Abstract: Infectieziekten onderscheiden zich van andere ziekten doordat ten eerste een besmet individu niet enkel een slacht<strong>of</strong>fer is, maar<br />
eveneens een verspreider van ziekte, en ten tweede doordat een besmetting bovendien vaak perfect voorkombaar is door middel van vaccinatie (<strong>of</strong><br />
door andere voorzorgsmaatregelen). Dit roept een aantal ethische en filos<strong>of</strong>ische vragenop waarop weinig afdoende antwoorden zijn geformuleerd.<br />
In dit onderzoek wil ik me richten op de volgende drie vragen. (1) Hoeveel voorzorgsmaatregelen moeten mensen vanuit ethisch standpunt nemen,<br />
om besmettingen bij elkaar te vermijden? (2) Hoe moet de overheid een utilitaristisch geïnspireerd volksgezondheidsbeleid rijmen met daarmee<br />
conflicterende individuele rechten en vrijheden van burgers? (3) De rechtvaardigheidsvraag: in een context van schaarse middelen, welke ethische<br />
waarden zijn er danvan tel bij de beslissing om medische zorg al dan niet terug te betalen?<br />

Tectonic landscapes <strong>of</strong> Minoan Crete: a geoarchaeological investigation.<br />

Abstract: This research project intends to examine the relationship between the tectonically active landscapes <strong>of</strong> Crete (Greece) and their Minoan<br />
inhabitants during the Late Bronze Age. First, the patterns <strong>of</strong> archaeologicalsite destructions recorded during the Late Minoan IIIB (LM IIIB, ca.<br />
1300-1200 BC) will be studied. Their value as paleoearthquake indicator will be examined. Scaling up the field <strong>of</strong> research, the spatial relationship<br />
between Minoan archaeological sites and tectonic geomorphology (e.g. fault scarps, gorges, cliffs) will be investigated.
