• Local or whole-body exposure to cold;
• Insufficient recovery time (Punnett and Wegman, 2004).
NSSI collects data on occupational diseases resulting from exposure of employees to factors
in the work environment, however data are very scarce. For 2009 it reports only 116 cases of
occupational diseases, with only 12 of them being MSDs (see Table 3.2). However it is worth
noting that occupational accidents (adding up to 2,047 cases in the nine months of 2011),
and resulting cases of MSDs do not fall into this classification. In comparison with previous
records of occupational diseases produced by the National Centre of Public Health Protection
(NCPHP n.d.), the number of cases seem to have decreased drastically (eg in 2003 the total
number of MSDs was only 222); suggesting that before 2009 no distinction was made between
occupational diseases and occupational accidents. Experts suggest that the drop in incidence
may be associated with non-disclosure of illness in the context of recently worsened economic
conditions and resulting fear of job loss. 18
Table 3.2. Registered cases of occupational diseases in 2009
Total number of diseases
Of those caused by:
• Local vibration
• General vibration
• Prolonged/frequent sitting
• Pressure on wrist
• Repetitive work with asymmetrical movements
• Other repetitive/monotonous work
• Use of tools in awkward manner (jerked movements)
• Other cases of carrying or lifting heavy weights
Total MDSs
Of those:
• Elbow osteoarthritis
• Intervertebral disk damage
• Shoulder periarthritis
• Medial epicondylitis
• Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
Number of cases
While this list provides a developed structure for collecting incidence data on specific MSDs
caused by work, it is still not clear whether public bodies in Bulgaria manage to collect accurate
and reliable data on work-related MSDs. The fact that so few cases of MSDs caused by work
were recorded by NSSI may pose concerns over the methods of recording and classifying
