New Mexico Arts serves as the official arts council for the State of New Mexico, administering<br />

arts services contracts on behalf of the state, promoting economic development initiatives,<br />

arts education, quality of life through arts, health and social services, and the celebration<br />

and conservation of the arts and culture of New Mexico. the Art in Public Places program<br />

administers the 1% for art program, placing public art in state buildings and among communities<br />

in all 33 counties. New Mexico Arts provides technical assistance and services to constituents,<br />

encouraging the growth and development of artists and arts groups statewide. the division<br />

is also home for the New Mexico Music commission, established by the Governor through<br />

executive order in 2005 to celebrate New Mexico’s rich musical traditions and further develop<br />

and promote the state’s vibrant music industry.<br />

As the guardian of our State's legacy, the historic Preservation division identifies, preserves<br />

and encourages the restoration and reuse of New Mexico's archaeological and historical<br />

resources. the division manages the State Register of cultural Properties, which is the<br />

official list of historic properties worthy of preservation in New Mexico and the information<br />

is open to the public by appointment. listing in the State Register provides recognition of<br />

important prehistoric and historic, assists in preserving New Mexico’s rich cultural heritage.<br />

Resources of historic, archaeological, architectural, engineering, cultural or scientific<br />

significance are eligible to be listed in the State Register of cultural Properties. Buildings,<br />

commercial, residential and archaeological districts, puebloan sites, bridges, roads, trails and<br />

neon signs are listed in New Mexico’s Register. hundreds of properties from the Barelas/<br />

Fourth St. Neighborhood in Bernalillo county to the Georgia o’keeffe home and Studio in<br />

Rio Arriba county to the clayton Public library in Union county are listed on the Register.<br />

it also monitors State and Federal projects that impact our historic sites, provides technical<br />

assistance to individuals and organizations, cares for the highway historic Marker Program<br />

and administers loans and grants for historic projects.
