K.U.Leuven Abstract: Lifelong learning has gained more and more importance in our continuously changing society. Both employees and professional organisations experience the need to be able to develop continuously. In this research project we will therefore investigate the antecedents and benefits of formaland informal learning within professional organisations. The goal of this research is to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge and theory on professional learning in a field where much is known but aneed for research based diagnostic tools and theory exists. A theoretical model on the role of formal and informal learning within organisations, derived from literature is proposed and will be tested empirically. Amixed method research will be applied. Qualitative methods will be usedto verify and refine the benefits that can result from learning within organisations and to develop an instrument to measure informal learning. Quantitative methods will be used to validate this instrument and te Organisations: • Education and Training Researchers: • Filip Dochy • Eva Kyndt Inter-Religious Peace Education for Development in Northern Ghana: Youth as Agents K.U.Leuven Abstract: In this research work, we focus on the Northern part of Ghana that is known to suffer pain, loss, poor educational standards, poor health services and hunger, due to severe interreligious and intercultural violence and conflicts that characterise the area. If development is to be fuelled,
there is first the need to work towards peace. Therefore, we need people who are able to tolerate, respect, dialogue, appreciate one another,and thereby unite and cooperate to work for the common good of all. On the basis of this, we argue that educating for peace from an inter-religious perspective aimed at preventing the reoccurrence of religious conflicts and guiding the people on the value of peace, which can also bring an end to other inter-ethnic conflicts, is necessary. Specific to our approach is the attention to the youth both as a crucial agent to initiateand strengthen conflicts and as an agent to enhance peace processes. Firstly, we confront ourselves with scientific data about climate change (GIEC) and try to define if it is caused by moral evil (anthropogenic origins) or ontic evil (natural variations in temperatures). Secondly, we shall introduce the concept of global public goods within the traditional Christian understanding of the notion of common good ('bonum commune'). Thirdly, we shall develop the idea of global justice and of a fair future by describing the moral obligations of present generations towards future generations. Fourthly, the notion of ecological debt will be examined in order to define human responsibility visà-vis climate conditions. Thisresearch is important for two reasons: the need for adequate pastoral accompaniment to enhance the quality of life of persons with intellectualdisability, and the necessity of a person centred and a contextual framework for this pastoral accompaniment. The research uses two sources of knowledge and methodologies. First, a qualitative empirical research explores the current practices of pastoral accompaniment by an analysis andcomparison of structured interviews with persons with intellectual disability and pastoral companions. Secondly, a thorough theological study of literature provides ideas, key concepts, nuances, pitfalls and criticism towards a view on pastoral accompaniment for persons with intellectual disability. Approche philosophique et théologique K.U.Leuven Abstract: No English Abstract Organisations: • Research Unit Theological Ethics Researchers: • Yves De Maeseneer Reclaiming Faith: Exploring Merold Westphal's Phenomenology of Faith inView of its Consequenses for a Contemporary Philosophy of Religion and Fundamental-Theology K.U.Leuven Abstract: The current response to onto-theo-logy has created tension between theologians and philosophers on how exactly one can conceive of God beyond being the grounding of existence, how such a God encounters existence andwhether or not these attempts at overcoming onto-theology create more problems than they solve. Merold Westphal#s phenomenology of faith postulates that faith, as a mode of understanding that is intellectually equal to scientific-calculative reasoning, can articulate the relationship between humanity and God better. The goal of the proposed research project is to investigate this phenomenology of faith, determining if it can redefine the relationship between faith and reason while overcoming onto-theo-logy. The notion of a lived, phenomenology of faith as an intellectual and ethical discourse could recalibrate the role of reason, intuition and belief within contemporary culture. Transcendental versus Hermeneutical Approaches to Religious Truth Claims K.U.Leuven Abstract: The research proposed here aims to explore whether it is possible to conceive of religious truth in a way that holds in balance both its universal and the particular dimension of truth and thereby avoids the pitfalls of either universalism or particularism. This investigation will be conducted by way of a critical comparison of the transcendental (Karl Rahner) and the hermeneutical approach (David Tracy, Francis Schüssler- Fiorenza, Lieven Boeve) to theological epistemology with a specific focus on the role of the concept of incarnation. The main question is which of these two theological approaches provide the better theological epistemology capable of balancing particularity and universality in religious truth claims.
