends
careful planning. Key recommendations
of the study include consideration of
electric vehicles in all training programmes
and a clear focus on greater involvement in
international networks!
