Read the following advice on how to be a ‘green’ shopper <strong>and</strong> then prepare a visually appealing<br />

poster, leaflet or web page <strong>for</strong> students summarising what you consider to be the key points.<br />

Which is the best option <strong>for</strong> the environment?<br />

Compare price, quality <strong>and</strong> environmental per<strong>for</strong>mance of different br<strong>and</strong>s. Sometimes,<br />

environmentally friendly products may cost more, but energy savings will leave the consumer<br />

better off.<br />

Is it made from recyclable materials?<br />

Choose products made from paper, cardboard, aluminium, steel <strong>and</strong> recycled plastics to create<br />

dem<strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> recyclable materials. Know the difference between recycled <strong>and</strong> recyclable.<br />

Look <strong>for</strong> the following in<strong>for</strong>mation:<br />

– percentage recycled (paper <strong>and</strong> cardboard)<br />

– unbleached (paper <strong>and</strong> cardboard)<br />

– made from recycled plastic<br />

– made from sustainable managed timber<br />

– recycled content (metals <strong>and</strong> plastics).<br />

Do I need this packaging?<br />

Choose refillable or reusable packs. Avoid over-packaged or throw away goods such as plastic<br />

cutlery with a takeaway meal <strong>and</strong> say “No” to unnecessary plastic bags. Australians use<br />

approximately 6 million plastic bags each year – enough to stretch around the world 37 times!<br />
