Chapter 6 Conclusions We begin by summarizing the results presented through this dissertation, placing those conclusions in the context of the questions asked in the introduction. We then go on to discuss future directions in this field. 6.1 Summary In the introduction we posed four specific questions relating to the work undertaken in this thesis: • What is the nature of the spectra observed from the nuclei of nearby radio galaxies? • What can be said about the masses of the black holes in these radio galaxies 272
ased on the gas kinematics? • How is the gas organized in the central regions? • What connections can be found between the central engines and that gas? Here we summarize the conclusions we came to through this dissertation in the context of those questions. What is the nature of the spectra observed from the nuclei of nearby radio galaxies? In Chapter 3, we presented medium resolution spectra obtained using STIS on board the HST for the 21 galaxies in the UGC FR-I sample (Chapter 2), using three parallel adjacent spectroscopic slit positions to map the gas kinematics. We find that the gas in all of the nuclei is compatible with a single kinematic description: a rotating gas disk, where random motions are always important. We see patterns reminiscent of rotation in 67% of the nuclei, in the remainder of the galaxies the non-detection is accounted for by either face on morphologies or complex central morphologies (Chapter 3). We find that the inclusion of an additional broad component improves the fit to the spectrum in 62% of the galaxies, in the vicinity of the Hα + [N II] complex. The 273
