The real cost of food
5. Let’s go shopping!
Ask your parents to save their weekly shopping list from the supermarket. Next week, with
your parents, try to buy as many grocery items as you can on the list from an independent
local grocer or a range of local shops. Then answer the following questions.
– Was it more or less expensive?
– Could you buy everything on the list?
In an Excel spreadsheet, set up a table as follows:
Shopping item Supermarket cost Local grocer cost Difference
List supermarket items and prices in the first two columns, then add the local grocer
costs in the third column and calculate the difference. Comment on differences in cost,
convenience, choice and any other relevant factors.
