Reducing the waste<br />

Exercise 1 - Audit of household waste<br />

The night be<strong>for</strong>e the garbage is collected, weigh all the garbage, including what is in the<br />

recycle <strong>and</strong> green waste bins.<br />

1. Cover the floor with newspapers <strong>and</strong> sort the garbage into the following categories:<br />

– compostable<br />

– recyclable<br />

– reusable<br />

– l<strong>and</strong>fill.<br />

2. Weigh each category <strong>and</strong> calculate it as a percentage of the total amount of garbage.<br />

3. Record this in<strong>for</strong>mation in percentages using the chart below.<br />

4. Calculate the percentage of waste that was in the wrong category.<br />

Discuss <strong>and</strong> note the practices of those households with low l<strong>and</strong>fill percentages.<br />

Write a list of recommendations <strong>for</strong> your own family to ensure best practice waste disposal<br />

methods are used.<br />

Exercise 2 - Reducing l<strong>and</strong>fill costs<br />

Read the letter from the Mayor of Casey <strong>and</strong> summarise in your own words the reasons given<br />

<strong>for</strong> the introduction of the Green Waste Service.<br />
