Teachers not eligible for a Florida Professional Certificate<br />

or students working toward temporary certification<br />

are considered to be in the initial certification<br />

option. To ensure that teachers of the exceptional student<br />

are certifiable in special education, they are required<br />

to complete five elementary education courses<br />

at <strong>Barry</strong> <strong>University</strong>, as well as the methods courses<br />

designated in the Exceptional Student Education Program/Specialization.<br />

The five courses are as follows:<br />

EDU 551 Problem Solving in Elementary<br />

School Mathematics<br />

EDU 567 Foundations of Reading Instruction<br />

EDU 568 Reading in the Content Areas<br />

EDU 584 Reading Diagnosis<br />

Please note that some of these courses also have a required<br />

field experience component.<br />

ADDITIONAL SPECIALIZATION PROGRAMS:<br />

The Gifted Education Master of Science is designed<br />

specifically for teachers who are already certified in<br />

education. Students enrolling in this program must<br />

present proof of teaching certificate. This program does<br />

not include the ESOL endorsement, nor does it lead to<br />

Florida certification.<br />

Possible electives include working with students<br />

with dual exceptionalities (e.g., students with gifts/talents<br />

and specific learning disabilities), advanced curriculum,<br />

and grant writing. Other electives should be<br />

in the area of instructional technology.<br />

In addition to the above, students in the M.S. program<br />

must graduate with the additional requisite of 15<br />

semester hours, minimum, in an area appropriate for<br />

working with gifted students (e.g., the sciences, the<br />

arts). These requisite hours can be part of a bachelor’s<br />

degree, or they can be completed while taking M.S.<br />

degree courses. The specialization must be approved<br />

by the Program Director.<br />
