From the infants first cry to our last moments, our life
is but a series of breaths. We begin from that first
breath nourishing the body and mind. As we embark
on this journey of life, there is not a second that goes
by that we are not constantly bringing in that
nourishment. Unfortunately our breath is under
constant strain as we drain our life force and pranic
energy by our thinking, acting, fast paced life and
diet. This all plays a indirect and direct role, affecting
our physiological processes in the body.
The way we think and stress are a big culprit that
affect the way we breathe. When we stress we raise
levels of the hormone cortisol in the body. This has
a direct impact on our breathing, immune system etc.
The sympathetic nervous system is affected, directly
affecting the performance of the diagphram. When
we are tight in this area we see the diagphram
contracting tighter not allowing the diagphram to
expand fully to bring in a fuller breathe to help
maintain a healthy level of oxygen for the body and
brain.
Yogic breathing taught in classes has a instant impact
on us the moment we take that first class and learn to
breathe deeply into the stomach. Women are taught
such exercises to help alleviate some of the pain in
childbirth. So why is it we don't pay attention to our
daily breathing. As humans we tend to get by with
the least amount of effort and this definitely applies
to our breathing. It is as easy as taking a few moments
aside when your day seems overwhelming, finding a
nice quite place and listen to your breath. Just
recognizing the breath enter and exit the body can
bring your mind to that one point, letting everything
else in your day dissapear even if it is for that second.
It is that second we build on and we start to see what
that one breath can do. It can take away the mind for
a split second leaving the mind in peace. Something
we neglect to do is quite and relax the mind. It needs
rest as the body does.
to recognize the breath in, as the breath in and the
breath out, as the breath out. Inhale into the belly and
exhale drawing the belly inwards. Try and make each
breath 6 seconds. Three to inhale and three to exhale.
When the mind steers you from the direction of the
breath with some random thought.....recognize that
you have wandered and bring your focus back to your
breath and the the mental discourse will just stop.
As we are able to focus more on the breath, it
improves. Our daily breathing becomes more efficient
as we become more conscious of the breath and our
overall wellbeing is improved. The next time you feel
a little runned down or stressed out, take some time
aside to check in on your breathing. Simply
recognizing your breath can have a powerful impact
on your life.
