MURPHY’S LAW
In thinking about what to say in the introduction to this book, I realized that (at the risk of
being cute) I wanted to discuss a guy I share my studio with—a cat named Murphy. Murphy
lives his art, and fulfills his job contract every minute; he is learning in the field, and
strives diligently to be exactly who he is.
And who exactly is Murphy? Murphy is a ball of energy, but he understands the vital importance
of rest—the “Murph” makes sleep look absolutely wonderful. He makes mistakes,
but bounces back instantaneously. Murphy jumps at opportunity; when a door is
open to him, he goes for it.
Murphy takes his recreation quite seriously. The boy spends long hours in the studio, but
gets away from the drawing board (going outside the house, as well) at every opportunity.
Murph instinctively knows how to play hard and well. A very sweet guy with great
people skills, Murphy never hides his appreciation or affection. But he also speaks up
when he has to; he lets you know when it’s just not working for him.
Murphy seldom skips a meal, and he doesn’t short change his personal hygiene. His concentration
is intense. When he’s really on, he doesn’t know the meaning of the word no;
yet with the proper motivation, he’s a fine team player. Murphy’s work ethic, spirit of play,
and sense of self offer much to think about and emulate. For this illustrator, he’s the very
definition of a good role model.
