On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy
was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas, and the world
changed. In 2011, in Lisbon Falls, Maine, Al Templeton
(who is the owner of a diner which is about to close and
who is gravely ill) reveals that his storeroom is a portal
to the past, to a particular day in 1958. He enlists Jake
Epping, a burned-out high school teacher, to take on a
mission which had become Al’s obsession: stop Lee
Harvey Oswald and prevent the Kennedy assassination,
correct the past, and undo some of the evils of the 20th
century. Once back in the past, however, Epping is
confronted with what really happened back then and
what the present might be if past events had not
occurred. The book jacket notes, “Time-travel has never
been so believable. Or so terrifying.”
Historical fiction is one of – if not the – favorite genres
of Readers Ink members, and we look forward to
discussing this book at our meeting. Why not join us on
June 26? (But you’d better start reading it the moment
you read this, because the novel contains 849 pages!)
Retirement Club
Our last meeting for the season was
on April 26. We had a very informative
presentation by Ross Winn, a tax attorney.
He discussed some of the problems and solutions that
surviving spouses face after the first spouse initiates the
estate plan (known as kicking the bucket).
Life insurance proceeds are a major financial resource
upon the death of a spouse. Retirees should be aware that
some insurance companies now put the proceeds into
money market accounts and mail the beneficiaries a
checkbook. Insurance companies increasingly are sending
out checkbooks rather than checks; the checkbook
provides the beneficiary with access to the proceeds
through low interest-bearing accounts. Agents may start
calling at a time when the beneficiary is in an unstable
emotional state and can be persuaded pretty easily. Those
agents may want the beneficiaries to make decisions that
should be deferred.
A major insurance company recently settled a complaint
with a group of state insurance commissioners. The
company was required to pay around $700 million to
beneficiaries for death benefits the company was holding
because the beneficiaries could not be found. It was
revealed that the insurance company had no trouble stopping
payments on the death of people holding annuities.
RV Club
In April our club’s trip was to the Fort
McDowell RV Resort in Fountain Hills,
AZ, just outside Scottsdale. Charlotte and
Bert Emert were the Wagonmasters and did of great job
of planning the trip. The first night the Emerts provided
pulled beef sandwiches, and other members provided
appetizers. We all participated in activities including
golfing, shopping, and exploring the area. One day we
took a boat tour on Lake Saguaro. For our dinner night,
Bert and Mike Bozzo grilled tri-tips, and other members
provided entrees. We ended the trip with a group of us
going to Phil’s Filling Station Grill in Fountain Hills. An
unexpected surprise was a herd of wild horses that would
show up daily in the desert area across from the resort.
At our April Meeting, the club elected new Officers for
the 2012/2113 Year. The new Board is: John Taylor,
President; Jill Thomas, Vice President; Bert Emert,
Treasurer; Sammee Zeile, Secretary. Congratulations, and
we look forward to a great year under their leadership.
We’re still planning our May trip to Rancho California.
We will close out the year in Newport Beach at the
Newport Dunes RV.
The SCSHRV Club meets every third Wednesday of
the month at 5 pm in the Mirada room. For further
information on the club activities, contact Tom Thomas
at 760-342-3282 or email: stuffinskis@ earthlink.net.
