Dear industry
Colleague,
Operators are consistently
telling us the three key things
on their minds are; Cost -
most notably fuel; Credit - or
the lack of it from banks; and
Compliance – the mounting
cost of meeting legislation demands. At MAN we focus
very closely on these elements and have a number of
ways to help. On the matter of Cost, we have the most
economical tractor on the market (see page 24) and a
proven cost-saving driver/vehicle performance monitoring
system – MAN EcoStyle. As to Credit, MAN Financial
Services continues to support MAN operators with a
variety of acquisition formats. While we are actively
cutting the costs of Compliance, through our Up Time
Principle and competitive R&M packages. There’s never
been a better time to invest in MAN trucks, and we are
always ready to talk to you.
India’s growing market
MAN pushes ahead with CLA series
A busy street in India: The country is a future growth market for
MAN Truck & Bus and its robust CLA series (large picture).
MAN is planning long-term investment in its new subsidiary with a
view to increasing its market share in India, a country experiencing
strong growth. MAN Truck & Bus CEO Dr Georg Pachta-Reyhofen
says: “We have benefitted enormously from our partnership with
Force Motors. Its expertise, market knowledge and established
working relationships with local suppliers were invaluable in the
initial phases. We now want to continue building up the business
on our own.”
Top results for 2011
A new record: Revenue up 19 percent
No wonder the management team are beaming: At the annual press conference in
mid-February CEO Dr Georg Pachta-Reyhofen (second from right) had some very
good news and impressive figures to announce. In 2011 global commercial vehicle
sales rose to €12.6 billion, a 19 percent increase on 2010. The total number of trucks
and buses sold was 155,520, boosting profits by 7.7 percent. Another success was the
increase in MAN’s share of the market in trucks over six tonnes: MAN now controls
around 18 percent of the European market, putting it in second place. It is the market
leader in Brazil, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Croatia.

TGX carries biathletes
The German biathletes led by Olympic medallist
Magdalena Neuner have found a reliable new
partner in the MAN TGX 18.400. The truck acts as a
service vehicle for biathletes, accompanying them on
their travels during world championships. A major
advantage of the 400 hp TGX semi-trailer truck is the
incorporation of MAN HydroDrive ® , which guarantees
excellent traction in extreme weather. The truck can
covered with ice and snow.
MAN Latin America
Leading the way in Brazil
MAN Latin America is leading the Brazilian market with a share of 30 percent. In 2011 the
commercial vehicle manufacturer sold around 51,000 trucks there, making it the most
successful producer of trucks over five tonnes for the ninth year running. In early 2012,
Brazil imposed strict environmental requirements stipulating that all new vehicles be
fitted with Euro 5 engines. MAN Latin America is also extending its product range to
include high-performance MAN trucks with over 400 hp. Brazil is one of the highest
growth markets outside Europe. With around 7,000 employees in the country, MAN is able
to make up to 82,000 trucks each year. It is planning to invest around €400 million in
South America over the next four years in order to
increase its production capacity and expand its
research and development activities.
heavy construction materials.
Dubai has been posting impressive economic growth for several years
now. The city on the Arabian Peninsula is growing at a breath-taking
rate and has experienced an unparalleled construction boom, with
skyscrapers shooting up out of the ground in quick succession. This
development has also benefitted MAN. Its TGS WWs and TGMs –
A hit on the Web
MAN’s fan community on the video-sharing website YouTube
is growing, with the number of hits increasing to around
14,400 each day. Videos showing the new types of
technology are particularly popular. One clip about MAN
HydroDrive ® has notched up an incredible 500,000 hits. A
recent survey showed that 91.1 percent of users became
aware of the videos via MAN’s Facebook page.
In the big top
Circus Krone provides for all the family. Transporting artistes,
animals and equipment is also quite a performance. Now seven
MAN TGXs are keeping the circus on the move.
Just-in-time
their trucks ready
for the journey to
the next venue.
World-famous Circus Krone has been
thrilling audiences for decades with its unique mix of
hilarious clowns and daring trapeze artists, magnificent
elephants and fierce lions, skilful jugglers and brave animal
trainers, adept knife-throwers and amazing magicians. The
spectacular shows where one fantastic act follows another
keep children and their parents in a breath-taking whirl of
astonishment and laughter, exhilaration and glee. But after
the applause dies down and the 4,500 spectators leave the
big top, 60 hardworking assistants leap out from behind the
scenes. They quickly pack up the big top while the artistes
are removing their makeup, and within three hours they are
ready to roll. Even some members of the troupe slip out of
their spangly costumes and don normal working dress to
help out. One important task, for example, is to take the
animals directly from the circus ring to their vans ready for
transportation.
Circus Krone is Europe’s biggest
circus. When it hits the road, it takes
with it 380 members of staff, 300
circus caravans and 200 animals.
During each year’s summer
tour from April to November, which takes the circus all the
happens every three to five days. Safely and reliably
transporting all these people, animals and pieces of
equipment from one venue to the next requires careful
planning and efficient operations.
The pulling power of MAN
Recently, the task of mastering this logistical feat has fallen
to seven MAN TGX 18.440 trucks. They are snow-white, just
like the stage outfits of animal trainer Martin Lacey Jr., who
is responsible for the vehicles alongside fleet manager Robert
Spectacular performances from man and beast: The elephants have been one of the highlights at Circus Krone shows
for decades now, and the incredible trapeze artists keep audiences gasping in awe as they fly through the air.
The stars behind the scenes: Recently seven snow-white MAN TGXs joined
the circus to ensure efficient transport of animals and equipment.
Fosset. With their choice of TGX trucks, equipped with
spacious cabs, TipMatic automated transmission and 440 hp
EEV-standard engines, the two men have taken the circus
forward into a new era. They have abandoned circus trucks
with solid rubber tyres and overrun brakes in favour of a
much quicker and more efficient way of managing the trek
from one venue to the next – a route that can often be
hundreds of kilometres long. Every day that the convoy sits
still and no performance takes place costs money – the
artistes still want their wages, rent still has to be paid, and the
circus animals still need feeding. The operating efficiency of
the vehicles is therefore crucial – and much more important
than it was back in the days when
Circus Krone had a chartered railway
train to take it from town to town.
Twice to the moon and back
A circus truck travels an average
60,000 km each year. That might not be
much per truck, but with a convoy of 28
trucks it adds up to almost 1,700,000 km
– the equivalent of travelling to the
moon and back twice a year. When vast
distances like these are involved, the
new MAN TGX semi-trailers really show
off their cost efficiency.
Lion tamer Martin Lacey (45) isn’t just
passionate about big cats; he’s also
been a keen fan of big horsepower
Martin Lacey Jr. at the wheel of his TGX (above) and in the
ring in his lion tamer’s getup (top right).
since he was a small boy. We meet him behind the wheel of
a TGX, wearing a baseball cap and a dark jacket with a
turned-up collar – a far cry from his glitzy stage outfits. What
does he like about the technology in his new TGX? “They are
easy to operate and perform great on the road,” he says. The
trucks had to be specially configured for the somewhat
unusual task of transporting an entire circus. Almost all the
traditional wooden-floored two and three-axle trailers can
now reach speeds that permit them to travel on the
autobahn. Whether they are pulling performers’ caravans,
horseboxes with purebred Arabian steeds, or the seven-tonne
bull elephant General Joe in his specially reinforced trailer,
the MAN TGX trucks are powerful and versatile enough to
keep the stars of the big top truckin’ along Europe’s roads.
Consistently Efficient in everyday operations
Fleet manager Robert Fosset (63) is also excited about the
new trucks. “The new MAN TGX tractors combined with a
semi-trailer are the right step forward for the circus.” Semitrailers
are easier to transfer and can also be pulled
Interview with Martin Lacey Jr.:
“The cost-performance
ratio is perfect!”
Circus Krone’s Martin Lacey Jr., lion tamer and passionate
trucker, speaks about his cost-effective, reliable, eco-friendly
MAN TGX.
Why do you use the roads rather than the railways?
For a long time we chartered a special train, but that no
longer works for us in terms of costs and timing. We were
quick to recognise the problem and switched to the roads.
What makes the trucks better than a train?
Road transport is quicker, more flexible and cheaper. And
our new MAN semi-trailer trucks play a big part in that! Their
low fuel consumption reduces our transportation costs –
something you notice quickly when you have 300 circus
caravans to transport.
How did you decide on MAN?
First of all, the MAN TGX has a perfect cost-performance ratio.
Secondly, our drivers find the automated transmission very
easy to use. On top of that is the Comfort Super maintenance
package, which guarantees complete reliability – because we
can’t afford any breakdowns. That was a decisive factor for us
as it’s important everything moves exactly according to
schedule. We were also offered excellent sales advice by MAN.
What role did specific features of the trucks play?
Many towns no longer let all trucks into the centre. But
thanks to the TGXs’ environmentally friendly engines we can
drive directly to all our venues.
Thanks for speaking to us!
11
Cover Story Circus Krone
by conventional trucks, depending on transport capacity and
distance. “This optimised concept is the only way we can
keep the entire circus moving in the future,” says Fosset. “The
MAN trucks are efficient thanks to their much lower diesel
consumption, but it’s their fast transfer time that really makes
them cost-effective for us.” The TGX trucks get the circus to
where it needs to be quickly and reliably.
Reducing risks
The trucks run a kind of shuttle service between venues.
The transportation of the whole circus from one venue to
another must not take any longer than three days if the
circus is to avoid making a loss. That means Circus Krone
needs 100-percent reliability in order to survive. Delays or
cancellations are out of the question. To minimise the
risk of something going wrong, Lacey and Fosset
chose MAN’s Comfort Super maintenance package.
This guarantees that wear-and-tear items will also be
exchanged when necessary.
While the circus is on the move, tensions remain
high. When the last van finally comes to a halt at the
new venue, Lacey and his colleagues breathe a sigh
of relief. Now Lacey can slip out of his driving gear
and into his fancy lion tamer’s togs. And then it’s
show time! Thousands of exuberant spectators watch
as the magical mix of fun and thrills unfolds. The
seven white MAN TGX trucks remain backstage – the
secret stars behind the scenes. ■
Industry Operating challenges
Des Evans is concerned ... the transport
industry he has served for many years is facing the biggest
challenges of its life. At a recent industry function he asked
one major operator what the three
most pressing issues facing the industry
were: the answers were unequivocal.
Importantly, they echoed what Evans
had already heard from countless,
similarly reliable sources – ‘Cost’... and
in particular fuel; ‘Credit’... or rather the lack of it; and
‘Compliance’... and the ever rising burden of ensuring it.
So at a major industry press gathering just a few weeks
Cost ...
Credit ...
Compliance
If there are three bigger issues facing the
operating industry, nobody has told MAN’s
UK CEO, Des Evans, about them.
“Can the operating
industry survive in
its current form?”
ago, he posed this question of the 40 journalists present –
“Can the operating industry survive in its current form?”
A glance at the 2011 Motor Transport Top 100 list of UK
operators shows an average of just 3%
Return on Sales (ROS): even in these
straightened economic times, significantly
lower than other major core UK
industries. Against that ROS figure,
Evans points to estimates from highlyregarded
sources of a 5% rise in ‘general operating costs’
such as tyres, insurances, R&M, utilities and so on and an
accompanying forecast of 13% fuel cost increases -
“And, in the face of
growing legislation, MAN is
certainly cutting the costs
of compliance – that’s a
fact.” Des Evans, CEO,
MAN Truck & Bus UK Ltd.
15
Industry Operating challenges
perhaps a cautious estimate in these difficult times. Based
on these figures, operators face the prospect of either
having to increase turnover to achieve enough 3% margin
simply to stand still, or find more economical and efficient
ways to operate. In such tough economic times, both
represent significant challenges. However, Des Evans argues
that some progress is possible.
Cost...
With fuel, at c. 40%, the major factor in any operating cost
table (the truck itself is less than 10%) Evans says this is
where to begin the quest for cuts. He is dismissive of the
chances of any Government assistance, and argues that
selecting a fuel efficient truck to begin with is vital. He
points to the MAN TGX achieving
9.27mpg in its recent two-day
Commercial Motor road test as a
prime example. However, he then
says, drivers are actually ‘the
biggest influence on whether a
truck, any truck, will achieve its operating potential’.
“Training and performance monitoring are key,” says
Evans. This belief has become his passion, with his UK
operation pioneering MAN EcoStyle, the driver and vehicle
performance monitoring hardware and software rapidly
making its presence felt in many major fleets. At the time of
writing, Maritime and Saints Transport have just taken
EcoStyle on all their trucks, and both are looking at similar
MAN systems for their trailer fleets – almost 2000 assets in
total for these two operators alone. This, in addition to some
7000 vehicles already equipped.
Of course, you need to set standards before you begin to
monitor performance, or you risk simply watching a poorly
performing fleet continue to cost you money. It is why
operators increasing time
and money.
“We have rapidly
become a bank that
also makes trucks...”
Evans has made MAN ProfiDrive
training days part of every MAN
truck deal that includes R&M.
Drivers get an excellent grounding
in efficient driving and the day
also counts toward their driver
CPC. ‘Before and After’ figures
from ProfiDrive show fuel
improvements per driver of 15%-
20%. And it isn’t only fuel that
improves; repair, maintenance
and servicing bills also drop
dramatically under the combined
ProfiDrive/EcoStyle influence.
....Credit...
The banks are everybody’s whipping boy these days, a
position well-earned by their often unhelpful approach to
the problems they largely created for us all. Des Evans
wonders just how much they’ve really changed though,
asking another big question: “What is the true state of bank
lending?”
Sir Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England,
accused banks of ‘harsh treatment’ and of failure to help
British business with the funds needed to survive and grow.
In February he noted bank lending fell in almost every
quarter of the past three years, despite Government
instructions to the contrary. More recently he said they need
to face up to their failings. Accusing banks of hypocrisy, he
claimed they preached to others about
the need to live with market disciplines
without doing so themselves. He cited
the financial crisis, which immediately
prompted bank bosses to ask for
bailouts. He said: “Market discipline
can’t apply to everyone except banks,” noting that given
their behaviour in the run-up to recession, anger against
banks was “very real and wholly understandable”.
As an antidote to the traditional banks and their failures,
Des Evans points to rising manufacturer funding, with MAN
Financial Services backing some 60% of all the company’s
new sales and 40% of used sales last year. “We have rapidly
become a bank that also makes trucks,” he said, and, while
an amusing view of modern life, it is increasingly close to
the truth. MAN offers highly competitive options across the
acquisition spectrum, with its 36/7 lease packages delivering
6x2 26.440 TGX tractors for as little as £236/wk on a typical
five year lease - with Three Year Warranty included and 24
hour a day back-up, 7 days a week. It isn’t just finance that
Evans sees as MAN’s way of easing the financial burdens on
operators. MAN Rental now offers 1000 trucks on 6, 12, 18
and 24 month rental periods, for those not wanting to buy
outright at the moment. It’s an operation aimed primarily at
producing stocks of good quality Euro
5 used trucks, rather than a
competitive foray into the rental
sector. As Evans points out, “We are
keeping right away from short-term
rentals. These are the traditional
preserve of the mainstream rental companies, most of which
are among our key customers anyway!”
Finally, once those used trucks become available, they go
to MAN TopUsed. This is yet another MAN route to easing
the burdens of capital outlay, and has been drawing
increasing following as it sets new standards in used truck
quality, while also adding MAN finance and R&M packages
normally available only on new vehicles.
...and Compliance
With legislation bearing down on the industry ever more
heavily, managing compliance costs operators increasing
time and money, prompting Evans to ask another of his ‘big’
questions: “Can the operating industry afford the costs of
compliance.”
The simple truth, as he was quick to point out, is that
operators cannot afford not to meet those costs. The
alternative is unthinkable, involving not only massive fines
but possible imprisonment of directors.
MAN has invested millions into the UK development of
MAN EcoStyle, which, alongside driver and vehicle
monitoring, is part of a wider fleet management system that
helps operators avoid accidental compliance infringements
with a security-enabled, web-based facility that manages all
vehicle paperwork and routine inspection timetabling.
VOSA approved, it cuts time and management activity in
the operator’s office, improving accuracy and availability of
all necessary paperwork. Alongside MAN’s UK network of
e-workshops it helps protect O Licences and deliver timely
R&M. All of this is underpinned with MAN’s standard
three-year UK Warranty and a range of service contracts
delivered through what is arguably the best service
network in the UK today.
Conclusion...
So, in answer to his own question as to whether the
UK transport industry can survive its three big challenges
of Cost, Credit and Compliance, Des Evans is very
hopeful it can. “I don’t want to appear to trivialise the
“...compliance costs
operators increasing
time and money...”
problems by singling out just these three issues,’ he said,
‘but, in truth, the industry itself has singled them out.
“Cost, especially fuel, is unlikely ever to get any better,
so we need the right trucks on the road, driven well and
carefully monitored – and we can
manage all of those. As to Credit, I
don’t know what the banks will do,
but I do know MAN operators have
very attractive alternatives in their
ways of acquiring and running trucks.
And, in the face of growing legislation, MAN is certainly
cutting the costs of Compliance – that’s a fact. These are the
major issues facing the operating industry, and it is only
right that innovative and dynamic manufacturers such as
MAN give everything they can in the battle to help
operators rise to the challenges.” ■
Oman on the up
Heat and humidity, rugged terrain, bumpy roads – Oman is
a tough place for both people and machines. Economically,
however, the country is far from rocky, with rich oil reserves
powering greater demand for trucks and service.
Photos and article by: Richard Kienberger
The Salmah Plateau is a rugged
mountain landscape, a rocky desert that is accessible only
via wild, untamed slopes. The roads are rough-hewn into the
loose rock and in places they are so steep and narrow that
even all-terrain pickups have trouble handling the tight
corners. But people do live in this arid environment, mainly
goat and sheep farmers struggling to eke out a living. Close
to the handful of houses that make up the small mountain
village of Qurran, a brand-new MAN TGM 18.240 painted in
eye-catching red and white heralds progress for the lives of
the inhabitants. The truck driver and his two colleagues are
transporting wooden poles to the remote region. The poles
will be used to hold a power line that is being set up in the
area and that has already reached a spot just a few kilometres
down the hill. In a few weeks’ time the line will connect
the village up to the electricity grid. This exciting new
development in Qurran is evidence of the economic progress
in Oman, a small country on the Arabian Peninsula with
abundant oil and gas reserves like its larger neighbours Saudi
Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Once a poor country,
Oman has been making significant economic progress,
especially during the last ten years. In addition to building an
electricity grid, the country has been investing heavily in
roads and infrastructure projects such as the expansion of
sea ports and airports. Oman’s ruler, Sultan Qaboos, wants to
get his country in shape for what comes after the oil boom.
And his investment programme has also increased demand
for trucks and logistical services.
Sultan Qaboos has been gradually modernising the country since taking
power in 1971. A large portion of income from oil and gas sales goes
towards infrastructure projects like road and port construction, with the goal
of developing Oman into a modern business location. Oman is part of MAN’s
Middle East sales region, where MAN’s dependable products and quality
service have helped it capture a disproportionately high market share.
class of heavy goods vehicles with a gross combined weight
of over 18 tonnes. Three years ago MAN opened an office
with a staff of highly skilled professionals in Muscat, Oman’s
capital. The customer centre is home to a showroom, sales
offices, delivery area and service desks. Behind its modern
façade is a gigantic work area with 27 maintenance bays and
shaded areas where diagnostics, minor repairs and servicing
can be performed on an additional 75 trucks. “It can reach
50°C out here in the summer and 95 percent humidity,” says
Van Graan. So the provision of shade is crucial in maintaining
MAN’s world-class service standards in this harsh
environment.
Demand for heavy-duty trucks
The heat not only makes the conditions in the workshop
more difficult, it also drives demand. “From this location,
MAN supplies vehicles that are designed specifically for this
area and can withstand the extreme weather,” says Van
Graan. The local driving conditions are harsh, and the trucks
have to keep moving forward on unpaved roads or in
the desert. Oman has
“In 30 years we
have built up
a 40-percent
market share.”
David van Graan, MAN Oman
approximately 32,800
kilometres of roads,
and more than 25,000
kilometres of them are
still unpaved. That
places extremely heavy
demands on the drivers
and their machines.
Demand is especially
high for vehicles that cope well on rugged terrain. “Our
customers rely on the dependable, robust TGM and TGS
WW series with their all-wheel-drive systems – especially in
the desert, in the mountains and in the oil fields,” says Van
Graan. “They value MAN vehicles as premium products with
a high degree of reliability.” Bahwahn Group manager
Milind Patwardhan, who oversees its MAN business,
concurs: “The 6x4 models are particularly popular in Oman
due to the poor roads and because of their high load-bearing
capacity.” The current TGS WW has become a favourite
among Omani contractors, says Patwardhan, with both the
6x4s and the all-wheel-drive models selling very well in their
respective segments.
The requirements for large-scale infrastructure projects are,
of course, on an entirely different level. In airport expansion
projects, for instance, contractors are using massive multi-axle
MAN heavy-haul trucks for really tough jobs like moving
precast concrete construction elements. These giants are the
only ones that can keep the site supplied with what it needs.
MAN is thus doing its bit to help shape a modern Oman that
is using its oil revenues to build a better future. ■
MAN heavy-haul trucks are indispensable assistants for large infrastructure projects (above). 27 maintenance bays,
you peek inside the cab.
Jochen Hahn, the incumbent European
Truck Racing champion, was able to depend on his brawny
TGS throughout the entire season last year. Whenever things
got dicey, Hahn could use every last bit of power in the
vehicle and push his way to the front. The engineers in
Nuremburg focused on engine electronics when they worked
on the five-tonne TGS 18.480 with its 1,100 hp engine and
top speed of 160 km/h. “We were able to optimise the
Countdown to racing season
A peek inside the cab of the TGS reveals that the pedals
MAN TGX sets new 9.27mpg record
in Euro-5 press testing – as well as
9.1mpg in the leading Euro-4 used
truck test too!
All the leading trade magazines, including the RHA’s
influential ROADWAY magazine, saw MAN’s TGX 26.440
achieve record breaking economy figures.
The MAN TGX confirmed the high
economy standards set at Euro-4 when winning Commercial
Motor’s 1000 Mile Test, with a staggering 9.27mpg result for
the Euro-5 model in the hands of the same magazine late
last year. Following the resounding 9.1mpg achieved by the
MAN TopUsed Euro-4 model, also tested last year by
Commercial Motor, the TGX has surely set the standard
other trucks must now be measured against.
It wasn’t only the highly regarded weekly magazine that
found TGX so frugal either. Industry magazines across the
country, from Transport News in Scotland, Export & Freight
in Northern Ireland, Fleet Transport south of the border and
the RHA magazine, ROADWAY, all found the TGX set new
levels of fuel economy.
Nor was it simply economy that impressed these hard-toplease
journalists. Writing for Commercial Motor, Kevin
Swallow announced, “To complete what can only be
described as a comprehensive victory, the TGX comes out
on top in both average speed and payload too.”
Each magazine was also quick to point out that the
savings didn’t just finish with the fuel. As a member of the
EGR-engined MAN range currently available at Euro-5, the
TGX 26.440 doesn’t need any of the complexity and costs of
AdBlue either, further lowering the total cost of ownership
it delivers for its operators.
These were highly convincing outings for the new and
TopUsed tractors, and it’s hardly surprising the MAN came
a very close second in all 6x2 tractor sales in the UK in 2012,
narrowly missing top spot by just 0.1%! With results like
these at the hands of a highly independent industry press,
things look set for an even better performance in 2012 as,
understandably, more and more operators come over to
MAN – looking not just for the promise of lowered ‘Total
Cost of Ownership’ but proven delivery! ■
Cold testing saves a million litres of diesel and 3,000 tonnes of CO2
Minimal human intervention: cold testing not only saves
valuable resources, it’s also almost entirely automated.
28
From the outside it looks just like
any other factory, with shutters and cryptic numbering. But
the MAN engine plant in Nuremberg is no ordinary factory.
Behind the red-brick walls is a high-tech institution that uses
all the latest manufacturing techniques, including cold
testing. Upon entering the hall, you immediately notice the
almost clinical cleanliness of the place. Not a speck of dirt
or a smudge of grease can be found, as cold testing requires
absolute precision. But this level of fastidiousness is worth
it: the process thoroughly tests all the functions of every
engine but requires only a fraction of the diesel and the time
needed for more conventional hot testing. Cold tests
therefore save valuable resources and protect the
environment and climate. This achievement has now been
officially recognised: in late 2011 MAN was awarded a major
environmental prize from the state of Bavaria for its cold
testing procedure.

not a feeble click. But in conventional simulations engineers
start the engine and let it run until it reaches operating
temperature before meticulously examining it. Engines thus
consume diesel and produce carbon dioxide during testing.
Preparing the engine for the test also takes a lot of
preparation (see info box to the right). So another advantage
of cold testing is its improved efficiency.
MAN first tried out the process in 2006 and has used it
increasingly ever since, thanks to its massive potential for
saving fuel and time. At the factory, around 15 workers, headed
by module manager Frank Wieczorek and segment manager
Franz Kocher, are responsible for preparing and running the
tests and making the final checks. Kocher explains: “In a cold
test, the engine does not run on its own power, but is driven
by an electric motor.” A control unit assesses the data
electronically. It comes as no surprise that shorter testing times
dramatically reduce the amount of diesel required and produce
Quick overview:
How cold testing
works
It takes around half an hour of thorough testing before
each engine can prove that it meets the strict quality
criteria and will run reliably. The special thing about the
process is that the engine no longer needs to start up –
instead it’s driven by an electric motor.
1
A conveyer system transports the engines to the cold
testing area at precise intervals. There, the engine
number is scanned and saved so that the correct
parameters can be transmitted to the test stand.
2A worker prepares the engine and connects it to the
diesel line and control unit. The engine is then filled with
a small amount of diesel and the test can begin.
only a fraction of the emissions. Cold testing can check all the
engine’s general functions, too. Kocher and his staff know
exactly what they’re doing – every move they make is part of
a well-practiced routine. Once a minute an engine trundles into
the cold testing area. It is placed onto a special pallet by a crane
and then human hands are required for the only time in this
highly automated process as a worker connects the engine to
the fuel line and the control unit.
3Temperatures remain at a constant 20°C. During the
test, the engine is lifted off the pallet so that correct
measurements can be made.
The entire test in just three minutes
The last step before the cold test is a leak test on the oil
and water tanks. By pumping these full of air, engineers can
identify weak spots where leaks could occur. Then it’s off to
the testing stand, which is off-limits to humans. The stand
resembles a cleanroom used in chip manufacturing, as
the test can only be successfully carried out when all
environmental conditions are constant. The test is
completely automated. For three minutes, the control unit
measures and assesses various pressures and data while a
laser vibrometer conducts a vibration analysis. As Kocher
says, “In this way, we can precisely determine the quality of
components such as the oil pump and the turbocharger.”
The test is currently being used for D20/D26 engines, built
into the TGS and TGX series, and for D08 engines, used in
the TGL and TGM series.
Committed to environmental protection
The benefits of cold testing are significant. In hot testing,
an engine consumes around 25 litres of diesel per test cycle,
while in cold testing it only uses around two litres. The
process is also much quicker than hot testing, meaning that
the engines can be tested in sync with the assembly line,
which reduces production costs. It’s therefore much more
economical for the company. And the environment also
benefits from cold testing. Since MAN now only runs hot tests
on around ten percent of its engines, it saves an overall
amount of energy each year equal to around 3,000 tonnes of
carbon dioxide. In 2011 this impressive figure brought MAN
an award from the Bavarian Environment Ministry.
“Since 1995 MAN Truck &
Bus has been committed to
developing environmentally
friendly vehicles and engines
as well as energy-efficient
manufacturing and
production processes.”
Dr Heike Sarstedt, Head of Environmental Management
4Vibrometers analyse vibrations and noise and use a
laser (the red light in the picture) to check for faults in
the valve settings. These sensitive devices make the
test results more reliable than ever before.
Dr Heike Sarstedt, Head of Environmental and Safety
Management at MAN Truck & Bus comments on MAN’s
environmental history: “As early as 1995, MAN demonstrated
corporate responsibility by signing a regional environmental
agreement.” Since then, MAN has developed more
environmentally friendly vehicles and engines, made its
production more energy efficient and reduced its
consumption of resources at all its plants. At its headquarters
in Munich, for example, MAN improved the ventilation and
heating systems in the production facilities, saving an average
of around 4,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. MAN Truck
& Bus’s commitment to the environment soon became an
official part of the corporate responsibility strategy of the
entire MAN Group. Its goal is to create sustainable added
value throughout all business strategies and processes in the
belief that businesses, the environment and human beings
can work together in harmony, preserving nature and
resources for future generations. The cold tests at the engine
plant in Nuremberg are an excellent example of this
philosophy in practice. ■
Customer Support Older trucks
While a new truck operator
enjoys all the support that, quite rightly, goes with those
vehicles, operators of older vehicles in their second and
third life use, have much the same needs – if not more! MAN
has set out to make sure they also get the same levels of
support.
Menu Pricing
One way MAN Truck & Bus UK is offering that support is
through faster, more competitive and more accurate service
price quoting. Vince Welsh, Aftersales Director at MAN in
the UK, said, “For busy operators of our older vehicles,
getting service and maintenance prices has been too timeconsuming.
Some operators were waiting 15 minutes or
longer, while our customer support teams interrogated parts
MAN Truck & Bus UK
is offering greater
support to operators
of older MAN trucks
through MAN Menu
Pricing and MAN
Comfort Managed –
two cost-and-time
saving service deals.
Growing old gracefully
With the credit squeeze pushing operators to keep vehicles
for longer, and more and more high quality MAN TopUsed
vehicles joining fleets to reduce capital costs, so the number
of older trucks grows.
menus, service hours’ guides and other related data for each
individual job. That just wasn’t good enough, so we’ve done
something about it.”
That ‘something’ is the innovative MAN Menu Pricing
service, available by phone or at the service counter from
any of MAN’s 68 UK service centres. “It is” says Welsh, “a
significant step forward. Now, when these operators ask for
a service quote, they should get a firm, fair and accurate
price in around 15 seconds.” MAN Menu Pricing has
analysed parts, labour and other aspects of 800 common
service requests to produce fixed and competitive ‘local’
prices. Operators simply quote the vehicle registration
number and any MAN service dealer can pull up the
relevant vehicle details, enabling quotes to be fully specific
to the actual truck.
Comfort Managed
MAN’s second approach to older vehicle care is MAN
Comfort Managed; a budgeted programme of R&M
agreements that will consider any vehicle or trailer,
regardless of make or age, putting them onto either a ‘Pay
as you go’ billing system or a ‘Monthly Budget’ plan.
With ‘Pay as you go’, operators get a consolidated
invoice at the end of each month, with a detailed report on
the costs incurred. With a ‘Monthly Budget’ plan, they pay
a fixed monthly rate, with a financial reconciliation
completed every six months. This is followed by a review
meeting at which fee adjustments can be agreed or the
existing fee left in place for the full year before any underspend
is reimbursed, or overspend invoiced, by MAN.
Benefits to operators of trucks and trailers over five years
old and out of original R&M
plans are significant. Apart
from access to nationwide
response, support, quality and
compliance of a leading
MAN’s second approach
to older vehicle care is
MAN Comfort Managed; a
budgeted programme of
R&M agreements that will
consider any vehicle or
trailer, and putting them
onto a ‘Pay as you go’
billing system or a ‘Monthly
Budget’ plan.
manufacturer’s national network, they enjoy: centralised
control and adjudication of costs; standard repair times;
documented vehicle history checks to eliminate payment
for repeat failures, parts warranties, warranty costs and so
on; fixed, discounted R&M parts pricing; fixed, lower-thanstandard
labour rates; access to MAN‘s e-workshop system
for work scheduling and documentation storage; and single
simple invoicing. MAN will even supply monthly analysis
of service and repair ‘events’, finance reports, individual
spend by vehicle or trailer, individual costs per component
category, top ten highest spend vehicles by depot and so on.
So, from championing the cause of older truck quality
through its TopUsed programme, MAN has now turned the
spotlight on the ongoing care of those older trucks and
trailers. And their future suddenly looks a lot brighter. ■
