This electronic manual offers even more illustration galleries, chapter assignments, related projects, and discussion questions. It was developed to assist teachers in planning and implementing their instructional programs, not to replace the text. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The author is indebted to the many artists who contributed to Exploring Illustration. It would not have been the same book without their commitment and enthusiasm, priceless content assistance and, of course, superb illustration! Thanks must also be extended to those educators and professionals who consulted on the manuscript—your time and energy, wit and wisdom were invaluable. Thank you to family and friends for your care and support in general. Certain chapters and sections really reflect the wonderful interaction that embellished this project. Tom Garrett, Greg Nemec, Lori Osiecki, Robert Saunders, Akiko Stehrenberger, Ilene Winn-Lederer, and Robert Zimmerman collaborated on Chapter 1. Chapter 2 was also dialogued with Ilene, Robert Saunders, and Greg. Other key correspondents here were Melina Elum, Beth Holyoke, Margaret Parker, Paul Melia (also for Chapter 3), Stan Shaw, and Carla Steiger-Meister. Thanks to Ben Mahan, David Milgrim, and Tad Suzuki (also for Chapter 6), too. Greg, Akiko, and Robert Zimmerman contributed to Chapter 4, where a reference note is in order: Two books were particularly invaluable (and used extensively) to prepare this chapter. The first volume is The Illustrator in America (Watson-Guptill © 2001). Written by educator, writer, and illustrator Walt Reed, the third edition of this fine and important work was edited by Roger Reed, Walt’s son. The second is 200 Years of American Illustration, with text by Henry C. Pitz (Random House © 1977). Pitz was a reknowned illustrator, teacher, and historian. I bought this book when it was new. You might find some factual errors in this book, but it has been, and remains, a fine resource. Great thanks to Terry Brown and The Society of Illustrators, who came through with timely and crucial visuals for Chapter 4. Chapters 8 and 9 could not have been written without all the featured illustrators.
