Chartered Clubs
We are coming upon the time of year when our
Chartered Clubs begin their new year with the
election of board members. Chartered Clubs are
the backbone of our Sun City Shadow Hills
lifestyle as clubs offer the opportunity for the
direct influence of each resident into daily,
weekly, and monthly activities. With over 40 clubs
and groups there is a wide variety of activities to
share with your neighbors.
As a general overview to the operation of each
club, the membership of the club will select at
least three willing (or sometimes not so willing)
participants from its membership to conduct the
business of the club and guide it in its activities.
Although the role of board member for each club
is very important, much of the success comes from
the effort, work, and support of all the members
as a whole. The most active and successful clubs
work together and support one another for the
greater benefit of all. These clubs have no shortage
of volunteers wanting to participate at various
levels without hesitation including the tasks of
setting up and operating the activities.
Pointing out that the underlying success of each
club depends on the great membership by no
means undermines the significance of the clubs’
elected board members. It takes those elected as
your club board and their sense of fairness and
goodwill as well as strong character to lead in the
decision making process. For those willing to come
forward and give of their own time to help improve
the quality of life for their neighbors it takes a
strong person with a sense of community. If I just
described you and you are not currently involved
with a club make sure you stop by the Lifestyle desk
to visit with our staff so they can get you involved.
Help is always wanted, needed, and appreciated
at all levels of availability, so if you want to get
involved with an existing club or start up a new
one, our Lifestyle department is here to help.
Upcoming Age Verification Survey
Sun City Shadow Hills Community Association
is an age-restricted community operated in
compliance with all applicable state and federal laws.
Pursuant to state and federal law, every owner of,
or person residing in, a home in Sun City Shadow
Hills must complete an “Age Verification Form”
to certify his/her eligibility to reside in our active
adult community. Without proper age verification,
Sun City Shadow Hills could lose its status as an
Adult (55 and older) Community.
When you purchased your home in Sun City
Shadow Hills you were asked to fill out age
verification information based on the occupants
residing in your residence at the time. Soon you
should receive a mailing from the Association
office asking you to update your residency
information. Please fill this out, whether there
have been changes in the status of persons living
in your household or not, by checking the
appropriate locations on the form and return the
form to the Association office as soon as possible.
If there have been changes to the status of your
household, the Association office will follow up
with you once they have received your initial
form back in the mail.
Once all forms have been returned to the
Association, the Board of directors will be able to
certify that the Association continues to meet
the qualifications as an Adult (55 and older)
Community.
If you have any questions please feel free to
contact the Association staff. We will be glad to
help you or direct your questions to the proper
staff member so that your questions are answered
in a timely manner. The Association office staff is
looking forward to assisting you.
Juanita Flores
Since the opening of the new Santa Rosa
Clubhouse in October, we have seen, heard,
and experienced the growing pains of adding
such an enormous amenity. One person has
stepped up to the challenge and has been a
tremendous help creating consistency in both
the facility and the service that is provided there.
Juanita – who has over five years of experience
monitoring the Montecito Clubhouse, a fitness
center, and a pool area – has leveraged that
experience to bring the Santa Rosa online
with great success. Juanita brings a bright smile
and pleasant personality to her shift and has
delivered to all residents the knowledge they
need to fully utilize and enjoy their new
clubhouse. Juanita knows and understands
the operating procedures and rules, and she
applies them both equally and professionally
even in the most delicate of situations.
Congratulations, Juanita, on your dedication
to service and for making our residents the focus
of the service we provide. Your ability to make
others feel they are an important part of the
community is an invaluable asset. Thank you
for the work you do each and every day.
Design Review
BY JIM WIEBORG
New DRC Guidelines
All of you should have received your copies of the
proposed DRC Guidelines. Please take the time to review
the document and provide comments as you see fit. Once
approved, there is no going back to make changes, so now
is the time. This revision is a slow process that has taken
approximately three years to accomplish, so you will be
living with this document for a while.
Several times I have written about the importance of
staking new trees, how you must periodically check that the
support wires are loose enough that the trunk can move
when the wind blows, but one thing seems to be forgotten.
Eventually, you need to remove the stakes! When the
diameter of the tree reaches four to five inches, you should
be able to remove them safely. As the tree gets larger, the
diameter of the trunk increases more quickly; and we tend
to forget to loosen the support wires to prevent them from
cutting into the tree’s trunk. Eventually, the bark will grow
over the wire if it is not loosened or removed. This interferes
with the tree’s uptake of water and nutrients and its growth.
(Refer to Design Review Guidelines Section 6.1.1.)
Be sure to check your irrigation timing. With the high
temperatures and wind, you should have increased your
irrigation system’s run time. The best indicator is to check
your plants in the heat of the day to see if they are drooping
because they have not received enough water.
President’s Report
As reported in The Weekly News on scshca.com in May.
For those that regularly attend the Board of
Directors monthly meetings, you may have
noticed that the Board has added a new agenda
item to its open meeting. Starting with the
April 2012 meeting our Board will include, as
part of its meeting, a “President’s Report.” The
“President’s Report” will primarily provide to the
members updates and information regarding
items the Board is currently working on (subject
to the restrictions imposed on the Board by the
Association’s Governing Documents and State
and Federal Laws).
Items announced in the President’s April 2012
report:
• Capital Management Procedures have been
implemented in order to prevent overspending.
Requirements for approving capital improvements
will be put into a folder and held until the end
of the fiscal year. At that time, projects will be
selected based on the Community’s needs,
the amount of surplus monies available, and the
priorities previously established.
• SCSH resident Mike Bennett has been
appointed as the Chairman of the Emergency
Preparedness Committee. The Board has also
recently approved the new Emergency
Preparedness Plan and revisions to the
Committee’s Charter. Additionally, Phil Olson
has been appointed as the Chairman of the
In Your Backyard…
Desert Bighorn Sheep
Rosie was a bighorn sheep that
frequented Landmark Golf Course.
The golfers would often share their
sandwich with her. This caused what
we call “imprinting.” Rosie began
to prefer hanging out with people
instead of her own kind.
Management at the golf course
worried that Rosie might kick a child
or butt someone, so one day a truck
arrived and animal control workers
took her way up into the hills, so she
would be with the other bighorn
sheep again. Then a few months
later Rosie showed up in a parking
lot by Circuit City in Rancho
Mirage. It was a wonder she wasn’t
hit by a car.
Something had to be done. She
was taken to The Living Desert;
and it was decided that, if Rosie
wouldn’t stay in the hills, maybe she
could play an important role in the
education department so visitors
could learn more about endangered
species.
And that’s where Rosie was when
I met her. She ate from my hand and
looked up at me with her big blue
eyes, and it was love at first sight.
Because the animals at The Living
Desert don’t have to forage for their
food and don’t come in contact with
predators, they usually live much
longer there than they would in the
wild. Rosie’s life expectancy was about
8 years, but she ended up living for
14 and died peacefully in her sleep,
and I cried when I heard she’d died.
BY CAROL DEROSSETT
What’s this? I’m crying over a
bighorn sheep? But Rosie wasn’t
your run-of-the-mill sheep. She was
special. She let me pet her. She won
many over with her charm.
The desert bighorn sheep is one of
four hoofed animals in our Sonoran
Desert. Many live the mountains of
Arizona. Some also live in our
mountains above the Coachella V
alley. They are well adapted to live in
this arid environment because they
can eat plants as a source of their
moisture and, secondly, they have
enlarged stomach compartments
that can store water to last for several
days. They can also drink 20 percent
of their body weight (up to two
gallons) in just a few minutes at a
watering hole. And when the green
plants have dried up, they eat cactus
fruit for moisture.
A bighorn’s hooves are specialized
to enable it to run and climb to get
away from its predators. Bighorns
feel more protected in the steep,
inaccessible terrain of canyon walls
and rugged terrain. To stay cool,
they simply look for a shady spot to
lie down. Brains are sensitive to heat,
so desert bighorn sheep have
evaporative cooling in their nasal
passages, resulting in a cooling of
blood vessels that go to the brain.
These animals socialize in herds,
benefiting as individuals as many
eyes watch for predators. Many
mammals burrow into the earth to
stay cool in our hot desert, but
bighorns will find a cool spot in the
shade and then just be inactive
during the hot day.
Both males and females have
horns. The ewes have narrow horns
that only grow to be about 12 inches
long and have about a half a curl,
while the males have wide, massive
horns with a full curl. These horns
can weigh up to 40 pounds.
Bighorns have declined in numbers
mainly due to human encroachment.
Adding additional watering holes
in our mountains can help these
animals survive. They generally
breed in August and September. The
males will butt heads for dominance,
and it is said that you can actually
hear the crack of their butting heads
over a mile away.
The females leave the herd to have
their lambs around February and
return to the herd about a week
later. The lambs imprint the spot
where they were born, and then they
try to return to that spot when they
are ready to drop a lamb of their
own.
Several years ago we had a
pneumonia epidemic that was killing
our bighorns. We worried about
their survival. A couple of springs
later, I was on a bus tour heading up
Highway 74 when we spotted a herd
of 14. We were delighted to see two
lambs among the herd, so we knew
then they were back.
Book Review
BY SUE HAFFLEY
The Uncoupling by Meg Wolitzer
The Uncoupling is a delightful summer read by
an author who gets the human condition, Meg
Wolitzer. A suburban New Jersey high school
drama teacher decides to stage the ancient Greek
play, Lysistrata by Aristophanes, as the annual
drama club offering. In the original Greek, the
women of Greece withhold sex in a communal
effort to stop a long-running war. The New
Jersey version mystically foists a spell on the
suburb as, one by one, the female staff and
students of Eleanor Roosevelt High School start
experiencing a chilly draft: it winds its way up
from their toes into their very hearts and psyches
as they decide, each for reasons of her own, that
sex is simply no longer a feasible activity. The
men are left perplexed, sometimes angry, but
mostly baffled. Each story is individual but the
outcome becomes communal.
I’ve read most of Meg Wolitzer’s books
(The Wife, The Position, The Ten-Year Nap) and
what keeps me coming back are her credible
characterizations. Both her women and her men
the iew
are thoroughly contemporary with recognizably
complex situations and histories. Her deft
storytelling – combined with generous doses of
humor, insight, and a lack of rancor – makes for
enjoyable reading. That’s if you appreciate a
genre heavy on psychological portraits of
modern-day people and how, in the living of their
everyday lives, they create compelling literature.
If you’re looking for action, The Uncoupling is
not your cup of tea!
There are a dozen or so characters featured
in the book, including Dory and Robby Lang,
the affable and loving couple who are both
English teachers at Eleanor Roosevelt; Leeanne
Bannerjee, Ph.D., the alluring East Indian school
psychologist; Ed Cutler, the financially successful
hedge fund manager; and Marissa Clayborn, the
scholastically gifted athlete and thespian. All
abide in Stellar Plains, New Jersey, and each story
relates just how the spell turned boycott plays out
individually and collectively from the perspectives
of both the character and those close to them. Of
course a story of this nature is bound to examine
and implicitly comment on the role of sex (or the
lack of it) in our modern-day world. This is a
sophisticated take on the subject that most, if not
all, will find inoffensive. Don’t expect explicit
scenes or language here; that’s not Meg
Wolitzer’s style.
But I’m betting a fair number of us will relate
to and enjoy this tale based on the ancient Greek
comedy. Happy reading!
Where was my Shangri-La, my Xanadu? Over 40 years
ago Gina and I moved into our first home in Mar Vista.
We were in love, and this was our very own Xanadu –
a small two-bedroom, one-bath cottage built right
after WWII. We were both New Yorkers, city people,
apartment dwellers. Never lived in our own home. Never
had a mortgage. Never had a front lawn or owned a
lawnmower. Gina was hoping for a larger, more stylish,
newer home; but this is what I could afford at the time.
I told her, “Not to worry, it’s only temporary, and we’ll
buy a new one in five years, someday I’ll build you a
and new castle.” Well five years turned into 40,
but we added on twice to accommodate the two
kids, a dog, a large den for the oversized 35-inch
television, and a remodeled kitchen with a
backyard view of Century City. This was my very
own Xanadu.
Soon it became evident, my Xanadu became
my will do…my get around-to-it…my Gonnadu.
Business everyday didn’t leave much time for the
extra things that I promised Gina I would do…
my Gonnadu.
The kids moved out, the dog died, and it was
time. We decided on a small weekender at Sun
City Shadow Hills. However, it was still either
the business or the house, so I gave up the
business and retired. Not good enough for Gina.
She said to me, “Where is my castle, my Xanadu,
you promised me: ‘Some Day?’ You’re retired,
sell the LA house, the weekender, and let’s move
to a bigger home.”
Six years ago Gina and I built our very own
Xanadu. So here we are in a beautiful Shadow
Hills 2,447-foot Dorado model home, on three-
the iew
quarters of an acre. With a two-car garage, grass
in front, plenty of grass in back, rose garden,
vegetable garden, flower garden, swimming pool,
hot tub, fire pit, and a citrus orchid. I even have
a partridge in a fig tree. This now is my dream
home. Sun City retirement keeps me so active
that I’m living in my realistic Xanadu. But…
what went wrong? My Xanadu has become:
“Myron, clean the garage.”
“Don’t worry, Gina, later, I’m going to my
art club.”
“Myron, pick up the doggy poop.”
“Later, I’m late for my golf time.”
“Myron, clean off the back yard.”
“Can’t now, the boys are waiting for me to
play billiards, later.”
“Clean the vegetable patch. Wash the car,
empty the dishwasher, check the dryer.”
“Don’t worry, Gina, someday I’ll get it done”
…Gonnadu.
The Woman’s Club of Indio (WCI) hosted “Celebrating
a Century of Women with Taste” in February of this year
at the Hacienda Del Toro, Empire Polo Club. The gala
fundraising affair was attended by 340 guests. Debbie
Council, a resident of SCSH since September 2005, is
the current president and opened the program by saying,
“Never underestimate the power of women getting
together over a cup of tea.” Among the 54 current
members in the club are SCSH residents (seen above, left
In 1912, Sara Drummond and Estella Hall
brought together a group of women and started
the social club. These women, who lived on
isolated ranches in Indio and throughout the
Coachella Valley, felt a need and desire for social
interaction and companionship. They would
meet twice a month at Sara’s house to exchange
ideas that would benefit everyone. The original
name of the group was the Altrurian Literary
Club. In 1917, the name was changed to the
Woman’s Club of Indio, and a year later they
became a part of the General Federation of
Women’s Clubs (GFWC) that was chartered
by Congress. Since 1920, the GFWC WCI has
been meeting on the first Wednesday of every
month. The WCI is currently the oldest service
organization in the Coachella Valley and is also
part of the California Federation of Women’s
Clubs.
The founders, Sara and Estella, would be
proud to know that what they started over
100 years ago is still successfully raising money
for scholarships plus charitable and social
organizations throughout the Coachella Valley.
The organization also provides volunteers in
support of various projects like serving lunches
twice a month at the Coachella Valley Rescue
Mission, coordinating toy and food drives,
making personal care kits, and planting trees at
Jacob C. Domingues Park.
While visiting the Coachella Valley Historical
Museum, I saw an exhibit dated April 15, 1918,
that totally touched my heart and made me feel
proud to be an American. During the First World
War in France, eight-year-old Emilie Dondeau’s
father was killed in action. She was only one of
thousands of French children that the war left
fatherless. The WCI adopted Emilie and from
1918 – 1922 sent to her mother the equivalent
of 10 cents a day (or half a Franc) to help them
endure the hardships of their war-ravaged
country. The WCI also periodically sent gift
baskets, dolls, blankets, and more. I was amazed
that a small benevolent organization in Indio
would reach out to help someone in need over
5,000 miles away. This historical exhibit is on
display through May 2012. The museum is
located at 82616 Miles Avenue and is open
Thursday through Saturday, 10 – 4 pm, and
Sunday, 1 – 4 pm.
While interviewing the SCSH residents of the
WCI, I captured a familiar and recurring theme:
caring, giving, satisfying, camaraderie, trusting,
and pride in the community. They also enjoy and
respect Debbie’s leadership role as president of
the club for the past two years. I then asked each
person why they decided to join and participate
in the WCI. Here are their candid responses:
• Jane Tufts: enjoys doing things to help
other people, feels empowered, likes to have
fun and meet other people and discover new
friends.
• Ellen Plach: loves to make Easter baskets
and personal care bags and do volunteer
work.
• Gloria Beauregard: it’s all about helping
people, likes to be a volunteer at different
events, Citizenship Committee Chair of
the WCI.
• Janet Beaty: appreciates the down-to-earth
women, likes working with children,
supports community services.
• Teri Reid: likes the people, feels it’s very
welcoming and fun, found the perfect
volunteer work, Amenities Committee
Chair of the WCI.
• Patricia Davis: relishes giving back to the
community.
Teri pretty much summed it all up by
commenting, “The more you give, the more you
get.”
In 2011, WCI members participated in 39
projects, logged over 3,000 volunteer hours, and
through various fundraisers raised and donated
over $13,000 back into the community. The
club members also accumulated $10,000 “in
kind” donations (items purchased by members
for various projects without club treasury
reimbursements). At the end of the interview,
Debbie’s parting words were, “Our main
emphasis and mission is literacy and education:
promoting the arts in the community, historical
preservation, civic participation, health and
public safety, and empowering women.”
When I quit smoking 29 years ago, I gained 30
pounds. The doctor assured me that quitting was the
right thing to do, but I was discouraged by the weight
gain. I have lost and gained those 30 pounds ten times
over the years. I feel better when I’ve lost weight. Then
another vacation, holiday, or special occasion rolls around
and bam! It’s back on. I’m a lifetime member of Weight
Watchers stuck in a rut.
I thought that the Fitness Center’s six-week summer
program, Beat the Heat, starting July 2, might help; but
I needed some motivation. So I asked four residents how
they manage their weight-loss trials and tribulations.
Each person had a different reason for initially losing
weight. And each uses a different program or method.
But they all agreed that it takes time and dedication.
Ken Fails had a diagnosis of a
pre-diabetic medical condition
that started him on a low-carb,
low-fat eating program. He never
considered a “diet” because he
didn’t feel the need to lose
weight. He just wanted to be
healthy. Ken lost about ten
pounds on his own. Then, his
doctor suggested he attend a pre-diabetes education
class. He learned about portion size, what foods are
better for you, and the importance of exercise and eating
regular meals. He lost another 30 pounds within a year
and is hoping to cut back or eliminate some of his
medications. Ken said that, if you pay attention to
portion size of low carb, low fat meals and exercise every
day, it will be easier to maintain a healthy life style.
Bettan Tomassino was very
heavy as a young adult and first
tried diet pills prescribed by her
doctor. She initially lost 20
pounds but was sick from the
pills. She then decided to try it
on her own, with help from her
friends. She changed her diet
and started going to the gym.
Within a year, Bettan was down about 50 pounds. After
a small set-back, she joined Weight Watchers. She lost
another 20 pounds and credits the Fitness Center for her
motivation to keep it off.
Myron Crespin watched his
wife lose weight and realized it
was his time to “get real.” He
returned from a vacation in
Europe last year and knew he
had to do something. His doctor
suggested a program of Medifast
drinks during the day plus a
healthy meal of protein and
salad at dinner. He was never hungry on the program, it
was easy to follow, and he lost 30 pounds in three
months. There was a rough patch over the holidays, but
Myron admits it was due to not eating right and missing
his exercise. He’s happy to say that he’s back on track
now. He said that the key is to keep working whatever
“diet program” you are following and to exercise.
Dianne Brown
was a yo-yo dieter
for years. Simply put,
she said, “When I
lost weight, I felt in
control and great
about myself. When
I gained weight, I
felt insecure.” She
has been very successful in the last eight years
on Jenny Craig. In fact, Dianne now works
as a counselor for them. She lost 40 pounds
in six months and dropped a couple of dress
sizes. Her overall health has improved as well,
and she was able to stop some medications
completely or reduced the dosage. Dianne
said that dieting is 99% mental and that you
must be ready to change eating habits and
endorse exercise.
Everyone agreed that motivation, a goal,
and daily exercise are keys to the process.
They said they feel healthier, look better,
have greater self-esteem, and loads of energy.
Doesn’t everyone want to feel like this? I sure
do!
Now I find myself in the unenviable but
inevitable position of having a pre-diabetic
diagnosis, and necessary weight loss is in
my future. Writing this article has made me
realize what’s important in my life. And that
is to be the healthiest and look the best I can.
SCSH has so much to offer and I want the
energy to do everything.
The motivation is staring back at me from
the scale every day. I’d rather have the choice
be mine than the doctor’s. So, I’ll take these
suggestions and run with them. Look for me
She is real class
I love to hear her voice
And receive her Email
She is God’s perfect gift
To the human male
Her fragrance is enchanting
And stirs my very soul
To make her mine forever
Is my constant goal
She’s filled with God’s spirit
It shows upon her face
She is an earthen vessel
Everywhere and every place
She helps so many people
Her specialty is grief
So many hurting people
In her find relief
She has a mischievous side
Which thrills me to the core
When sometimes I am with her
It never is a bore
Her name I love is Barbara
She is such a great delight
To be my mate forever
I want with all my might
Soon I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
Restaurant. The entire kitchen
staff went above and beyond to
set the ambiance with their pink
flowers on each table. The menu
featuring Prime Rib, Turkey,
prepared by Chef José. He was
also able to work in wonderful
breakfast and dessert items to
round out a complete menu,
celebrating mom’s special day.
While on the subject of popular
choices…our signature fare, the
dish of choice for our frequent
visitors. The combination of
mixed greens, candied walnuts,
dates, strawberries, dried
cranberries, blue cheese, topped
with chicken breast and sweet
tarragon vinaigrette, is not only
a healthy selection, but is cool
and refreshing for the hot
summer months.
GENERAL MANAGER
New Disability Flag Policy
Beginning July 1, 2012, there will be a new
procedure for obtaining disability flags for use
on the golf course. The procedure was
recommended by the Golf Staff and Golf
Advisory Committee, and it was approved by the
Sun City Shadow Hills Board of Directors at the
April Board Meeting.
The purpose of the procedure is to improve the
conditions of the golf course, particularly around
the putting surface and after overseeding in the
fall. The new procedure is:
Eligibility:
• A Sun City Shadow Hills resident must
present a current DMV-issued parking
placard, or other government agency
document, which notates a disability
requiring accommodation; or
• A Sun City Shadow Hills resident must
present a current dated doctor’s note from
a physician indicating the specific amount
of accommodation necessary.
A Sun City Shadow Hills resident will be
provided a disability flag the first time if the
resident is unaware of this rule; however, the
resident will not receive a flag for future rounds
until the above documentation is received by
the Pro Shop staff. When presenting the
documentation, the resident will be asked to sign
a statement regarding use of the disability flag for
the current season. Each year, every golfer will
need to renew the disability flag permit.
Thank you for your understanding as we seek
to present the best playing conditions possible for
all residents.
Although summer is now here and our winter
neighbors have left for friendly climates (either
for the entire summer or extended vacations), we
are still rocking and rolling in Lifestyle. There is
way too much living to do to sit idle, so we came
up with a wonderful plan to keep us going in
June.
First off, our happy hours are back at the
Montecito. This time we are getting happy
on Monday afternoons from 4 – 6 pm. Enjoy
wine, cheese, and great company for only $5
all-inclusive during this social power hour. We
will have limited seating; make sure you buy your
wristbands early so we don’t have to turn anyone
away at the door.
Our summer getaways will also take shape with
another fun outing to Harrah’s Casino in San
Diego on Thursday, June 7. You can’t lose as the
day away in the picturesque mountains and great
weather of is worth the $5 ticket. We also will
be heading out to Sylmar for a fun day at the
amazing on Thursday, June 14. The Nethercutt
features over 250 classic automobiles among
other fascinating collectibles. This is the perfect
treat for dads of all ages or anyone who loves the
classics.
June also features the kick-off to our summer
concert series. Enjoy the spicy sounds on Salsa
Night (Saturday, June 16). You can relax and
mingle with friends or dance the night away.
Get your Zumba on if you dare. See you in the
clubhouse!
of articles talking about their innovative design.
Turns out some of the features of our new homes
made quite a splash not only with home buyers,
but also with the news media. Especially the
design feature we call the “retreat” and some
media began calling the “snore room.”
As you know if you have seen our new models,
the retreat (or so-called “snore room”) is an extra
room that is part of the master suite, separate
from the master bedroom but connected to it
through the master bath. Of course it is not only
a sleeping space for someone who snores or
needs to have the TV on all night; it is also a very
convenient space for reading, relaxation,
massage, exercise equipment, a hobby, or any
other activity requiring a cozy, comfortable
space. But the idea that it can also serve as a
“snore room” really caught on with the media
covering the new home industry. The following
are just a couple of examples of the coverage.
CBS in Los Angeles called the retreat/snore
room “a revolutionary residential feature.” And
said, “Del Webb offers prospective residents of
its new Sun City Shadow Hills development a
‘master retreat’ feature, a secondary bedroom
attached to the master suite through the
bathroom.”
the iew
Our new Californian plan is approximately 2,656 square feet
with three bedrooms, three baths, and popular design options.
Our New Designs Make the News
MSNBC.com contributor Jane Hodges wrote
a long story on the subject, pointing out
“Celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Katie
Holmes, and ‘Judge Judy’ Scheindlin and her
husband reportedly have snore rooms in their
homes.” She also said that Del Webb was a leader
in addressing this issue through its innovative
home designs. And she quoted our vice president
of strategic marketing, Andy Wong, who said,
“It’s not something for everybody. No one says,
‘I want another bedroom for my spouse.’ But
many say they wind up sleeping separately by the
end of the night, even though they start out in
bed together.”
The way we see it, when you live at a Del Webb
community, where there is so much lifestyle to
enjoy during the day, it is important to get a
good night’s sleep. If we can help some of our
buyers do that through innovative home design
we are really happy to do so.
And while our new designs got a lot great
coverage, and it is nice to get attention from the
media, ultimately our mission and our goal is to
meet the needs and exceed the expectations of
our home buyers. Those are the only “reviews”
we really care about.
See you soon!
On Wednesday, April 25, we
held our monthly tournament.
We played a single eight ball
format and had 16 players in
competition with a consolation flight for those
who lost their first match. First place was won by
Bryan Murray, and second place went to Gary
Hammer. The consolation flight was won by
Balta Rosales. Everyone played well and enjoyed
themselves. Congratulations to all our winners
and all who competed.
Our club continues to meet every Wednesday
at 7 pm in the Billiards Room for open play.
Tournaments are held the last Wednesday of
the month at a cost of $2 per player for each
tournament. You must be a club member to play
in the monthly tournaments.
Women and men of all levels of experience are
welcome and encouraged to join. It’s a great way
to make new friends and meet your neighbors!
Come to the Montecito Billiards Room on
Wednesday nights for open play. Lessons are
available at 10 am every Monday in the Billiards
No June blues at our club!
We do not go on hiatus for the
summer, so come stay cool with us
and make some art.
Member Alba enjoys using her creative talents
to draw and paint on various items. Sarelle kept
busy last month pouring many shapes of tea bag
holders, including pigs and cactus. She was giving
them as party favors at her special occasion
get-together with her family. Several members,
including Robert, were painting designs on
garden watering cans, so individual and unique.
Mark your calendars for the Harvest Festival,
which will be on November 3. The Ceramics
Club will once again coordinate that special
event. More information to come.
We meet at 9 am in the Montecito Clubhouse
on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Classy Niners
On April 10, the Women’s Golf
Club joined us for a wonderful
time playing nine holes of golf
followed by lunch at our Spring Par-Tee. Our
final event was a cocktail party held on May 1 to
celebrate a successful club year. The 2012/2013
Board was introduced. They are President Sue
McClure, Vice President Linda Doom, Treasurer
Cory Stevens, and Secretary Janet Peper. Planning
for the new year is already under way.
The club will continue to play golf throughout
the summer. The tee time will be 6:30 am with
Community Singers
Singers will be on break for the summer
months. We will be having our first
meeting on Monday, September 24, at
5 pm in the Montecito ballroom. We have a music-filled
season planned for 2012/2013.
The Community Singers 2012/2013 board is made up
of Sally Bozzo, President; Ken Hailpern, Vice-President;
Eileen Heckel, Secretary; Robin Zimmerman, Treasurer.
If you wish to get more information, please contact
President Sally Bozzo at sally@bozzo.net.
Our holiday program is scheduled for December 9; and
an exciting spring concert is scheduled for April 7, 2013.
Keep watching The View for new details.
Have a wonderful summer, and happy singing!
Computer Club
With the club unable to fill all of its
board positions to continue operating,
the Lifestyle team will step in to help keep
the exciting array of classes going on an as needed basis.
We filled all the officer slots except that of President.
Unfortunately, our HOA rules require a club to have a
president and we couldn’t find a volunteer to replace
Mike Nilsson, our “irreplaceable” president of three years.
He saved the club from extinction in 2009, bringing the
membership up from about 35 to the current 252.
Half of those 252 are Apple users who became members
as a direct result of Gary Mencimer’s dedication and
advanced Apple knowledge. He put on a ton of Apple
classes for people of all skill levels (including one 90-yearold
with an iPad!)
Dwight Carlson deserves a lot of credit for four years
of keeping track of pretty much everything and making
the club run like a finely tuned Swiss watch.
We look forward to seeing all of you in the fall and
watch for announcements and information on upcoming
classes.
Concerts 4U
Summer is just about here and things
have slowed down considerably. But . . .
Concerts 4U continues to entertain you
and plan for next season’s events. Sir Laffs A Lot is still
providing wonderful comedians for your entertainment.
The series tickets (with reserved seating) are on sale for
our 2012/2013 season.
Congratulations to the new board of Concerts 4U:
Cathie Riddle-Weiser, President; Barbara Dutton, Vice
President; Julie Johnston, Treasurer; and Judy Baker,
Secretary. A big thank you to our outstanding board who
led us through a fabulous year of entertainment. We are
confident that our new board will follow in their footsteps
and grow our club to bigger and better heights.
Thank you to everyone who made our year such a
success. We have a wonderful group of people who are
dedicated to bringing first-class entertainment to our
community. Please consider joining our great club. We
have a good time. Have a wonderful summer.
Couples Golf
What a great season for Couples Golf!
We held our last regularly scheduled golf
outing on Sunday, May 20. Of course we
dined after golf at The Shadows as usual. Our appreciation
to Dar and his crew for treating us sumptuously all year.
For the rest of the summer, Couples Golf will go
“informal.” You can make up your own groups and call
the Pro Shop for tee times. Check the Couples Golf
bulletin board in the Pro Shop for announcements.
As you may know, we held our annual election of new
year. They are Gloria Mossman as Membership Chair and
Discussion Forum
The Discussion Forum
presented many interesting
subjects for the 2011/2012
season; we started in September with a talk by
Dr. Bobbie Neustal and Dr. Margaret Ruley on
Health Care Choices. This was followed in
October by resident Jhan Schmidt with a
fascinating look at the Expansion of the Panama
Canal and the Cross-London Rail Link that were
projects of his company. In November, Kevin
Davis, CEO of the Independent News Network,
spoke on Investigative Journalism’s Last Stand;
and in December Dr. Eric Davenport gave a talk
on How to Achieve Health and Wellness.
January’s discussion was on travel given by
representatives from several travel companies.
This was followed in February by Dr. Nicole
Ortiz talking about the comparison between
Naturopathic and Conventional Medicine. In
March, Robert Brasier stepped in at the last
minute for a colleague who was unable to attend
and gave an insightful talk on the Palm Springs
Art Museum. Our April speaker, resident Harold
Williamson, gave a fascinating talk on the
Manhattan Project. Last month, Indio Mayor
Glenn Miller, a frequent visitor to SCSH,
discussed our City.
Games Plus
We are a club that has much to offer.
We have Bingo the first Friday of the
month held in the Montecito Ballroom.
June 3 will be the last until October; it is dark July,
August, and September. We start selling paper at 6 pm,
with games starting at 7 pm. We play 15 games. Two are
called special games where the prize money is greater;
these games cost $1 each. The other 13 games have pots
as high as $75 and sometimes more as the prizes are
based on the paper sold. The paper is $5 a pack. You will
have three chances at each of the 13 games. We sell
daubers should you forget to bring yours as well as snacks
and beverages.
Our club also has a dinner and games night. May was
our last for the season; we are dark June, July, August,
and September. Our menu is a complete dinner with
dessert and beverage. This event dinner is served and
our games start after you finish eating. The favorite is
Mexican Train but we also play Scrabble, Upword,
Sequence, and Rummikub. The cost is $10 per person.
Fill out the registration and place in the “Games Plus”
mailbox near the library along with a check.
The third event we offer is for our Scrabble lovers,
every Monday from 1 – 5:30 pm. We usually have the
Capistrano room. We have the games so come check it
out. You can also play Hand and Foot or Mah Jongg, or
bring a group and play something you like. It is a games
club.
If you have questions, please call or email Carol Dorler
at 760-953-3224 or prov356jcd@msn.com.
Kings and Queens Card Club
The Kings and Queens Poker Card
club is open for play throughout the
year. Can’t decide which club to spend
your evenings with at the clubhouse? Can’t decide
how to spend those long Tuesday nights when the
temperature goes down or up? It’s comfortable at the
clubhouse playing cards with the Kings and Queens
Poker Card Club.
Our club keeps on playing poker week after week.
We’re looking for new players as we welcome everyone
from Shadow Hills. The card games start every Tuesday
night at 6 pm. Men and women playing together just for
fun. Remember those Friday night poker games you had
as a kid when you played poker wild cards, high/low, five
card draw, and high spade in the hole? At the card club
we play poker games the same way you played as a kid in
your old neighborhood. It’s dealer’s choice no matter
what your favorite poker game may be. Is it Stud,
Texas Holdem, or just plain Jacks or better? We’re here
to have fun.
For information call Ben Weissbach at 760-702-7159.
Lady Putters
In May, we held our fourth and final
Business Meeting for the year and our
End of the Year Luncheon. We
welcomed our new Board members and
our new Committee Chairs while giving a big round of
appreciation to the Board and Chairs who led the club
during the 2011/2012 club year. We also said goodbye
to many good friends who will soon be leaving for cooler
climates – and wished them well until we meet again on
the green.
Lady Putters continues to meet and putt during the
summer. Putting sessions and times change depending
on the temperatures. Check our website (shputters.com)
for current times.
Lady Putters meet every Monday morning in the
Capistrano Room in the Montecito Clubhouse and putt
on the practice green behind the clubhouse. Look for us
in our blue and white attire.
For more information about Lady Putters and our
events, see our website shputters.com. Our event
schedule and putting times are shown on the website.
We invite all gals to come and visit us. Annual
membership dues are $15, plus the cost of a logo shirt.
All you need is a putter, a ball, $2, and the desire to meet
new friends and have a fun time. Please note that we
adhere to standard golf dress codes (no jeans). No golf
spikes, please.
No experience is necessary. We are a fun and friendly
group. If you have questions, please call Ellen Owens at
760-775-6204 or Maureen Whittaker at 760-342-1260,
or email us at scshladyputters@gmail.com.
Lively Liners
Swaying palm trees, lots of
sand . . . you’re at the beach,
right? Wrong! You’re still in the
desert at the Lively Liners Club “no frills” beach
party. Join us on Saturday, June 9, from
6 – 8:45 pm, in the air-conditioned Montecito
Clubhouse ballroom for an evening of socializing
and dancing to music for couples and line dancers.
“No frills” means bring your own beverages and
snacks, dress casually and, ladies, please wear
appropriate shoes (no open backs or mules).
Unlike many clubs at Shadow Hills, the Lively
Liners do not go dark for the summer so, long
after the “snow birds” have flown the coop, we
will be grape-vining, stomping and kicking up
our heels at beginner, intermediate, and
advanced line dance classes. (Check the fitness
schedule in this issue of The View for exact times
and days.)
Line dancing is an aerobically stimulating and
socially rewarding experience, and we invite all
you singles and couples out there to join in the
fun. The new fiscal year begins July 1, and dues
are only $15 a year. There is also a $10 monthly
fee, which you pay only for the months you are
in residence and plan to attend classes. For more
information, call Barbara at 760-636-0701.
Mah Jongg
Our Mah Jongg Club is in full
swing. The best place to be is in
the clubhouse every Wednesday
from 12:30 – 3:30 pm. Our Mah Jongg lessons
continue; if you are interested, please call Babs
Bloomgarden at 760-393-2056. The lessons are
from 10 am – 12 pm on Wednesday before our
regular game. Most of our snowbirds have left for
the season, so it’s a good time get acquainted
with the “locals” for a game with someone you
have never had a chance to play with before. FYI:
The air conditioning system in our Maj room
does not work for everyone’s comfort, so it’s a
good idea to bring a light sweater and a little
hand fan so we can all be satisfied.
See you next month.
Men’s Club Golf
Lonnie Leeds has put together
a great Summer Mondays schedule
for us this year. Dates of play
and courses are: 6/11, Monterey CC; 6/18,
Westin Gary Player; 7/2, La Quinta Mountain;
7/16, Silverrock; 7/30, PGA Nicklaus Private;
8/13, La Quinta Dunes; 8/27, Classic Club;
9/10, Bermuda Dunes; and 9/24, Avondale.
The cost is $45 to $50 per outing including
lunch. Sign-up sheets are located on the bulletin
board at the Pro Shop.
There is still plenty of golf to be played on
Thursdays during the summer, so come on out
and join the fun. The club plays competitive golf
every Thursday morning. If you are interested in
joining a fun-loving, competitive golfing group,
you may contact the Membership Chairman,
Pete Anderson, at 760-469-2086.
Oke Dokey Karaoke
Our final Oke Dokey Karaoke
session of the season takes place
Thursday, June 14, from 5 – 8 pm
in the front half of the Montecito ballroom. We’ll
celebrate Flag Day with a couple of patriotic
songs and also sing our favorites. Even if you
have never been to Karaoke before, come to
listen, sing, or dance. You might discover a new
interest in addition to meeting and socializing
with your neighbors. BYOB and snacks. We look
to seeing you on June 14!
We will go dark for the summer and look
forward to seeing you in the fall on Thursday,
October 25. For further information, please call
Lynn Trahan, club President, at 760-393-2390.
Opera Club
The Opera Club will meet on
Wednesday, June 6, at 6 pm for
its final gathering of the 2011/
2012 season.
This month we will learn about, and then view,
La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker) by Vincenzo
Bellini. It is an opera semiseria (semi-serious) in
two acts, with music in the bel canto style. Set in a Swiss
village, where preparations are underway for the wedding
of Elvino and Amina, this story deals with jealousy, lies,
and a “village ghost” who haunts the town – who turns
out to be our innocent sleepwalker.
The Opera Club will be “dark” in July and August, and
will be meeting on the second Tuesday of each month
when we return. Our first meeting of the 2012/2013
season will be on Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
Paddle Tennis Club
We have a new chartered Paddle
Tennis Club in SCSH. Currently we play
every Sunday morning at 9 am on the
pickleball courts at the Santa Rosa Clubhouse.
As the club grows and we learn what our members
want, we will be adding more days to the schedule.
This is a great sport for tennis and table tennis players,
too; it is fun and gives us a good workout. It has the feel
of tennis, but it is played on a much smaller court. The
pickleball courts are shorter than the regulation paddle
tennis courts, but we are making it work for now.
We have asked the HOA Board to fence the sports
court at the Santa Rosa. In addition we need to add
striping for paddle tennis, possibly in a different color so
that it can still be used by pickleball and basketball
players. This, of course, costs money; and we have to see
what we can do to make it happen soon.
For more information, contact John at 714-743-9018.
Pairs 9-Hole Golf Club
We are the new Pairs 9-Hole Golf
Club. Our club’s mission is to share the
love of golf in a social, friendly way. We
will be playing on the North Course. We have a fun
lineup of games and events planned. Our club does not
require handicaps and is designed to provide golf for
those who wish to have a relaxed, fun game.
We encourage people to join by pairing up with a
friend, be it two singles or couples. The new Bistro in
Phase 3 is open, and we hope we will be able to get
together there for many events. Our summer playing
time will be at 7:30 am, and we will still be playing on
the second and fourth Thursday of the month, EXCEPT
FOR JUNE. We will be using a shotgun format.
Membership dues are $10 per person and are payable in
June or when you return to the Valley. The club year for
all chartered clubs begins on July 1.
All new and returning golfers to SCSH are welcome to
join. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Pro Shop. Please
sign up by 3 pm on the Tuesday before we play. Again,
our games will be at 2:30 pm on June 7 and 21. We are
changing our time due to the golf course aerification.
Please sign in by 7 am.
For new members, applications can be found in our
drawer at the Pro Shop on the South Course. Please put
the completed applications in our mailbox at the
Montecito Clubhouse or in our drawer at the Pro Shop.
For more information about our new Sun City
Pan
Let’s play Pan! Come join us in the
Capistrano room at the Montecito
Clubhouse Mondays at 6:30 pm and on
Thursdays at noon.
We welcome all new residents to come on by and say
hello; we would love to meet you. We have established
permanent games on Monday nights and are taking
names for regulars and fill-ins. Bring your house games
to the clubhouse and become part of the Pan Club. As
we get into summer, come on by and play with us as
some of the regulars will be gone during the hotter
months.
If you want to learn to play Pan, Beatrice Hersh will
be giving instructions to new players and she would love
to hear from you. Beatrice’s cell phone number is
2012/2013 season with either potluck or
supplied dinners and a variety of guest speakers.
For more information or suggestions for club
activities, call Bob Sielski at 760-200-3193 or
email rsielski@verizon.net for details.
The Pet Club wants to remind all dog owners
that the dog park is appropriate only for dogs
that play well with other dogs and don’t bully
others. This may be a matter of judgment but, if
there is a question, talk to other dog owners in
the park. If they feel that your animal is too
aggressive, you should not use that facility.
When using the dog park, be considerate of our
neighbors and keep barking by dogs and owners
to a minimum.
Pickleball
First, let me thank our
founding Board Janice
Volkenant, Gary Kyler, and Barb
to a great season next year.
Second, the Pickleball Club is active this
summer! We have drop-ins for members on
Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7 – 9 am and
Rainbow Friends
Our last meeting of the year
was May 21. We elected our new
slate of officers and began making
plans for next year. We’ve gone dark until the fall
but have some really exciting events planned for
next season including trips, dinners, and a dance
in November.
We’re a social group for our gay and lesbian
residents and their friends and family, and we’re
always looking for more folks to come and join
us. We plan to have lots of new activities during
the upcoming season, and you don’t want to miss
the fun. Dues are $10 per year, and we’d love to
see you at our next meeting.
Readers Ink
Summer heat has arrived in the
desert, but members of Readers
Ink stay cool by staying indoors
and reading! We meet each fourth Tuesday to
discuss our monthly selection, and for June it is
Stephen King’s monumental novel, 11/22/63.
On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy
was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas, and the world
changed. In 2011, in Lisbon Falls, Maine, Al Templeton
(who is the owner of a diner which is about to close and
who is gravely ill) reveals that his storeroom is a portal
to the past, to a particular day in 1958. He enlists Jake
Epping, a burned-out high school teacher, to take on a
mission which had become Al’s obsession: stop Lee
Harvey Oswald and prevent the Kennedy assassination,
correct the past, and undo some of the evils of the 20th
century. Once back in the past, however, Epping is
confronted with what really happened back then and
what the present might be if past events had not
occurred. The book jacket notes, “Time-travel has never
been so believable. Or so terrifying.”
Historical fiction is one of – if not the – favorite genres
of Readers Ink members, and we look forward to
discussing this book at our meeting. Why not join us on
June 26? (But you’d better start reading it the moment
you read this, because the novel contains 849 pages!)
Retirement Club
Our last meeting for the season was
on April 26. We had a very informative
presentation by Ross Winn, a tax attorney.
He discussed some of the problems and solutions that
surviving spouses face after the first spouse initiates the
estate plan (known as kicking the bucket).
Life insurance proceeds are a major financial resource
upon the death of a spouse. Retirees should be aware that
some insurance companies now put the proceeds into
money market accounts and mail the beneficiaries a
checkbook. Insurance companies increasingly are sending
out checkbooks rather than checks; the checkbook
provides the beneficiary with access to the proceeds
through low interest-bearing accounts. Agents may start
calling at a time when the beneficiary is in an unstable
emotional state and can be persuaded pretty easily. Those
agents may want the beneficiaries to make decisions that
should be deferred.
A major insurance company recently settled a complaint
with a group of state insurance commissioners. The
company was required to pay around $700 million to
beneficiaries for death benefits the company was holding
because the beneficiaries could not be found. It was
revealed that the insurance company had no trouble stopping
payments on the death of people holding annuities.
RV Club
In April our club’s trip was to the Fort
McDowell RV Resort in Fountain Hills,
AZ, just outside Scottsdale. Charlotte and
Bert Emert were the Wagonmasters and did of great job
of planning the trip. The first night the Emerts provided
pulled beef sandwiches, and other members provided
appetizers. We all participated in activities including
golfing, shopping, and exploring the area. One day we
took a boat tour on Lake Saguaro. For our dinner night,
Bert and Mike Bozzo grilled tri-tips, and other members
provided entrees. We ended the trip with a group of us
going to Phil’s Filling Station Grill in Fountain Hills. An
unexpected surprise was a herd of wild horses that would
show up daily in the desert area across from the resort.
At our April Meeting, the club elected new Officers for
the 2012/2113 Year. The new Board is: John Taylor,
President; Jill Thomas, Vice President; Bert Emert,
Treasurer; Sammee Zeile, Secretary. Congratulations, and
we look forward to a great year under their leadership.
We’re still planning our May trip to Rancho California.
We will close out the year in Newport Beach at the
Newport Dunes RV.
The SCSHRV Club meets every third Wednesday of
the month at 5 pm in the Mirada room. For further
information on the club activities, contact Tom Thomas
at 760-342-3282 or email: stuffinskis@ earthlink.net.
Solos
The SCSH Solos Club, now
in its seventh year, is a social club
for single Shadow Hills residents.
We hold a general/social meeting on the third
Sunday of the month in the Capistrano Room of
the Montecito Clubhouse at 5 pm as well as two
other ongoing monthly activities – a first of
the month Sunday lunch and a Mystery Happy
Hour hosted by one of our members at a nearby
restaurant.
Every Friday evening between 4:30 and 6 pm
our members meet at the Shadows Restaurant to
socialize over a drink.
Our year runs from July 1 through June 30 with
annual dues of $10. Membership applications,
Stitchin’ & Stampin’
“Shirts for Life” is what
Vickie Dinkin of the Stitchin’
group calls her custom-made
memorial shirts. Recently, Linda Sage, the wife
the iew
of deceased Marvin Sage, ordered a shirt made
by Vicki in memory of her husband, who was a
teacher and a golfer. Pieces of his golf shirts and
T-shirts were made into quilt squares with
embroidered symbols of his career and hobbies
on the squares. Then these squares were made
into a quilt. What a clever idea! Currently, Vicki
is working on a memorial quilt for a man who
was best remembered as a grandfather. His plaid
flannel shirts and T-shirts record memories of
grandpa.
Ladies, it is dues time again. Please fill out a
membership form and attach a check or cash of
$10 and drop them in an envelope into the
Stitchin’ & Stampin’ mailbox or give them to
Treasurer Vickie Dinkin.
Membership forms are on the clipboard where
we have our membership roster.
Stampers have been making animal birthday
cards recently, and we learned a technique of
using wax paper and stressed inks to create an
antiqued paper look. Various members have
taught a different kind of card each week to the
rest of the group. Martha Horner is a great
teacher, but this way she can take an occasional
break.
Come join either group on Mondays at 12:30 pm
at the Montecito Clubhouse in the Cambria or
Mirada rooms across from the restrooms. Some
quilters also meet on Wednesday mornings at
9:30 am.
Table Tennis Club
The Table Tennis Club meets
at the Santa Rosa Clubhouse. We
have two rooms: the Newport and
the Pismo.
New members are welcome to join us. You may
play twice before joining if you would like to
check it out. Membership is $15 per year. You
need to wear comfortable clothing and proper
gym shoes. No sandals.
We play four days a week: Wednesday,
12 – 2:30 pm; Saturday, 12 – 2 pm; and Friday
and Sunday, 3 – 6 pm. Come join us at the new
location. It is a good workout for mind and body.
That’s Entertainment Club
That’s Entertainment Club will hold
a New York-style reunion social with all
the trimmings of food and entertainment
of the 40s, 50s, and 60s in October. High schools,
neighborhoods, and NY street games (stick ball) will be
the theme. Also how about a NY Egg Cream and a
Yankee Doodle? If you’re an ex-New Yorker or would
like to attend such a function, please email me your
email address so you can be informed as we get closer to
the event.
The club also sold many tickets in March to the Follies,
and residents at Shadow Hills had a wonderful time at a
reduced price. If you would like to be put on a list for
next year for advanced tickets, you will be notified of the
dates for matinee or evening when the club finds out.
Please send an email for either event to Ben Weissbach
at ben11169@dc.rr.com. If there are other major events
of interest you would like the club to pursue for group
discounts, please reply as well.
There are no meetings this summer. Our next meeting
will be October 24 at 4 pm in the Cambria room. Our
plan a river cruise in Europe in the spring and a trip to
Cuba in October.
Ukulele Strummers
And so the season has come to
an end. The “winter folks” have
headed north, the streets are
getting quiet, and the Ukulele Strummers have
gone dark until September. Well, we really don’t
go silent. We’ll jam on through the heat of the
summer on a drop-in basis.
I would like to thank the outgoing
administration for their hard work and
dedication. Through last year our group grew;
new songs were added; and YES, we’ve
automated. Our handy computer now displays
well over 300 songs on a gigantic screen. You can
access the music to practice or just have fun,
wherever you have a computer and the Internet.
Some things don’t change, thank goodness.
Our wonderful Ann Olsen is taking a welldeserved
rest. In September she will be in her
familiar place each Thursday from noon – 1 pm.
Then the entire group joins in and we rock the
house with songs from the 20s, 30s, and 40s
right up to rockin’ music of the Eagles, Dylan,
and so many others. Of course we’ll never forget
hip-swingin’ Hawaiian music.
We invite everyone to drop in (you don’t need
an invitation, just sit down, pick up a loaner uke
or just sing along, at the top your lungs, what
great therapy that is). So put us on your calendar,
jump in, and LET THE FUN BEGIN.
Veterans Club
Unlike many veterans groups,
this club is not about rehashing
war experiences. Our club is about
assisting members and their spouses as well as all
our neighbors. We sponsor speakers to make
veterans aware of the many benefits they have
earned while serving their country. The club has
also established a reference file with the many
agencies that deal with the elderly, including
veterans.
The club provides many services to the SCSH
community: Veterans Day in the fall; a highly
the iew
successful Toys-For-Tots drive to begin winter;
and our Memorial Day flagraising ceremony in
the spring – providing recognition to those who
have served.
The flag display in the lobby of the Montecito
Clubhouse is courtesy of our club. We also offer
US flag disposal for worn flags as well as the sale
of new flags. And finally, we offer an e-newsletter
to our members with the latest information
concerning veterans and club happenings,
making this newsletter a “must have.”
Our meetings are on the third Tuesday of the
month. Our next meeting will be on June 19 at
7 pm. Hope to see you there – God Bless
America!
Writer’s Club
The purpose of our Writer’s Club is
to encourage each other to write on a
regular basis. It does not matter if you are
writing for therapy or you have ambitions to have
your work published, all are welcome to try their hand.
Fiction, non-fiction, autobiographies, memoirs,
screenplays, it does not matter what you are writing; we
are interested in your work. Write a page a day for a year
and you have a book!
Try your hand at writing that story you have always
wanted to tell. Each meeting we ask that you bring along
two – three pages of something you have written to read
to our group and we critique it (gently), offering ideas
and sometimes direction.
We discuss different aspects of writing drawn from
articles and websites. We will look at different avenues of
getting our writing in front of a wider audience: blogs,
self-publishing, and competitions.
The Writer’s Club meets twice a month on Thursdays
in the Santa Rosa Clubhouse; and we are the only free
club in SCSH, no membership dues.
For more information call Tony at 760-775-9521 or
email antiqphoto@gmail.com. The meeting dates in
June are on the 7th and 21st in the Santa Rosa
Resident Groups
Democrats
The Democrats of SCSH will not
hold monthly meetings in June, July, or
August on our usual fourth Wednesday
of the month but will resume meetings
on Wednesday, September 26. Mark your
calendars and join us for a welcome-back potluck
and then view an enlightening documentary with us
about how politics is funded – and controlled – by some
super-rich donors.
If you are a Democrat, or a “no party preference”
(formerly “decline-to-state”) voter, and would like to be
added to our email list for news updates and announcements
of progressive activities, please send an email to
carol.wilson@yahoo.com. The Democrats of SCSH was
established for registered Democrats to meet, learn, and
share common goals. For other information, you may
contact President Stacia Armstrong at 760-469-3995.
Republicans
Sun City Shadow Hills Republicans
met on Thursday, May 10, in the
Montecito Clubhouse. Our special guest
speakers were Mayor Glenn Miller and Corky Emett,
candidate for the 56th Assembly District. Mayor Miller
discussed current Indio finances and how they affect
our services. Ms. Emett discussed issues relevant to her
campaign for election to the California Assembly.
Our group is aggressively pursuing its voter registration
drive. Look for our voter registration booths around the
community. A registration booth was manned at the
April 28th parking lot sale as well as in the Montecito
Clubhouse on May 4. We will be happy to assist you with
your registration regardless of your party affiliation. In
these times, voting is not only a right but an obligation.
In these perilous times, it is important that everyone not
only register, but get out and vote.
