<strong>Road</strong> Safety<br />
In 2002 there were around 39,000 deaths and 600,000 serious <strong>in</strong>juries on the roads of the orig<strong>in</strong>al 15 EU<br />
member states (EU15) and another 11,000 road deaths <strong>in</strong> the 10 new EU member states. Safety levels vary<br />
widely across <strong>Europe</strong> (see Figure 2.3). While the number of deaths <strong>in</strong> EU15 countries has on average decreased<br />
by 2% <strong>in</strong> 2002 compared to 2001, the number <strong>in</strong> the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 10 countries has <strong>in</strong>creased by 5%. Improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
road safety is generally seen as a high priority and many countries have set targets for reduc<strong>in</strong>g the number<br />
of deaths and serious <strong>in</strong>juries. The <strong>Europe</strong>an Commission is committed to a 50% reduction <strong>in</strong> road deaths by<br />
2010, compared to 2000.<br />
