SIDEWAYS, IN PASSING
Why does seeing you,
a passing shadow
peripheral,
your familiar visage
(distracted or likewise
avoiding a direct encounter) —
why does the mere sight of you
leave me in turmoil,
infest my elsewise
unpeopled dreams,
bring the bile of your name
to my lips?
Perhaps for the same reason
that not seeing you
makes every rounded corner
a stroll into an ambush
of your absences,
makes every evening outing
a boomerang
that circles your lighted windows
before it lets me home again.
