Abstract: Lifelong learning has gained more and more importance in our continuously changing society. Both employees and pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

organisations experience the need to be able to develop continuously. In this research project we will therefore investigate the antecedents and<br />

benefits <strong>of</strong> formaland informal learning within pr<strong>of</strong>essional organisations. The goal <strong>of</strong> this research is to contribute to the development <strong>of</strong> scientific<br />

knowledge and theory on pr<strong>of</strong>essional learning in a field where much is known but aneed for research based diagnostic tools and theory exists. A<br />

theoretical model on the role <strong>of</strong> formal and informal learning within organisations, derived from literature is proposed and will be tested empirically.<br />

Amixed method research will be applied. Qualitative methods will be usedto verify and refine the benefits that can result from learning within<br />

organisations and to develop an instrument to measure informal learning. Quantitative methods will be used to validate this instrument and te<br />
