The loved ones lay helter-skelter,
unclaimed, their tokens aligned
like seraphim on shards of a shattered
frieze. Face down, the good luck cards
are never upturned and revealed.
Each player is madly in love;
each player is madly pursued.
No one ever lands on a square
where the object of his passion
awaits him. (With brazen leaps
the chessmen elude you; with haste
you flee the hateful embrace
of your relentless lover.)
Thus the dice roll,
the cards deceive,
the wheel of fortune
spins, the god
of chaos laughs.
Any number may play.
The rules change constantly.
No one uses his real name.
Everyone goes home alone.
