SIDEWAYS, IN PASSING Why does seeing you, a passing shadow peripheral, your familiar visage (distracted or likewise avoiding a direct encounter) — why does the mere sight of you leave me in turmoil, infest my elsewise unpeopled dreams, bring the bile of your name to my lips? Perhaps for the same reason that not seeing you makes every rounded corner a stroll into an ambush of your absences, makes every evening outing a boomerang that circles your lighted windows before it lets me home again.
You have become an allergy, an antibody to my peace, a needle that jabs me with the impossibility of forgetting, the violence of denial the harshness of judgment. Perhaps we need these shocks, these repulsions, these double-barreled explosions — they help us recharge our pact of mutual avoidance.
