Negativer Konjunktureinfluss
auf 450 US$/t.
in Kauf nehmen: Die durchschnittliche »Operating Rate«
Negative influences on economic activity
Early 2001 saw the beginning of the feared Uturn
in the wood pulp market. In the second half of
the year – instead of the expected recovery – there
was further decline in world prices from $ 710 per
ton for NBSK *) to $ 450 per ton. Towards the end of
the third quarter, prices stabilized at this low level.
A slight upward trend was identifiable at the end of
the year.
The reason, aside from the negative economic
conditions, was a gap between production capacity
and demand. Whereas capacity rose by 2.2 percent,
demand fell by 8 percent. In order to achieve a
degree of price stability we had to apply production
restrictions. The average operating rate worldwide
in 2001 was only 83 percent, 6 percentage points
lower than the previous year.
