SECTION F
Wealth, consumption and happiness
kind of society we want. The nature and maintenance of social sustainability
is examined in F2 using problem gambling as a context. Around 15% of regular
gamblers are problem gamblers, with gamblers under 25 twice as likely to develop
problems. (Source: Problem Gambling – A guide for Victorian Schools, 2006,
Department of Justice). On the one hand weak communities can increase problem
gambling, but on the other hand problem gambling can weaken communities.
The approach in F1 – Exercise 4 draws from the work of Alain De Botton in The
Consolations of Philosophy, Penguin, 2000, Chapter 2.
