Compassion and Sympathy: Schopenhauer and his Critics. Towards Retrieving Schopenhauers Perspective on Mitleid
(Compassion) as the Metaphysical Foundation of Ethics.
K.U.Leuven
Abstract: Schopenhauer#s perspective on Mitleid (compassion) articulates a voluntaristic virtue ethics that is founded on metaphysical monism. The
moral significance of Mitleid is viewed as the seeking of the well-being of others, which stems from a response to the apprehension of their
sufferingengendered by human egoistic agency. The metaphysical relevance of Schopenhauer#s perspective on Mitleid lies in the fact that it
essentially underscores the notion of the oneness of Being and especially, the notionof common humanity against the evil consequences of
individualism whichsome consider to be the bane of modernity. Despite the general relevance of the phenomenon of compassion to ethics,
inadequate conceptions of compassion by Schopenhauer#s critics tend to diminish its ethical import.Hence, a question that deserves much
attention in this research is how valid is Schopenhauer#s perspective on Mitleid as the metaphysical foundation of ethics given these criticisms. Of
particular interest are th
