SPARE CHANGE Ivy league derelict begs quarters from students at the edge of the campus — annoys professors, shakes down the bankrolled college boys, the former President’s daughter — hurtles across street to meet new quarry leaving his twine-tied bundles on the sidewalk. His chosen place is the gusty side of the seven-story tower (library whose bulk wind tunnels the air into a frenzy) where he must button his collar — an unseasonable place —
dust devil’s playground when all around is calm, an arctic stretch oblivious to time of year. Is it by accident he lingers here or does he sense its chaos, its vagrant spirit, its rushing to meet you with a beggarly arrogance? Does he laugh at your torn umbrella your wayward skirt the pages of your thesis blown into traffic? Does he fancy these gusts his personal servants, hounding and pelting you when you refuse to dip a hand into the swollen pocket to pay his dues? <strong>The</strong> lean troll smiles, counts his quarters towards a sit-down dinner, reties the knots on his amorphous bundles. Is he the guardian of gales? Who knows what hurricanes, what compressed whirlwinds he might unleash if once those knots untangled? RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS.
