Design and Production Systems<br />

Developments <strong>in</strong> Infrastructure Provision<br />

■ Develop novel methods of fast construction that m<strong>in</strong>imise energy consumption and damage to the environment.<br />

■ Develop <strong>in</strong>novative construction methods for reliev<strong>in</strong>g congestion "hot spots".<br />

Develop an understand<strong>in</strong>g of how capacity can be optimised over the life of the <strong>in</strong>frastructure by selection of<br />

appropriate ma<strong>in</strong>tenance strategies.<br />

■ Obta<strong>in</strong> a better understand<strong>in</strong>g of the physical processes that cause deterioration and determ<strong>in</strong>e how these can be<br />

monitored and controlled.<br />

■ Develop improved ma<strong>in</strong>tenance techniques that are economically viable, have a longer life and can be applied<br />

quickly under all weather conditions.<br />

Develop methods than can be used to undertake a more comprehensive appraisal of susta<strong>in</strong>able performance so<br />

that better <strong>in</strong>puts <strong>in</strong>to whole-life cost models can be used.<br />

Developments <strong>in</strong> Sensor Technology for Operation and Management of<br />

the Network<br />

■ Develop systems for real-time condition monitor<strong>in</strong>g of roads and structures which enable their physical condition<br />

and the loads and temperatures to which they are subjected to be recorded.<br />

■ Develop methods for us<strong>in</strong>g the output from monitor<strong>in</strong>g systems to control the load<strong>in</strong>g on roads and structures.<br />

Understand how sensors <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> vehicles can be used to provide <strong>in</strong>formation on the condition of the road.<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>e how new technologies such as remote methods for monitor<strong>in</strong>g the network (eg satellite images, laser<br />

scann<strong>in</strong>g) can be used to provide <strong>in</strong>formation on the condition of the network - both static (road geometry) and<br />

dynamic (temperatures, movements) - that is of value to the road operator.<br />

● Develop systems that allow communication between vehicles and the road operator which give <strong>in</strong>formation on<br />

conditions on the network (wet/dry, temperature) and location (road pric<strong>in</strong>g, congestion).<br />
