Dr. Michael Schaefer
AMBASSADOR OF THE
FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY IN CHINA
Beijing, November 2012
Dear Reader,
in October 2012, Germany and China celebrated the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Today,
our countries enjoy a long-term strategic partnership which extends into all major sectors of our
societies. Our political relations are strong, they are built on trust and mutual interest. Our second
German-Chinese Intergovernmental Consultations in August 2012 and the opening of our 5th German
Consulate in Shenyang/Liaoning have highlighted this close and deep cooperation in a very symbolic
yet also practical way. Our economies are the most important for each other in Asia and in Europe.
And our cultural exchange has grown dynamically over the past few years as well. Today, we can say
without exaggeration: our bilateral relations have never been better before.
It is always people, who are the backbone of such a partnership; people, who have experienced
both countries’ culture, tradition and value system, people, who are building bridges for mutual trust
and understanding. This is why we want to engage more and more young people on both sides. As
China will be one of the important global players in the 21st century, young Germans need to acquaint
themselves with Chinese culture, language and business environment.
As early as 1996, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) started to organize the
program “Language and Professional Training in China“. The program combines business oriented
language training with professional experience to prepare outstanding German graduates and young
professionals for their careers in China. Scholarship holders receive first-class Chinese language
training at the renowned Beijing Foreign Studies University. Field trips, seminars and meetings with
local Chinese and German institutions and companies complement the program, which has proved
to be very successful.
This year’s participants again represent a great range of academic backgrounds covering business
management, law, economics, international relations, physics, architecture, chemistry and psychology.
Graduates of this outstanding program will qualify for leadership and management positions in German
or Chinese companies, especially for cross-cultural interface functions. The career development of
the program’s alumni over the last 16 years is prove of the success of “Language and Professional
Training in China“. I am confident that the participants of this program will continue to contribute
successfully to the further development of our Sino–German relations.
I wish all participants best of luck and success for their future careers.
“LANGUAGE AND PROFESSIONAL TRAINING IN CHINA“
Beijing, November 2012
Dear Reader,
On the following pages you will find the portraits of ten excellent German graduates currently
participating in the DAAD scholarship program “Language and Professional Training in
China” sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
It has been my pleasure to accompany the scholarship holders ever since their arrival in
Beijing in automn of 2012: to support their intense studies of the Chinese language at the
Beijing Foreign Studies University and to provide them with first- hand insight into the existing
Sino-German relations and businesses. Through our DAAD alumni network we have unique
access to enterprises and institutions, enabling us to regularly organize company visits, on
site meetings and high level discussions between distinguished experts and the participants
in order to enhance their knowledge of the specific working environment and the overall
economic and social situation in China.
Furthermore, we aim to strengthen their ability to successfully handle cultural and interpersonal
aspects and promote these competences by enhancing personal exchange and cross cultural
experiences and by providing a mentoring scheme.
Characterized by their outstanding academic performance and inert interest in China
the participants of this scholarship program are currently looking for the most promising
opportunities the professional world has to offer.
I personally wish them all the best for their time in China and beyond!
“Language and Professional Training“: business leaders for the Chinese market
The program “Language and Professional Training” was launched 25 years ago, initially
with focus only on Japan, from 1996 on also with focus on China. Its main goal is to
qualify outstanding German graduates for leading positions in the Sino-German business
environment. Because of their acquired language skills, specific and intercultural knowledge,
the graduates of the program are able to meet the demand for highly qualified staff of Chinese
or German enterprises. Every year, the DAAD selects up to 10 participants from the fields
of natural science, engineering, law, economics, social sciences and architecture in a highly
competitive selection process. During the period of 16 months, the successful candidates will
be able to get a clear picture of the challenges and chances of living and working in China
through intensive language training and professional training.
Structure of “Language and Professional Training”
The program starts with a three-weeks preparatory language course which is held at the
SINICUM in Bochum. The following 10-month intensive language course (September – June)
is provided by the Beijing Foreign Studies University, one of the most renowned schools
for teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Participants are taught Everyday Chinese and
Business Chinese with course materials which are tailor-made for the needs of European
students. Besides attending the language courses, the participants are offered an
accompanying program of company visits, seminars and lectures, organized by the DAAD
branch office Beijing. Another important part of “Language and Professional Training” is a
oneweek study trip to Shanghai. Finally, the participants undergo a six-month professional
training period (July to December) in German, Chinese, or international companies or
institutions of their choice. The current scholarship holders can now fall back on a tight
network of program alumni in key positions in companies around China.
