I AM SAD TO REPORT, IT IS THE END OF
ANOTHER ERA ON HALIFAX’S SIGNATURE
STREET, YOUNG AVENUE.
In recent weeks, I’m told, grand old dame Eve
Wickwire has departed her longtime residence,
a couple doors down from Olands Castle, to
enter into a nursing home.
Eve is the widow of the legendary lawyer
F.B. “Ted” Wickwire, founding partner of what
is now Wickwire Holm. Ted, for whom the
Dalhousie Tigers football field is named, was
a shocking 52 when he died of cancer in 1991.
Previously married to Ted’s good friend and
Tory bagman Stu McInnes, with whom she
had two children, Eve was a charter member
of the South End establishment, and counted
among her best friends Bruce Oland’s twin
sister Amadita Stanbury, who died in August
2003.
Amadita also lived on Young Avenue directly
across from Eve, in a glorious old mansion torn
down by Navid Saberi in July 2007, to make
way for a row of his ugly and vile suburban
McMansions (Frank 567).
Earlier this year, Eve’s mother Jacqueline
Marie Smith (nee Dumaresq) died in
Northwood at 100. Jacque was the widow of
Lt. Col. Gordon Carrington Smith, who was
the senior surviving army officer aboard the

Sue and husband Brainard Fitzgerald declined
to comment.

I understand Ted’s sister, Jillian Pullen (who
is married to Hugh Pullen, of the distinguished
naval Pullens) hosted a number of private

that surrounds most of the third floor, and
was built on a lot listed at $129,000 with
Harbourside Realty in early 2009.
The odd-shaped, but not aesthetically
unpleasing, box-set is not unlike the couple’s
home on Elm Street in West End Halifax, and
shares traits with all Sue’s other designs, like
sharp lines, boxy rooms, big windows, and flat
roofs. Those probably aren’t technical terms.

Sandy is listing Eve’s house, 950 Young
