Dungeons and Dragons promotes the supernatural; these horror films just have to go! I do not like the dry lips of these accusers. Their Bibles’ leather wrappings snap like whips. The joy they take in hunting for sin is a thinly veiled erection, their glory in burning a wet dream of pyromania. I do not like their penchant for conspiracies: the ethical humanists; the homosexuals; the horned legions of child abductors; the bearded Elders of Zion with protocols; the darker races yearning to miscegenate; every rock guitar an offensive weapon. They’ll stand at the rail in Paradise (the tickets sold, the places assured), to watch the rest of us burn in Hell. They’re looking forward to the spectacle. In fact, they can think about little else. They even believe in a literal Devil. They ought to know. They’re planning to run a minor demon for President. RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS.
BLUMENSTÜCKE The parlor frowned with politeness. An elegant clock, its walnut rubbed in the proper grain, ticked quietly, its pendulum restrained from flight inside a spotless catafalque of glass. Nothing was out of place: no dust could mar the banister, lest whitegloved hands might intimate the decline of domestic servitude. The books, unread and neatly shelved, stood neck to neck in regiment, a leather-bound school of aged and unused nuns. A golden-threaded tapestry depicted unicorns at play in some Arcadian grove of knotted yews and crags. The service for six, on trays that refused to oxidize, held tea, and a modest supply of perpendicular sweeteners — the cups just small enough to weight the curve of a fragile hand with no excess of gravity: weak tea, of a kind to excite no headiness, brimmed orange at the spout of an heirloom pot.
