It is with deepest sympathy that I send my most heartfelt condolences to all of the members and families of the North
Perth Fire Department. The thoughts and prayers of the Centre Wellington Fire Department are with you at this difficult
time. As a neighbour just to the east of you, I stood at work listening to my pager and the frantic voice of the dispatcher
as Palmerston was summoned to your call, wondering the extent of the incident. For as long as I live I will recall the
exact moment I heard that come over the air.
As we arrived at the memorial services I was floored at the amount of emergency service personnel in attendance,
however as the procession continued to the arena, we could hardly believe the tremendous amount of support from the
community. The crowd seemed at times to be 20 deep during the entire length of procession. You should all be truly
proud of the community that you serve in. As a fellow firefighter, to witness that sort of public outpouring of support and
love, was truly touching.
Stay strong, and know that your community both loves and respects our fallen heroes.

On behalf of Goulais Fire & Rescue Volunteers, I’d like to offer our deepest condolences. We suffered a similar tragedy
in 2002 when April Hopikin was lost in a LODD. Stay strong for each other and for the members of your community.
This incident will forever change your department and your membership, but the calls for service won’t stop. Persevere
and keep doing the job - that’s what Ken and Ray would want you to do.

Please accept my condolences on the loss of the two very brave men . As a token of love and appreciation for all
firefighter, I have placed two red roses at several firehouses around Kitchener. On behalf of Kitchener- Waterloo, I

I was proud to be in attendance at the services of Ken and Ray. I have never been as proud to be a firefighter as I was
that day. The sheer numbers of town folk, firefighters, ems, and police services who attended was overwhelming. It just

It was with much sadness that I learned of the loss of two of your members. I grew up in Listowel and have such great
memories of the place. I have been a volunteer with Nashwaak Valley Fire Department in Durham Bridge , NB (located
about 25 Km outside of Fredericton) since it was founded 23 years ago.

As a former Volunteer Firefighter for over 20 years it saddened me deeply to learn of the deaths of these 2 brave men.

that only a very few individuals have the opportunity to serve their community in such a honourable profession. God

The Oxford dictionary provides the definition of community as "all the people living in a specific locality". It really
does not provide or capture the true defintion of a small community. Where a stranger will say hello to you as you pass
them on the street, or show thoughtfulness and compassion when least expected. A small community is where if you do
not know a specific person, you do know someone who knows them and thus affects you. A small community is where
someone feels the heart ache of someone they did not know. We did not know Ray or Ken directly but live in ones'
neighbourhood; have a relative that worked with them; a daughter that works with a sister; a friend that is a relative.
Our thoughts and prayers go to the community, friends and in particular the families at this time.

Small town living allows us to truly appreciate heros in our lives. From a young age, I have been in awe of the men who
would run for the firehall when the siren rang out, including two uncles whom I considered heros. Today, while the call
to duty is now electronic pagers, I have two brothers and several friends who are those same kind of heros. I have seen
that bravery with my own eyes. When that call comes in, they act. Day, night, whenever. When not serving at a call, they
contribute many many hours of their personal time in classrooms training, many times while the public is even unaware
they are doing so. That is what hurts the most about losing Ray and Ken. Our firefighters can never be totally prepared
for the unknowns they willingly challenge in responding to a call for help. These men gave their lives doing a job they
were well trained for, and fully dedicated to. For that, they will never be forgotten by those of us who are, even more
now, in awe of their bravery.

We are so sad about what has happened in Listowel. We lived and worked in Listowel for 35 plus years so know how

Today was the day when we said our good byes.
To the two brave men who recently died.
They died doing their job, fighting a fire.
To do what they did, they must be admired.
They were saving the home of souls they didn't know
With such courage that only a fireman could show.
Something had happened, though what, we're not sure
for two of the men did not return from their tour.
Their brothers did search and found them together
But it was too late. They were gone forever.
A tragic event on that March day
But the brother's courage and strength never would sway.
The scene became somber since two lives were lost,
Becoming a hero was not without cost.
These two men paid with both of their lives
And thus, we must now say our good byes.
They took their final ride atop the red truck
With all of the fervour, one could be awestruck.
Between the two ladders with the procession
They honored those men in the fire tradition.
An immense sea of blue followed behind
With the greatest support you'll ever find.
A brotherhood so close you wouldn't believe
and when it was finished no one could leave.
For that seemed to mean they left a brother behind
And firemen know that's not how they're designed.
They were both given honors, their families proud
Then the radio call was broadcast allowed,
That two of the men would not return home
But they'll journey together and not be alone.
The last bell did ring and they were carried away
But they remain in our hearts forever to stay.

On behalf of the Augusta Township Fire Dept, I wish to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families
of the two fallen firefighters and to the North Perth Fire Department.
On behalf of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs Retired, we extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to
families of District Deputy Chief Ken Rea and Firefighter Ray Walter and to all members of the North Perth Fire
Service. From those of us who have served our own municipalities in the fire service, we have an intimate knowledge of
what our brothers and sisters face every time the alarm is sounded. Words cannot really ease the loss you have suffered
but know that you are in the prayers and thoughts of every brother and sister in the fire service.
As a former Listowel firefighter from 1971 - 1979 I had the great fortune to work/play with many other volunteers like
me. We practiced and fought many horrendous fires in that time, but luckily never had to bear the burrden of such a loss
such as yours. Its hard to find the words to express my simpathy. To the families of these brave brothers, I say 'GOD

Words at a time like this seem so inadequate to describe how one really feels about the passing of DDFC Ken Rae and
FF Ray Walter but hopefully there will be some solace for their families and colleagues in knowing there are so many

What is a fireman?
He is the guy next door - a man's man with the memory of a little boy. He has never gotten over the excitement of
engines and sirens and danger.
He is a guy like you and me with wants and worries and unfulfilled dreams.
Yet he stands taller than most of us.
He is a fireman.
He puts it all on the line when the bell rings.
A fireman is at once the most fortunate and the least fortunate of men.
He is a man who saves lives because he has seen too much death.
He is a gentle man because he has seen the awesome power of violence out of control.
He is responsive to a child's laughter because his arms have held too many small bodies that will never laugh again.
He is a man who appreciates the simple pleasures of life - hot coffee held in numb, unbending fingers - a warm bed for
bone and muscle compelled beyond feeling - the camaraderie of brave men - the divine peace and selfless service of a
job well done in the name of all men.
He doesn't wear buttons or wave flags or shout obscenities.
When he marches, it is to honor a fallen comrade.
He doesn't preach the brotherhood of man.
He lives it.

fire fighters are all about. I have had to call on our volenteer fire fighters, the quick response, the hard work and their
understanding was tramendis, with that I thank you. My thoughts and prayers go out to the their families, their fellow

we lose Brothers in the line of duty.

My mom answered the phone and dispatched the volunteer firefighters in Listowel for many years. I can remember the
scary feeling each time that phone rang and then hoping each time they were called out that it wasn't too serious and
that all would be safe and return home to their families. I also remember thinking how brave those men are to volunteer
for this role. Today, my heartfelt sympathies go out to all of the firefighters and their families at this sad time. Listowel
will always be "home" and when a tragedy like this hits, it affects all of us. Thank-you to all firefighters
for your bravery and courage.

On behalf of the National Board of Directors of the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association (CVFSA), I wish to
pass on our sincerest condolences to the North Perth and Area firefighters and the families of Firefighters Kenneth Rea
and Ray Walter. Firefighting is a dangerous profession with many risks. In communities across this nation volunteer
firefighters are the emergency service providers of their towns and villages. One does not become a volunteer firefighter
for money or glory. They do it because their community counts on them. Over the years this great nation, Canada, has
had many volunteer firefighters just like Ray and Ken who have been killed answering this call to duty. Over 85,000
firefighters just like them are ready and willing to answer the call from their communities, no matter the time, no matter
where it is, what it involves, or what it interrupts. These brave men and women who we refer to as volunteer firefighters
should be thanked every day. To the families of Kenneth and Ray, we ensure you that they will not be forgotten.
My wife and I wish to express our deepest condolences to the families and company of the NPFD on their loss. As a
former resident of Listowel, I have seen these brave men in action and every person should take great pride in the
heroism of these men.

families of Chief Rae and FF Walter, as well as their colleagues of the North Perth Fire Service. Please know that our

day on March 17, 2005 we here at the YKFD suffered our saddest day when we lost two of our members Kevin Olson
and Cyril Fyfe. Be strong. Stay safe.

I would like to pass along heartfelt sympathy on behalf of myself and the guys at our fire hall from Deer Lake Fire
Rescue in Deer Lake, Newfoundland. We heard about your loss today and although we have never lost a member
while on a call we understand how hard it must be to lose a friend, and brother. We would like to express sympathy to
your members and the families of those fallen. I am sure any of the guys here would love to be able to attend the
memorial to show support but please know that everyone here is thinking about your loss.

relies upon for public safety. As I said above I don't know what to say except thank you and hope that their families are

I Wish to send to the entire North Perth Fire Service and to the families of firefighter Raymond Walter and deputy
district chief Kenneth Rea my deepest condolences. It is never easy to lose a brother in the field. They both served their
community with Courage, Compassion and Selflessness. They will be forever loved and honored through the same
Courage, Compassion and Selflessness of each and every firefighter of the great Brotherhood. If you could please keep
me informed for the funeral arrangements, I will try to recruit fellow firefighters and drive down to attend the ceremony.
