Join together the merchant and the Eastern caravan. Beware of a beguiling princess from the West, of strange machinery and Pelasgian tricks. Build gates for Ilion — and never tear them down. “I see more — even beyond the forgetting of Troy, even beyond the blood-river death of trickery and slaughter. I see the she-wolf astride the central sea, her sons the lords of all the known and unknown world. But as the Egyptians say, this too shall pass.” “Enough!” cries Tros. “Enough to know of sons and a city. Who can conceive of an empire of cities? No man should know what will be won or lost. If they be better men than us who slay us, I too shall bow before the Fates. I shall not seek out prophecy again. If it seeks me, I shall slay the speaker.” Apollo laughs. “Tell no one, then, brave Tros, but take these gifts, and with the wolf-sign seize a city for your sons-to-be. Great Zeus thus honors you and raises him, your best-beloved Ganymede, from mortal life to an immortal glory.”
With this, the Sybil collapses unconscious. Tros creeps away in silence, leaving a pouch, his offering of coins and shiny stones. Outside her temple he drinks from the spring, spits on the ground three times to clear the mushroom poison, At last his head clears, his eyes resume their single-sightedness.
